Should be fine,98,98SE up will provide USB,you wouldn't have Dos support
for mouse or Keybd if BIOS doesn't support it.Inside OS,OK.

did for a Visor Hand Held on another box?

I have a Belkin USB to Serial adaptor, and it works great in Linux.
