Software available for free for schools:
Any Linux desktop software including
* Web Browsers - Mozilla, Netscape, Opera, Konqueror, Galeon, etc.
* OpenOffice 1.0.1 available for free
* StarOffice 6.0 is better, and available for unlimited free license for
schools if the school registers with Sun. If the school has registered
under the Sun Microsystems academic license, I will install and configure
StarOffice 6.0 for the clients.
* GIMP graphics editing
* almost any other software you can find for the Linux desktop

Configuring this properly is NOT trivial, especially StarOffice/OpenOffice
because of its stupid "Workstation" install needed for every user. Over the
past few months we have automated this "Workstation" install, but it
requires customization after the LTSP server install to work properly.

This is not why they are being unloaded quickly. These are absolutely
required or the system will NOT be setup properly, maintained properly or
used effectively by the school.

With all that fine print I can see why we're not unloading them fast. I
hope the non-profit idea flies.

MessageWe can give you machines usable as thin clients, but you would need
to buy several things yourself.

1. Server - roughly $800
Minimal requirements - Single Athlon with 512MB ECC RAM in order to handle 5
LTSP stations. Make sure the motherboard has large upgradability with RAM
so you can easily accomodate additional thin clients in the future. Let me
know and I will price you out a recommended system. I would like to build
and configure your server.
2. Bootable Network Cards
Something like 3Com 3c905-txm or any other card with onboard PXE. Also
Linksys LNE100TX with etherboot bootrom chip works. I heard there's similar
cards from SMC and DLink that are also tftp bootable. We are getting a pack
of 50 3c905-txm cards for St. John and Mid-Pac. I may be able to sell you a
few of those cards.
3. Switches, cat5 cabling, etc.
4. I will require all schools receiving my help to subscribe to RHN services
for their servers. This is $60/year ($5 per month). Trust me, $5 a month
is worth your time. They e-mail you when new package updates are available.
RHN service makes updating and installing new packages very quick and easy.

Additionally please have your school fill out this form in order to receive
the unlimited free academic license for StarOffice 6.0 for both Windows and
Linux.

Call for Help.
Windward Nazarene Academy in Kaneohe is in need of a 4 or 5 station ltsp
lab. Also as an inticement for teachers to get newer machines I would like
to set up a couple of non terminal server workstations. I am the technology
coordinator (volunteer) for this school so I will be the contact. The
principal is all for it. I am not a novice Linux user but far from a
proficient Linux sysadmin.

Thanks in advance,
Wade Stockton

I'm new to the list, but did I just read it right that you have tons of
computers, loaded with Linux, just waiting to be deployed to a school? If
so, I know of a school that might be interested. What's on the machines
re software and hardware?

On another note, I'm a software developer (Java, PHP, C++, etc) with
decent linux skills and I'd love to help out with this project in any way
possible.

Great to hear from you about this, Wade. I have not hear back from Pastor
AhSing about accepting the numerous stations Warren and crew have prepared,
so WNA would be a great start.

As Warren could confirm, MidPac has gotten chock full of computers.
Strangely enough, the project is starting to grind to a halt because there
have not been enough schools found to accept the finished product. The good
managers, Julie and Robert, at our new Pricebusters Stadium store have been
kind enough to dedicate space to store the huge volume of machines Cody and
Brent are getting us from Hickam. I have been too busy to post what all is
building up there, but, it is alot. Tomorrow these guys are bringing a small
Uhaul full of machines and monitors and they still need me to bring my pickup.

So unless Warren has found another spot, we were definitely looking for a
recipient as recently as last week. Any of you interested should know that
the project is moving forward. With tomorrow's delivery I am certain that we
will need some more hands in this pie. It is tasty, and it can benefit the
right people with your help.
