I think it's a good idea to collect usages of dual monitor users first.

For example, I use dual monitors on a desktop computer like this :
- I have one main screen, where I mainly works and stay focus on it.
- I expect to have on this main screen the panel and the icons
- I doesn't matter where is the wallpaper :)
- I don't plan to plug and unplug my monitors :)

But, when you use it as a laptop user, it's probably different
(presentation, frequently plug and unplug ...).

Julien

Things goes much more complicated since X supports XRandR, Xinerama, other
 vendor-specific solutions, X11 Display/Screen stuff. Implementation details
for them are totally different. So how exactly should a desktop behave and
be implemented? What will happen after Wayland is introduced and is widely
 accepted?
We had better have a conclusion on the specifications before anything is
going to be implemented. Comments needed. Thanks!

  In my setup, I prefer:
One panel on main monitor, none on secondary OR mirrored panels on both.
Icons on main monitor only (actually, I prefer a clean desktop with no icons
other than mounted devices).
One wallpaper per monitor, configurable.
xrandr works comfortably for me.

I woud vote for:
- one panel staying on main monitor, no panel on the external one
- icons on main monitor only.
- for the wallpaper i think this should be configurable, but blank by
default

[Lubuntu-desktop] Extend desktop across dual monitors -- a feature I would like to see in Lubuntu 12.xx

2011-10-06 Thread Tim Bernhard
Hello,

Is there anyway to add Extend Desktop option to the ...?

I was able to find out how to do from the terminal, but it would be really
nice if it were built into the system by default. It doesn't seen like it
would be too hard to build a script that would let the user set it up
through the GUI, but maybe I'm wrong.

Here is were I found out how to do it:
http://www.pixelshine.net/howto/2011/02/03/dual-monitors-lxde-lubuntu-fixed/
http://intellinuxgraphics.org/dualhead.html

At the very least, maybe this info could be linked to the wiki.

Thanks,

Tim

It was mooted is on the 'wish list'... However, as stated on
http://forum.phillw.net/viewtopic.php?f=18t=84 it does not work for
everyone, so advising caution telling people that they are 'on thier own'
is the best for now.

Thanks Phill,

I will try GrandR and see how it works on my laptops later today/tonight.
Both are fairly new so there probably won't be any surprises. One is
running Lubuntu and the other has Peppermint Two.

There is another trick that I use for my desktop, to workaround the
limitation of lxrandr :

1. Save a configuration using lxrandr = you should have a
~/.config/autostart/lxrandr-autostart.desktop
2. Install arandr
3. Configure your desktop using arandr
4. Save the layout inside ~/.screenlayout/layout.sh
5. Copy the command line (starting with xrandr) in
~/.screenlayout/layout.sh, and paste it in
~/.config/autostart/lxrandr-autostart.desktop, by replacing the text
after Exec=
6. On each restart, this layout will be preserved.

Sounds great. Will the configuration go back to default when I disconnect
the extra monitor without rebooting or will I need to reconfigure it? Can
you save more than one configuration?

No, it's not dynamic, you have to do it again if you unplug the monitor.

Can this kind of functionality be built into the system at some point?

Yes, it's a goal, but it's still not ready.
