 running the theme

Time ago, i tried several themes and I can confirm you that those engines
have a considerably negative impact on system resources.

I've tested the PPA on my freshly installed Lubuntu 10.04 (correctly
updated). Now the problem is that pcmanfm 0.9.8 can't replace
/usr/share/pcmanfm/uidesktop-pref.ui wich belongs too to package pcmanfm2

Hope this helps in any way for the feedbacks :)

Info to add to Lubuntu pages: removing lubuntu-desktop fixes the problem :)
... Or the update should remove this package?

[Lubuntu-desktop] pcmanfm seriously broken

2011-01-11 Thread Jean-Pierre Vidal Piesset
Hi Team:

Today i finally upgraded my 10.04 packages with the LXDE PPA released a time
ago. So far so good (and faster) but when i tried to right click a file
pcmanfm crashed... maybe it's because i open files with one single click i
thought, so i go to preferences and pcmanfm crashed again! Similar, but not
the same, it's when i go to preferences in desktop, i'm able to change the
wallpaper but when i click close the old wallpaper comes back and pcmanfm
crashes again!!

This bug it's just affecting me? How can i make a debug file?

So far it's all i can tell. I think this is critical for 10.04 users! Maybe
the upgrade is not ready yet for 10.04?
For now i just want to roll back pcmanfm libs to get the functionality
back... anybody knows how to do it?

Thanks for listening!

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Applications by default : control-center

Just tried this:
pcmanfm menu://applications/DesktopSettings
If the layout is not good, we can have a specialized menu file for it.

Personally, i find it perfect, fast clean, with no aditional programs, no
aditional anything.
It reminds me the no-fancy control center of wxp. The shortcut should open a
specialized window of pcman though.

+1 for pcmanfm-control-center

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Deadbeef in Lubuntu PPA

2010-11-24 Thread Jean-Pierre Vidal Piesset
Hiyas everybody:

I picked another PC to see how is the resource consumption changing
depending on the hardware, and the result is this:

On a new machine (AMD Turion Dual Core M520, 3GB RAM ~ Lubuntu 10.10)
Aqualung 4%CPU 32RAM
Deadbeef 4%CPU 25RAM
Audacious 4%CPU 17RAM

On my old laptop (P3 700MHZ, 256MB RAM ~ Lubuntu 10.04):
Aqualung 28%CPU 28RAM
Deadbeef 16%CPU 24RAM
Audacious 9%CPU 19RAM

Freshly installed Audacious consumes a little more RAM, i think because is
doing something on the background... can you check again for it Julien? For
me, first run was about 28RAM and minutes later and all the runs after that
were about 18RAM.

I'll try to send a report from the computers i have acces to.
Hope it helps on the decision!

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Deadbeef in Lubuntu PPA

2010-11-15 Thread Jean-Pierre Vidal Piesset
In my machine:
Aqualung:28%CPU / 28 Mb Ram
Deadbeef:15-17%CPU / 24 Mb Ram

Audacious: 9%CPU / 19 Mb Ram (my favourite)

For others:

Less RAM consumption scenario:
Deadbeef 80% CPU usage 23 MB RAM
Aqualung50% CPU usage 26 MB RAM

Less CPU consumption scenario:
Deadbeef : 18 % CPU / 25 Mb RAM
Aqualung : 25 % CPU / 33 Mb RAM

I tested them on a 731mhz 256MB ram Machine, so far between Deadbeef and
Aqualung i prefer from far Deadbeef.

But let me tell you that the behaviour of Audacious compared to these two
others is far better. Is there something that i'm missing with this program?

[Lubuntu-desktop] Xscreensaver Power Manager

2010-11-11 Thread Jean-Pierre Vidal Piesset
Hi People:

Few days ago, i came to realize that i can't shut down xscreensaver.
Actually, i don't use it at all since i only want mi screen to go black when
a time has past... Well, the thing is that in the options in xscreensaver, i
can kill the daemon BUT when i restart mi pc, xcreensaver is still there!
And really don't know at all how to turn it off (maybe (hopefully) someone
will tell me how to do it accesing a conf file, but it should be an easier
way)

Second, once with xcreensaver disabled, gnome-power-manager don't do as i
told him: black screen after 5 minutes. 5 minutes later, nothing.

And third, there's NO WAY to go to the energy options through the Lubuntu
main menu (don't know how to call it) and only can get to the options by
unplugging mi pc from electricity so the battery shows up in lxpanel.

I'm still using 10.04 so maybe things are different in 10.10... can anybody
check this?

I remembered the program that used to control the theme in win98... how
difficult could be to implement a script like that to lxappareance? a label
more called themes that sets openbox theme, gtk theme, wallpaper and
lxmenu-icon all at once?
It could be a great great thing to do for lubuntu!!

Other thing: when Lubuntu is freshly installed, Chromium has its own theme
by default... it would be nice if it had the option use the gtk theme by
default.

I'm totally agree with you

It's not a big packet and it's needed if people wants to use the LiveCD with

[Lubuntu-desktop] Performance in 10.10?

2010-10-07 Thread Jean-Pierre Vidal Piesset

10.04.

I readed a bit around and someones tell it'll be better and others the
opposite, so i don't really know who to believe.

I have limited internet conection and an old piece of hardware, so
downloading an ISO and installing it should be for something better.

Actually i'm running Lubuntu 10.04 and my ram consumption is 71MB freshly
started (booting in 50 secs). P3, 1000mhz @256mb ram

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Video Problem

2010-10-06 Thread Jean-Pierre Vidal Piesset
Yeah, i know it's old... but only now i've get it to work

I did what Julien told me to:

*You can try to use the last development iso of Ubuntu, and see if the
situation
is better.*
*You can also try using the last code from upstream using the xorg-edgers PPA
(https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers) and see if the situation is better (but
read the warning on the page before :))*

So i added the 'stables' ppa from
https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/drivers-only, and after that,
update+upgrade... and now my old ati radeon m6 (8mb) works smoothly and
fast! (i cant see videos with a nice res perfectly smooth)

If anyone knows somebody with this type of cards using 10.04, tell him/her
that it's a MUST to install those packages!!

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] plymouth

2010-10-02 Thread Jean-Pierre Vidal Piesset
Since Lubuntu is intended for low specs machines, 'splashscreen' could be
just a text saying 'Lubuntu' and in the line under that one, 5 'o' appearing
in a set of time, so it makes consistence with the idea of the distro (and
trully think that this would me a lot easier to do and time saving to
startup).

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] plymouth

2010-10-02 Thread Jean-Pierre Vidal Piesset
First: Isn't there a way to get a text based splashcreen without plymouth??
it would result a faster boot! (and less complicated?)
Second: a text based installer seems to me an excellent idea to make the
installation fast, since many of us and the rest of the possible users of
lubuntu would possibly use it to revamp an old machine!!
Third: the text based installer should be by default and exist no other.
Doing this, then we will not be dependent of some things that goes nuts, or
another ones that are consuming much ram AND the install would be FAST.

It's just my humble opinion :)

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Evince?

2010-09-10 Thread Jean-Pierre Vidal Piesset
Hi Andrew Lubuntu team:

It's the same for the others pdf viewers such as adobe, foxit, etc... in
computers with a more powerful video card as mine (8mb) scrolling seems just
fine (i have another pc with 128mb and it works perfect), but since Lubuntu
it's made for low pcs we must think that people that's going to use it don't
have powerful hardware. Am i the only one who notices it?
Arguments made by Rafael and Yorvyk are quite enough for me to accept the
change, i'm just suggesting to contact Evince's developers to look at the
scrolling improvement to make Evince better, faster and more usable for old
computers.

I'm going to try again and again untill i can suggest it.

Regards.

[Lubuntu-desktop] Video Problem

2010-08-26 Thread Jean-Pierre Vidal Piesset
Hi everybody:

Since ubuntu 9.10 i have problems with the driver for my video card. It's an
old Ati radeon mobility m6 and the way it works is with the open driver
provided by ubuntu for those cards 'cause the pivative driver doesn't work
for me at all.
Well, back in 9.10 the problem was that somethings were shown wrong, others
were not shown but everything was quite fast as i remember. Now in
10.04 everything
is SLOW!, splashscreen at startup and at closing shows every color existant
and sometimes some window borders are not shown.

I want to help with this, testing the last driver, sending reports... i
don't know... want to do something but i don't know how or where. Maybe
someone could point me in the right direction...

[Lubuntu-desktop] modem 3g

2010-08-03 Thread Jean-Pierre Vidal Piesset
Hi

I've looked to several pages (the most complete is
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1472896) and there's no way to get
my 3g modem to work... is there something that i'm missing?

As i've said in the forum (that shows as Solved) i tried the solution and
nothing happens.

My modem is a Huawei e226.

[Lubuntu-desktop] Some suggestions

2010-07-14 Thread Jean-Pierre Vidal Piesset
The following text is in Spanish...

Estimados:

exagera resultando algo horrible. Firefox y Midori no tienen éste problema.

Translated is this...
First I congratulate for the excellent work Lubuntu, everything works pretty
well.
I want to comment that i use this operating system on a Compaq 1700
(1000mhz, 256...@100mhz) and I emerge the following problems:

   1. Chromium is very light, but has a problem with the scrolling (it's a
known problem). On older computers like mine the effect is exaggerated
resulting horrible. Firefox and Midori does not have this problem.
   2. Chromium has too many animations, such as opening a new tab or page
new tab, making it difficult things the old computers.
   3. Gnome office is a light office suite but very poor, Open Office is
heavier but is a real working tool.

Solutions:

   1. I have heard that Firefox has been optimized for use in Ubuntu, you
can not do something similar with Chromium and Lubuntu? (or create an app
eliminating all those fancy animations, installed by default in lubuntu)
   2. Open Office works for me pretty well (once it has made some
arrangements and off Java), a bit slow to start but nothing unbearable. I
recomend Open Office but this is very subjective

I want to help with Lubuntu but i have no programming skills... how can i
help?

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Some suggestions

2010-07-14 Thread Jean-Pierre Vidal Piesset
Hi:

First of all, i'm not complaining, i'm just saying that a program is better
than another, but the reasons to use abiword and gnumeric are quite solid so
i wont say anything else about that.
Second, i've found WICD, an app that could replace network manager in
lubuntu 10.10 to be far independent from gnome... has someone tried it? is
it good enough?
Third, for Chromium my idea was to make an add-on that eliminates all the
animations from the program itself.
Fourth, xubuntu cosumes more ram than ubuntu itself.

A question... how's going the thing about being a part of canonical family?
