Thanks for the help. But I think it's too much efforts for us now, as I would
like to introduce some facilities for minimal installation. Also, I can re-use
my build system for iso to make a minimal one, it's far easier and safe than
remasterys the current one. I can't stop you to try this, but if you can wait
a week (the time for me to go back to home), it will be available.

On a slightly different note, but to save me posting another email to you. I
was asking ibuclaw about why the cd would fail self test, yet pass the other
md5checksum test. Ibuclaw asked when you would be about, he was running

I can't really help until I'll be back home, I'll contact him after that.

[Lubuntu-desktop] A Newbie Question about Autostarting

2010-05-12 Thread Lane Lester
I'm a long-time user of Ubuntu. Lately I've been using Openbox for my WM, so
I decided to try Lubuntu and get rid of some unused overhead.

I'm also a fan of Conky, and I quickly learned that it didn't get along with
pcmanfm. So I've commented it out and am using feh to manage my wallpapers.
I like it for its ability to rotate wallpapers on a schedule.

After some initial dismay I was pleased to find the option in Preferences to
enable window manager desktop menus.

A message on here today led me to the Ubuntu wiki page of derivatives, and I
was surprised Lubuntu wasn't there.

One confusing thing is the number of autostart folders and files. I
managed to edit enough of them to get most things the way I want, but I
still can't get alarmclock to start even though it runs fine from the menu.
Is there an official Lubuntu way to autostart programs?

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] minimal install

2010-05-12 Thread Leszek Lesner

Hi Phill,

if you in a desperate need of a minimal install cd I can build one. But
how should it look like ? A ubuntu minimal CD with all the deb packages
using debian installer ? Or a minimal LiveCD with only lxde as a desktop
that allows you to install the system with a cli installer ?
The first one is a little pain of work. The second one not so much, as I
already have a cli installer written for zevenos-neptune (debian based)
that will also work flawessly on lubuntu if the dialog package is
installed. And btw. I have build my own remastersys kind of tool
called remaster-kit that also works flawlessly (yes I had bad
experiences with remastersys) with lubuntu (as long as you know
something about cli and chroot usage). As it is a kind of dry topic. I
made a small video showing both tools.
Here is the link: http://blip.tv/file/3612824 (Including a link for the
source and deb)
All in all I would think making a 'real' minimal InstallCD might be a
better solution as it supports more installation methods and special
configurations for LVM and encryption.

Have fun ;)

Once you have (all) stopped laughing, according to the wiki entry
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remastersys You can make it CLI
install. So, I'd follow the minimal install instructions onto a
partition then make the iso (in theory). Well, I'm willing to give
it a try if you think it may be of help.

Make a symlink to the .desktop file in /usr/share/applications/name.desktop
in ~/.config/autostart

and it will run.

Open PCManFM and go to Edit Preferences Desktop. There is an option
Manage the desktop and show icon files. Turning this off removes all icons
from the desktop.

You have to have it, or no icons at all. Your choice.

There doesn't seem to be a Desktop tab under edit preferences.

[Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu and high memory consumption

2010-05-12 Thread Keith Clark
I have installed lubuntu-desktop on my computer which is running Ubuntu
10.04.

When I start up Ubuntu and open Terminal and run htop, I see that I'm
using 152 MB of RAM.

I start Lubuntu and open LXTerminal and run htop, and I'm using 200 MB
of RAM!

Why does Lubuntu use significantly more RAM then Ubuntu?

That certainly got my attention, since I just switched from U Lucid to L
Lucid in hopes of getting a slimmer system. But I can confirm your
observations to some extent:
Ubuntu Lucid: 157 MB
Lubuntu Lucid: 138 MB...

but I have pcmanfm disabled so I can run conky,
and I have lxpanel disabled so I can run tint2.
which may account for the difference in our reports.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu and high memory consumption

2010-05-12 Thread PCMan
1. This may be caused by bugs in ureadahead. Rebooting for several
times might fix this. On my box, Lubuntu uses less RAM than yours so I
cannot reproduce this.
2. PCManFM2 can work well with concky if your concky is configured
correctly. There is a blog post on http://blog.lxde.org/ for this
issue.
