i think the file is in a type of csv format, so anyone can open it in a
spreadsheet program. Have you tried changing the extension to csv and opening
it with OpenOffice.org Calc?

Re: [LUAU] after e2fsck, system reverts to 2005

2006-07-20 Thread David Imai
Thanks for the suggestions, Julian and Vince. It's a RAID-1 system after all.
Using a live CD i was able to mount one of the hard drives and I saw that the
2006 files were still there.
Next I tried taking the hard drives and attaching them to a system running
Ubuntu. I installed one as the secondary slave, and edited the /etc/fstab file.
But when I tried to mount it, I got the message "/dev/hdd2 already mounted or
/mnt/hdd2 busy." I tried attaching the other drive and got the same message.
I tried searching on the web and saw some refernces to evms and lvm. Finally I
found a suggestion to look at /dev/evms. I ran ls -la /dev/evms/md:
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 2 root disk100 2006-07-20 15:06 .
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root140 2006-07-20 15:06 ..
brw-r- 1 root disk 9, 0 2006-07-20 15:06 md0
brw-r- 1 root disk 9, 1 2006-07-20 15:06 md1
brw-r- 1 root disk 9, 255 2006-07-20 15:06 md255
After editing /etc/fstab i was able to mount md1 and copy the files I needed to
another drive.

[LUAU] after e2fsck, system reverts to 2005

2006-07-14 Thread David Imai
I was working on a file server that I obtained from HOSEF about 2 years ago.
It runs Fedora Core 2.6.7, and has two hard drives in a RAID system (I think
RAID-0). Using a live CD I ran the command e2fsck -ckv /dev/md0. It seemed to
work, but there was a message that said something like "date of superblock is
in future." Later I noticed that some recent files were missing. Actually it
looks like the system was restored to the state it was in in December 2005. The
configuration files like /etc/samba/smb.conf and /etc/passwd are there, but
they are in their 2005 versions. They don't reflect recent changes. Log files
in /var/log look like they did in 2005. Files created in 2006 are missing. I
don't think the system date and time were changed. Does anyone have any ideas
on what happened? Can the missing files be recovered?

Even if this is the case, what is causing the slowness? Windows and Mac systems
don't seem to suffer from the problem. Is it a problem with the way the
nameservers are configured? or is it a problem with Linux or Ubuntu? I think if
people who try to use Linux with RR experience this problem, they will probably
blame Linux. HOSEF is planning to distribute desktop machines to people. It
wouldn't be good if everyone who used RR ran into this problem. so what would
be the best way to fix it before the user runs into it?

On Ubuntu and Mepis systems I was getting slow internet response using
Roadrunner. The name resolution seemed to take nearly a minute. I tried
changing the default nameservers and that made a difference. It was faster with
the lava.net, hawaiiantel.net and flex.com nameservers, and slower with rr.com
and aol.com nameservers. Why is that?

I recently signed up for DSL service and found that the setup CD only works

[LUAU] Re: Kernel panic?

2004-11-11 Thread David Imai
This could be a problem with the way the cable is hooked up. Here are things
you can try.

When you turn on the computer, before lilo starts, you should see a message
that says "Press F1 for setup" or something like that. Press the appropriate
key and wait for the setup screen to appear. Then look for information about
the hard drive. If you don't see your hard drive, there is a hardware problem.
Do this every time you change a drive or cable.

There is a jumper on the hard drive that can be set for Master, Slave or Cable
Select. there might be a diagram on the hard drive that shows you how to set
the jumper. If you have a cable select type cable, you have to put the jumper
on Cable Select. If not, if you have only one drive on the cable it should be
on Master or Single. If you have two drives on the cable, one is master and the
other is slave.

Check to see if the cable is plugged into the correct part of the motherboard
and that it's facing the correct direction. You can also try a different cable.

Re: [LUAU] Helping the Schools

2004-10-22 Thread David Imai
I can be there from about 10 to 2 and help with loading and disassembing. I see
that Computers for Kids only takes 17 inch monitors. I'd be interested in
smaller monitors for USH if some can be salvaged. I'll ask James Jones if he
can bring the car.

Re: [LUAU] Automatic mounting of floppy and CDROM

2004-10-18 Thread David Imai
Problem solved. I just changed the umask=002 in the /etc/auto.misc file to
umask=000. I think that should be OK for a desktop machine in someone's home.
Now I can read and write to floppy and read the CD from Kword without a mount
command.

[LUAU] Automatic mounting of floppy and CDROM

2004-10-18 Thread David Imai
I had given up on autofs, but since you said it should work I took another look
and was able to get it working. The problem was in /etc/default/autofs. It
contains a line that says AUTOFS_ENABLED=false. When I changed it to
AUTOFS_ENABLED=true it worked. I don't know why it was set up like this. When
you install something, shouldn't it be enabled by default? and if not, there
should be clear instructions as to how to enable it.

This is the auto.misc file:
kernel -ro
ftp.kernel.org:/pub/linux
boot-fstype=ext2:/dev/hda1
removable -fstype=ext2,sync,nodev,nosuid :/dev/hdd
cd -fstype=iso9660,ro,sync,nodev,nosuid:/dev/hdc
floppy -fstype=auto,sync,nodev,nosuid,umask=002:/dev/fd0

I'm trying to create symbolic links to /var/autofs/misc/floppy and
/var/autofs/misc/cdrom. There are different files for the floppy drive,
/floppy, /dev/floppy, /dev/fd0, /dev/fd. Where can I find more information
about all these special files, and how KDE programs like Kword access the
floppy and CD-ROM? Thanks for your help.

[LUAU] Automatic mounting of floppy and CDROM

2004-10-06 Thread David Imai
I am currently preparing a number of used computers for home users who are
mostly beginners. Most of them are Pentium II with 128MB or less RAM and 4GB
hard drives. The computers currently have Skolelinux Debian and KDE installed
on them. I've been trying to get the floppy and cdrom to automatically mount
whenever they are accessed, but so far I haven't been able to do it. I've been
tring to use autofs. According to one of the articles listed below it works
better than amd with floppy drives. Is it necessary to recompile the kernel to
get it to work? If so, is there another Linux distribution that would better
fit the users requirements?

What I've tried so far:

Added the user to the groups floppy and cdrom.
This enables the KDE CD Player program to run, but does not enable KWord to
save to floppy or open a CD file.

Found some information on autofs:
http://www.kryogenix.org/writings/tech/autofs
http://freespace.sourceforge.net/guidod/howto/autofs.html
http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue42/nielsen.html

Installed autofs: "apt-get install autofs"
I did not recompile the kernel.
Restarted computer.
Looked at /proc/filesystems but autofs was not listed there.
Looked at /etc/auto.master and /etc/auto.misc. They seem OK.
Made symbolic links to /var/autofs/misc/floppy and /var/autofs/misc/cd: ln -s
/var/autofs/misc/floppy /floppy
ln -s /var/autofs/misc/cd /cdrom
(I'm not sure if I did this correctly).
This still does not enable KWord to save to floppy or open a CD file.
The commands "mount /cd" and "mount /floppy" work OK from the console.

Edited /etc/auto.misc
Added the "user" option to the entries for cd and floppy.
Restarted.
This still does not enable KWord to save to floppy or open a CD file.

I haven't changed the /etc/fstab file, and I haven't recompiled the kernel.
