I will always remember the very nice iBook one of the cashiers at Price Busters showed me and said that her cousin had bought it for only $200, without the power supply. It was so hot I wouldn't even touch it. I asked her to please report it. What stands out is that the thief did not take the laptop to a shop, he sold it as is to a friend, who then gave it to his cousin, the cashier, so that she could as her company's computer guy. If these laptops take a similar route, I fear that it would be hard to recover them. Re: [luau] Be on the lookout for Stolen laptops
Theres retail products available for notebook recovery (must be implimented prior to theft). Some involve GPS while others are just stickers or insurance etc. Putting identifying marks on the laptop do not hurt ( http://www.honolulupd.org/community/opid.htm ). Report it stolen to the police with all this info, pictures recommended. Then you can check HPD Evidence/Lost and Found at 529-3283. They used to have an online lsiting but not anymore. I would try to avoid it in the first place. By using smartcards you could really piss-off the thieves so they end-up asking a smart person for help reconfiguring it (and increase chances that it'll get turned-in). Fujitsu/Seimens notebooks (and even sceneic desktops w/ a optional reader) supported smartcard auth in the bios. Combine that with a really small lifebook and it would be very difficult hack the bios, etc. the white paper on it is here: http://support.fujitsu-siemens.de/SecurityCD/Docu/UK/PC-Security/wp_systemlock_e.pdf Tom R. Re: [luau] Be on the lookout for Stolen laptops
Today's BIOS now allows a password protection option. If implemented, this will prevent anyone from re-installing or even using your computer. However, I am sure most know how to bypass this by draining your CMOS battery. Of course, you could supposedly install a little GPS in your laptop and if the BIOS login fails xx times it will send a signal to give its location. Or something like that. But a more effective way is to give our police more equitable pay, as well as more budget for ice education/rehabilitation. Of course, using our prescious police resources to SWAT a 76-old lady who unknowingly uses a $10 counterfeit bill does not help the situation. R. It also doesn't help that we have them directing traffic at any construction site instead of using construction crews like they do on the mainland. Perhaps they do this off-hours for extra pay, but if they are directing traffic while on County pay and while benefitting a construction company, then it is no wonder that a trunk in Ala Moana is an easy daylight target. --scott

nah the issue is the stuff on the machineslike the working notes for magazine reviews, contact info, etc The request is for folks to keep an eye out for them since someone is going to have to regen those laptops. Not getting ticked off does not drive up insurance rates. I'd be interested in facts behind anger and crime. Any that exist would be contrary to your claim about crime proliferation. Angry people do not think clearly and commit crimes. Or at least think about it. It [anger] is solely for the benefit of your psychological well-being since it is merely an emotion. The act of theft or persons invested in one's policy do drive up insurance rates. Did you know insurance companies invest in things like accident and crime prevention? It is to their benefit and yours as a point of representation uniting consumers and Jane Q. Citizens. They deal with the local authorities alot more than I. Instead of crack, I think you may be reffering to methamphetamines in Hawaii. I remember that last year those high numbers reported were later reported to be from an unreliable source (iirc, it was either HPD or UH) or inflated to invoke a response. Years ago I had a $400 tool stolen from my trunk in Hilo; the tool belonged to the contractor I was working for.He shurged it off,but next morning went to the local pawn shops and there it was.
