[luau] hawaii political sites

2002-08-12 Thread Eric Hattemer
Anyone been to www.gophawaii.com or www.lindalingle.com lately? Both of
them beep and talk to you and things like that. I mean the sites are laid
out pretty well otherwise, but I thought the sounds were a little excessive.
Has anyone ever found that sounds actually made a website better? Sorry to
those of you who are using links/lynx/elinks and have no idea of what I'm
talking about.

[luau] hawaii political sites

2002-08-12 Thread W. Wayne Liauh

Anyone been to www.gophawaii.com or www.lindalingle.com lately?

I am a life-long Republican, but I found it extremely bad taste for both sites
to run on IIS under Win2K. Even the Whilehouse webpage is running on Linux.

OK,

Question for teh web wizards out there. How did you figure this out???

snip

Actually both White House (whitehouse.gov) and Kremlin run their
webpages on Linux.

While no web wizard, I can tell you that netcraft.com will tell you what any
website is running.

Netcraft uses the HTTP headers to determine the server.

telnet www.example.net 80
HEAD / HTTP/1.0
hit enter twice

The HTTP server will be listed.

They also use TCP analysis in order to attempt to detect the operating
system of the server. Sometimes they have strange and impossible
combinations like Linux + Microsoft IIS web server because a Linux proxy
or load-balancer is in front of the web server.
