Can’t get the ISO to install.
The MD5 hash is OK but, the check disk option tells me there is an error
in 1 file.
Any attempt to use/install results in the Lubuntu flashing dots screen
and then nothing.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu Maverick Alpha 1

It works fine here with that one exception of having to use
"nomodeset" to get it to boot.

Well, I should qualify this with, I installed it last night around
2am, used it for an hour or so, and then went to sleep. :) This
morning I'm cleaning it up, customizing it to be my main distro unless
something unforeseen happens. But it's an alpha.. so what could go
wrong? :)

Thanks folks.. this is really nice! I'm using it as I type this.

Let me know if I can do anything to assist with diagnosis of the iso...

Bob

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu Maverick Alpha 1

2010-06-14 Thread Jaeic Lee
Well...I did install Alpha with the ISO, but I used a different approach
from the usual.
Since I don't have a burner nearby, I extract vmlinuz and initrd.gz from the
ISO and use it to mount the ISO file while booting from a USB stick with
UBCD in it.

http://cpbotha.net/2010/05/24/an-even-more-ultimate-boot-disk/ - This shows
you how to do it.

However, I *should* try using it with a proper CD and see how it goes.

PS. It seems that the ISO doesn't work in Virtualbox, and interestingly
enough the outcome is exactly the same as Steve's.

PS2. ISO works fine when you use 'nomodeset', just as Bob suggested. I
wonder why it doesn't work without it?
Especially when the USB booting method that I used works okay without
'nomodeset'...

PS3. I think we need to have some guideline to help figure out which area of
Alpha we need to test. (it seems that https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing isn't
up-to-date yet.)

First, press any button when you see that tiny keyboard icon at the bottom
of the screen, which will take you to the main ISO menu.

And after selecting a language, press F6 to find 'nomodeset' at the second
to last option in the 'Other Options' menu.

When the option is checked (by either spacebar or enter key), press ESC,
then choose either 'Try Lubuntu...' or 'Install Lubuntu' to continue booting
from the ISO.

Hi Lane,

When booting the CD, hit the F6 key. The nomodeset option is second from
the bottom. Then, once installed, I needed to add the option to
/etc/default/grub.

The 'nomodeset' option was the first thing I tried, no luck.
I have since tried with an i810 and a nVidia 440, both of which work
with the 'nomdeset' option. The cards that don’t work, so far, are:-

Matrox G200
Intel 1740
nVidia RIVA 128
ATI Rage Pro
SiS 740
Cirrix V641

All of which work under 10.04. This is going to be a bit of a problem,
as these are all common video adapters in older machines.

Thanks, guys, for the help in trying the 'nomodeset.' Regretfully, it didn't
do the whole job, but at least this time I got an error message which
flashed repeatedly with several seconds between each flash:

Got it installed, using the 'nomodeset' option to boot the CD, using the nVidia
MX400 card. Strangely the 'nomodeset' option wasn’t required to boot the
installed system. Then changed the card back to the Matrox G200, which also
booted OK from HDD, as did all the others when I tried them. Strange.

Is it the same with a daily build of Ubuntu Maverick ?
Alpha was released a bit late, with maybe a X server quite unstable, the
last version of Xserver was released some days ago.

Also, I just see that if I try the CD in Virtualbox, without action, it
failed. But if you cancel the boot, and switching to the classic menu
(With "Try Lubuntu", "Install Lubuntu" etc ..), it's working.

Well, it's the first Alpha, we have time to fix those problems :)

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Alpha 1 PAE Kernel

2010-06-14 Thread Phillip Whiteside
hi Steve,

as of 10.04

"Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx)
Both the CD and DVD installer of Ubuntu 10.04 automatically installs the PAE
enabled kernel if it detects more than 3 Gb of available memory. In the case
of the liveCD, a working network connection is required, since the PAE
enabled kernel packages are not present on the CD."

I've just asked on #ubuntu+1

(22:50:28) phillw: hi folks, with 10.10 is the pae kernel for 32 bit going
to be the default?
(23:00:33) xx: phillw: It is already.
(23:01:25) xx: phillw: provided you have 3GB+ of available memory, and a
internet connection to download it automatically.

I'm a bit busy at the moment, but I will test this out on my 1Gb laptop,
hopefully others will be able to respond before I get it installed.

Oh, and from having had a hunt around, it also seems that dropping i586
support is causing some ripples

Hmm. I’ll have to have a look in the machine to see where the other 2.36GiB of
RAM are hiding :D

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Alpha 1 PAE Kernel

2010-06-14 Thread Andrew Woodhead
You only need PAE on 3Gb+ RAM as stated. 32bit address registers can only
hit ~3gb RAM so need special software to manage the memory addressing. This
is what PAE does and allows up to 12Gb RAM for 32bit Linux. If you only have
1Gb RAM then weather or not the kernel has PAE or not will not affect you :)

The minimal ISO will install the generic kernel only. I have not played with
the latest maverick Lubuntu yet so cannot vouch for if it uses PAE or not.

[Lubuntu-desktop] Fwd: Alpha 1 PAE Kernel

lol,

I've not got the link still up, but it does seem to have been a request from
OEM's that ubuntu kernel now detects 3+GB RAM as default with 10.10, instead
of requiring an internet link up to do so, from what I saw, the PAE is now
the default. This may also be part of the dropping pre i686 chipsets, I
guess you can dig through the UDS blogs to get more information (that's
where I got my snippets). Whilst this is more appilcable to 'ubuntu', for
the small over head it does kinda make sense for them to switch to it as the
default. As to row with i585, I guess that's down to how many people scream
and shout.

Phill.

I guess it's the nature of the alpha that we each experience things
differently. I tried the above approach, but X never started. There was just
a constant cycling of what looked like drive access errors.

I was unable at first to install the nvidia-current driver in my Ubuntu
Minimal CD installs, because synaptic threatened to remove xorg at the same
time. Then I added the xorg-edgers PPA repository, and I was able to add the
driver. Plus, the latest xorg upgrades have not caused any problems.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu Maverick Alpha 1

2010-06-14 Thread Phillip Whiteside
Hi,

as Julien says, Meerkat *will* get broken, can people please make a point of
keeping http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=385 on their bookmarks?
The X issue was, and is, flagged up on the 'stickies' area
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1503555 It is not as if it was a
surprise ;-)

On that sub forum area you will also be able to see just what the devs are
planning to break, and what they have broken. If they break something real
bad someone will pop on and give us a work-around. Apart from that, they
keep well clear ;-)

That's why I run the dev version of ubuntu and lubuntu it's easier to see if
it is a lubuntu problem, or something in the main package.

Regards,

Phill.
