BIOS:
Go to BIOS setup (F2 on dell?), change "Halt on all errors" to all but
keyboard/mouse, it should boot.

X:
Turn off gdm, xdm or kdm service, most likely gdm for gnome, X no
longer starts until you enable it again, just console login. If you
want X without keyboard/mouse, there's an option to ignore
keyboard/mouse errors for /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /etc/X11/XF86config.

Dumb terminal:
edit /etc/inittab, enable "T?" line for terminal with getty, set
speed, serial port and terminal type, connect your dumb terminal, then
"kill -HUP 1" to reload initd with your new terminal configuration.

Re: [LUAU] help with iptables

2007-10-15 Thread Whoever Whatever
Found my problem, added rules to the NAT's PREROUTING chain were able
to block traffics to my local network, but still allow for all ports
to the internet. Took a while to read the iptables manpage and read
the INPUT, FORWARD, OUTPUT and NAT chain document.

Thanks for the comment and help.

[LUAU] help with iptables

2007-10-13 Thread Whoever Whatever
Hi,
when I have a linux box with two NICs, one $EXTIF (external) and
one $INTIF (subnet=192.168.176.0/20). With ip masq turn on:
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o $EXTIF -j MASQUERADE

how do I block $INTIF(192.168.176/20) from accessing ports(ie: 80) on
the linux box(192.168.176.1), but still allow port 80 access using ip
masq to the outside world?

I tried the filters below, but I still can access port 80 after
applying the rules:
iptables -A INPUT -i $INTIF -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 --syn -j DROP
iptables -A FORWARD -i $INTIF -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 --syn -j DROP
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -s 192.168.176.0/20 -d 192.168.176.1 --dport 80 -j DROP

anyone know if it's possible?

Thanks

Hi Robert,

My Friend doesn't need an OS on the box. We are just in need of the CPU
really that fits a socket 7. We have freeBSD on the hard drive now but
the CPU is not working.

If you want to see that the box gets to a good home I can take it and
give it to one of the BSD or Linux users I help, to learn on.
Call me at 284-2740. I can pick it up.

Thanks

[LUAU] OT: Solaris device node using World Wide Name

2005-11-09 Thread Whoever Whatever
Hi,
I wonder if anyone can answer this question, we are using sun Storedge
3510FC on about ten different systems, one of the setup(all but one) used
three of those unit linked with 2 Gb fiber loops to see maxium of 3 x (12 x
73GB) hard drives, the controllers are dual channels to the arrays. After
configuration, they all created /dev/dsk/ and /dev/rdsk/ with WWN, ie
/dev/rdsk/c7t40d0s20440FBDE0Fs2. We configured one with just a single array,
that's 12 drives wtih 73GB each, all devices show up in /dev/dsk and
/dev/rdsk without WWN, ie /dev/rdsk/c7t40d0s2, c7t40d1s2 and etc. Both setup
worked fine, they used the same hardware, same version of Solaris, even the
same release date, applied the same patched, but don't know why the system
with single arrary has normal device node and the others has the weird World
Wide Name. I search the internet, found only one post talk about conflict
Hard Drive ID on the SAN will cause that, but it will funtion as normal when
addressed with the WWN node, I tried reconfigure with "boot -r" and devfsadm
on the system with single arrary but not able to cause it to create WWN
node, anyone know what's the real cause of this?

Thanks

I did tried(urpmi, not yum) and found out I needed some other dep for
the upgrade, and don't want to break other stuff, oh.. forgot to
mention that I got a PVR500 about two weeks ago, Mandrake 9.2 freezed
when loading udev(I think that was it), so I decided to load new dist.
Picked fedora basically I am getting lazy. Well, with fedora, I only
can init one tuner on pvr500 and system crash(rebooted) after a few
minutes, complain about some address at 0x44, well I tired many
versions of ivtv, .2, .3.2, .3.4 and also tried daily release on .3.5,
gave up right before .3.6, it's still under devel I know they trying
to get it working, so I will let the PVR500 collect some dust on my
desk first. Anyway, I can say I am still happy with a pvr350 on the
master and a pvr250 on the slave.

I will nice things at different level next time to see how they
changes. I just tried to watch tv at 2200, I can see blocks, I can
tell the most when switching to a channel with some noise/snow, so
putting it back to 4500 made me happy.

Agree,
It's good to see them moving this direction, doesn't matter if they
gain or the public gain at the end. You can't expect everyone selling
just service to make their stock holder happy, I never have any bad
experence with them in the past. We used alot of open source product
in our envirment, but they are all in Solaris with sun hardwares,
v1280, e4500, 450, v440, v240, and dumpping all ultra now. Sun rep is
amazing locally, he will respond within the same day, show up with
parts in 48 hours, last time they shipped parts by dropping boxes at
commercial flight and have them here for replacement very fast. He
told me the parts took a day or two longer since we have the one and
only v1280 on this island, and they don't store them locally, but he
called the office to make that change after I corrected him that we
have three v1280, he only saw one at a remote site. I don't think the
license make that much difference when the majorty of their os uses
are tied with their hardwares, making money to pay their bills is the
goal, that's almosts everyone's goal, without that.. I wouldn't be
able to buy the hardwares to play with Linux, bsd and whatever at
home. I love open source, but that doesn't make me hate every thing
else, this world have enough room to fit all flavors, even SCO has it
place to make Linux adopt faster. Thanks to Solaris that I can lay
back at work except when the Winbloze PDC and SDC start screaming at
me to kick them. Do I like taking care of Winbloze servers also? no,
I don't, but it's part of my job as a SA.

Just my personal view who have to pay his mortage(wish it's free too)
at the end of each month.

No, it wasn't KDE, I recompiled the kernel with athlon, then ended up
recompling ivtv, lirc and other needed modules, reinstalled nvidia
driver, system came up fast but with no sound. It was pretty good
with very low load average, video not jerky while compiling. I have to
recompile alsa 1.09 to get the sound working again on via82xx, looks
like kernel/OSS driver not good for my board. I was back to that
heavy load average with sound working again, I guess I nailed down the
cause, most likely the sound modules, I will try the bleeding version
later see if it's better.

-15" or nice level of "-15" ?

This was the first thing I disabled before any myth stuff getting on
to the hard drive, there's no way I need MAC and DAC on my mythtv.

Do I need to bleed for ionice? I remember back in years ago, I was
chasing kernel release on 1.3.x tree to get ip masq working on my
33.6k dial up, stop doing that since the lap over of glib, remember
new lib on kernel 2.x.x ?

Mine is fine if I don't start compiling stuff on it, I can get one of
the backend to record and watch live tv or play back, I was just
suprise at the load average since the switch from Mandrake.

I was compiling since .11 running on the good old Mandrake, I am just
tired of compiling and try to find a easy way out, well.. there's
another reason, .18 starting to use qt3.3 on some plugins, so I am too
lazy to upgrade from qt3.1 to qt3.3. I will recompile it again to
compare with the atrpms, but I will try to solve the high load average
cause by sound modules first.

720x480 bitrate 4.5k max 6k, I did try 3k.. same problem, but
shouldn't matter much to the cpu on hardware encoder right?

This is true when it was running Mandrake 9.2, I tried ivtv from .2,
.3.2, .3.3s,l,z and now on .3.5l on fedora, ivtv wasn't one of the
cause. I saw 0.7 load average in Mandrake during normal use, but it
move around in fedora from 0.8 to 2.5 while watching live tv.

I want to blame the HD also, but same hardware on Mandrake was fine,
so I disabled selinux totally since it uses ACL on HD, and the HD
setup look okay to me, :
hdparm /dev/hda

/dev/hda:

Yup, already on 7117 I think, nvidia-setting is a nice utility for
over scan and adjust blanking.

Any thing else which I am over looking? I am recompiling the kernel
today to see if that make a different. I did some search on google,
there are alot of complain on fedora running slower compair to some
other dist, I want to nail down the cause first else I will be

[LUAU] Fedora & mythtv cpu load

2005-06-13 Thread Whoever Whatever
Hi,
I was running Mandrake 9.2 for mythtv up to .18.1 on a shuttle
sk41g using PVR350 for about 2 years, nvidia tv-out, no problem
watching live tv or recording while compiling. So, I decided to
switch to Fedora core 3 few weeks ago, aptrpm get the mythtv-suite, it
stutter a little when starting live tv, the frontend using about
25-32% of the cpu load, video/audio hicup when I did apt-get update,
then I decided to re-compile some plugins today, live tv or playback
un-watchable, it pause and/or stutter while compiling. Does anyone
know have experience why fedora so much slower on the same hardware? I
was hunting for the cause for a while, but not able to trace it down.
HD is enabled with DMA, using KDE as WM, the only difference would
be xorg server on fedora, xwindow on Mandrake. Thanks for the help.

SK41G, VIA chipset, AMD 2400+ xp, 512mb DDR266, WD 160Gb hard driver,
onboard VIA sound, nvidia AGP MX420 with tv-out, PVR350.

Thanks
