The Lubuntu Natty Beta 1 ISO is now available for testing. - New theme made by Raphael Laguna Really nice! Love the new look. A question: I installed LibreOffice on top of beta1, and it's menu fonts look horrible (tried Writer, Calc, etc..all the same). Any idea how can I configure the libreoffice suite to look good under lubuntu? Any tips? Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu for anyone?
Hi Tim all, I asked the same questions to myself several times :) I tried to fully switch to Lubuntu several times but till now I always went back to regular Ubuntu. I love Lubuntu's (LXDE's) simplicity and leanness, but for various reasons there is always some small bug or misbehavior that makes me go back to Ubuntu. I would love to have a 100% perfect Lubuntu (as most probably everybody here does), and make a complete switch to this distribution, but it did not happen so far. It is very clear to everybody who uses it that it becomes better and better with each release. 11.04 is (or will be) better that 10.10 and much better that 10.04. Congrats and big thank to everybody who puts long hours and energy creating this new distribution polished. The goal is clear, it is for old computers and/or low resource computers (sometimes it's the same thing) and average people who just installs it and uses it (no tweaking should be required). However there is a user group (including myself in here) who uses it on more powerful computers and likes this distro for it's leanness (or looks?). Of course it's frustrating if something does not work, but people here on this mailing list are very friendly and helpful, help is almost immediate. Thanks for this also! Thank you Lubuntu/LXDE Team and I'm looking forward for the second beta image :) Zoltan On Thu, Dec 30, 2010 at 5:22 AM, Tim Bernhard ohiom...@gmail.com wrote: Hi everyone, I was thinking about this the past couple of days and figured I would throw it out there. Does Lubuntu handle basic tasks well enough that anyone can use it? I've been using Ubuntu since 6.04 and by 8.04 I pretty much gave up Windows all together. (I keep a copy on my machine just in case, but never really need to use it.) I've also played around with Fedora and more recently Peppermint and Lubuntu. In addition, I took two Red Hat Enterprise Linux Administrator course while finishing up my Enterprise Computer Programming degree at a local community college. Despite all of that I am NOT a expert Linux user. I prefer GUI over command line for most tasks. And I usually have to do a little research when trying to solve issues with my OS. I can do the basics in Linux, but really not much more without Google. So I would say I'm armed with a lot more Linux knowledge than your typical newbie, but not really skilled at it using it. So here's the deal. I've run across several issues while using Lubuntu that have consume a little more of my time that I would have liked. Mostly just little things, but they have all been things that I would expect my OS to handle out of the box. Here is my short list: 1. Installing from USB didn't work until I made the USB without storage. 2. Grub not updating after install. 3. Chrome not opening downloads properly until I changed xdg-open. 4. Having to learn how to add menu items to lxde. 5. Not being able to find my NAS from PCmanFM. 6. Loosing some of my changes when Lubuntu updates. (Am I doing something wrong here???) I'll admit that the list isn't too bad, but keep in mind that I had to spend a good bit of time researching and implementing the solutions. So the question is what is the ultimate goal for Lubuntu. I know you guys want it to be resource friendly. But who is it aimed at? The Linux geek who can tweak it or the average Joe who just want to be able to use it? Can it be resource friendly and not need tweaking? Is it just a matter of time to sort it out or a matter philosophy? Personally, I would like to see it stay lightweight AND handle all of the basics at the same time. I realize Lubuntu is young and the devs are busting their asses on it. I really do appreciate it, but I really believe that details matter and I hoping the Lubuntu team agrees because I want Lubuntu to succeed. Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] proxy setup?
Installed Rabbit4.8 (a simple java proxy, which is really easy to use by the way), and got it up and running in no time. Probably squid is also easy to set up, I just did not have the time to try it. LXProxy is not acceptable for me, since logging out and back again is not something I would do for a proxy setting change. Unfortunatelly in Chromium 8.0.552.215 (67652) Ubuntu 10.10, I can not add proxy configuration to my browser. When I click on Change proxy settings, I'm getting: When running Chromium under a supported desktop environment, the system proxy settings will be used. However, either your system is not supported or there was a problem launching your system configuration. But you can still configure via the command line. Please see man chromium-browser for more information on flags and environment variables. This is too bad. Is this also related to the fact that LXDE is a simple window manager ? (bug related to the issue that Chromium can not determine if it's default browser or not): https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=53066 Installed Midori and FF, both could be configured to use the above mentioned proxy (in general, proxies could be added to these browsers). thanks Zoltan ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop Post to : lubuntu-desktop@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Experience with Alpha2 release: 1. If there is an internet connection during install it installs OpenOffice by default. If you don't want OO, just disable your internet connection, it worked for me... this is just a temporary solution (I hope :) 2. Still can't change keyboard layout (no option in GUI, had to reinstall) 3. Can't change timezone (no option in GUI) - had to reinstall OS in order to change it at setup time 4. xscreensaver /usr/share/backgrounds/ is still missing (directory has to be created manually, same problem was there in Aplha1) 5. On my compaq nc6320 wifi card (broadcom) was not recognized (had to install jockey-gtk). This is same in regular Ubuntu as well. 6. No flash plugin in browser (not sure if this is planned in final release or not). I installed it manually. 7. Printing got included in this release (was missing in Alpha1), but stil can not add printer (New and Server/Settings is disabled ) I need flash and Java (for applets) in my browser, plus my wifi card to be recognized, so I run the following commands on top of a regular Lubuntu install: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install jockey-gtk sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer sudo apt-get install sun-java6-plugin sudo apt-get install update-manager sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get autoremove Did some disk space measurements with df, here are the values: clean install with openoffice.org 1.749.168 clean install without openoffice 1.129.184 after adding flashplugin, sun-java6, jockey-gtk and update-manager 1.267.352 Overall it's great, I love it, and there is visible improvement. Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu Lucid Alpha 1 Preview
Hi, I have a 10 year old Dell Latitude CPt (celeron 333, 512MB RAM). It's been sitting in the closet for the past 4-5 years. Couldn't install Lubuntu on it, neither could I run it from CD. Not sure what is the problem. During install I saw several messages like: Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block , then just got a blank (black) screen and cd is spinning. Is this problem caused by a bad CD image? I had winXP running on it before, then I tried Masonux (ubuntu 9.10 and LXDE), which installed and run fine. If you can guide me I can do some debugging what to do to figure out where is the problem, but I'm not an experienced linux user, so can't do much more right now. Another install I did on a 5-6 year old desktop (Shuttle SS51, P4 1.8GHz, 512MB ram). No problems at all, it flies (it feels much faster than regular Ubuntu, but not sure how can it be measured). The only problem I had is that I only allocated 2.2GB hard disk to the partition I was installing it, and complained that it needs at least 2.4GB, so 2.6GB did the trick :). After installation I checked and Lubuntu uses a little more than 1GB of disk space. Nice. After playing with this distro for a few hours these are my remarks: Things I changed: desktop background and the Program/Start icon, I just simply can't get used to lxde logo. To me it seems ugly, sorry :( Things missing by Firefox from sites I visited: Flash and Java. Thing I miss from Ubuntu: date/time has location and temperature notification. Can this be added somehow? What component is that in regular Ubuntu? That's something I got used to and really miss it. Lubuntu is a really nice, clean, lean distro. Love it more and more. Thanks guys. Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu Lucid Alpha 1 Preview
How do I add a printer? I guess a Printer Configuration tool would be needed. thanks Zoltan On Wed, Dec 30, 2009 at 5:07 PM, Julien Lavergne gi...@ubuntu.com wrote: Hi, I just generated the first real ISO for Lubuntu Lucid, available for testing. [Lubuntu-desktop] lubuntu desktop image?
Hi all, There has been lots of emails about what packages to include in the new LUbuntu distribution. Seems like the list is somewhat final. I would like to install it and test the current version. I could not find any iso image available. Could you please guide me what to do? As a temporary solution what I did, is I first got a masonux distribution (9.10 beta2, it's an Ubuntu 9.10 + LXDE distro) and then sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop Any ISO image and/or usb image would do (found some old ones from september, but since then lot of things changed). Thanks for your help in advance.
