[Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu compressed ISO file?

2010-05-11 Thread ryan14
Currently lubuntu 10.04 is available as an ISO file from
http://lubuntu.net. I have a slow broadband connection so would it be
possible for you to offer a compressed version of the ISO in the .ZIP
file format? The ISO file is 521MB, so if you compressed it into a .ZIP
file, what will the new file size be? 500MB? Any decrease in file size
is good.

Most of the iso is already compressed, not sure we will gain many space. If you
have a slow connection, you should try the bittorent file, to be able to stop
and resume the download when you want.

Hi Julien,

I don't think the minimal install route pulls in all the language packs,
could this be an option?

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu compressed ISO file?

2010-05-11 Thread Andrew Woodhead
ZIP doesn't do a fabulous job of compression, Bzip will get the data
significantly smaller. Hosting both files will require more storage on the
server side and essentially double the space needed to store the same info.
If space is a luxury then I'd say do it, otherwise you may have to bite the
bullet for an extra 12Mb.
Set the download running overnight and go to bed, the file will be
downloaded when you wake up :)

It's included in the iso, if you want to remove them, you need to generate
another iso. Maybe at some point a minimal iso will be generated, for this
purpose, but I don't know when I'll have the time to do it.

i was thinking possibly down-loading the minmal.iso, and then doing the
desktop install form that. It *should* be smaller in terms of data
downloaded ?

Yes that's true, the mini.iso is 12.5 mb, and you'll have to install
another ~350mb afterwords I think. So that saves quite a lot!

Yes as you will only download what you need instead of the full OS which may
contain files and apps you do not need

[Lubuntu-desktop] What to look forward to?

2010-05-11 Thread Bob Trevithick
Is it likely that we'll be seeing a Lubuntu Alpha 1 coming out with
the rest of the 'buntu 10.10 Alpha releases?

I sure hope so. Lubuntu is what I've spent a long time looking for.
I see it as an all-purpose distro. I put it on my AMD dual-core 4G
desktop box, thinking it was just to play with it, and I've rarely
booted anything else since. :)

Can't wait to see how this unfolds.

Nice job, folks!

Bob

[Lubuntu-desktop] minimal install

2010-05-11 Thread Phillip Whiteside
Hi Julien,

I know that you do not have time to make a minimal iso, however having
chatted to some 'nice people' it appears that I (or anyone) should actually
be able to do it. It's called remastersys and how it works is at
http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/remastersys I've no need to bore you with how
it works, simply put - It takes your installed system and creates an iso
with an md5 checksum.

Once you have (all) stopped laughing, according to the wiki entry
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remastersys You can make it CLI install. So,
I'd follow the minimal install instructions onto a partition & then make the
iso (in theory). Well, I'm willing to give it a try if you think it may be
of help.

On a slightly different note, but to save me posting another email to you. I
was asking ibuclaw about why the cd would fail self test, yet pass the other
md5checksum test. Ibuclaw asked when you would be about, he was running
through some stuff with me but it was way over my technical knowledge. He
said that he could have a chat with you. As you know, Iain has already
provided one patch to lubuntu (pcmanfm) and I count him as one of the 'nice
people' I chat to on the 'official' ubuntu area.

If you keep an eye on ##ufbt you will be able to see if he is logged on
(yes, I have been given permission for you to stalk him on there).

Regards,

Phill.
