Hi John: 1) Other Lubuntu users like me. Did the environment factor into your decision to start using Lubuntu? Did you use it to bring an old machine back to life? The reason i had to use this OS is that my machine was not working at all with XP and since with a P3 256 ram there's not a lot of OS that runs smoothly and are functional, i tried a lot of systems since i found it crazy to change a healthy machine because of it's OS! One day i found Lubuntu, tried it... and stayed with it since! For me, it has all the benefits of Ubuntu but it's very simple, clean... and really fast. Later, I even installed in a very old amd-k6 and runs nice. 2) Some data indicating that Lubuntu is more energy efficient. I've seen some claims along those lines, but does anyone have any proof that Lubuntu uses less electricity? I could not tell you with scientific proofs, but with Lubuntu my battery that has 10 years can work for more or less 1,6 hours (starting with the battery as power source) and i find it incredible... even once it lasted two hours, starting connected to AC power. I am a freelance writing and I am researching energy efficiency and sustainable computing. I installed Lubuntu on an old laptop that once had Windows and had gotten a very, very bad virus. The machine was just sitting around my apartment, but I didn't want to throw it in the trash or give it to a recycling company, some of which don't actually recycle the machines. I am looking for two things: 1) Other Lubuntu users like me. Did the environment factor into your decision to start using Lubuntu? Did you use it to bring an old machine back to life? 2) Some data indicating that Lubuntu is more energy efficient. I've seen some claims along those lines, but does anyone have any proof that Lubuntu uses less electricity? I'm not sure who I'll pitch this story to, assuming that there is one, but my previous work as been published in the New York Times and Scientific American. Hi John, Welcome aboard. To me, the environment is third or second, to be honest ;). I find it very nice to have (old, bad) batteries last longer and I also like the idea of having a fully functional desktop on a computer that costs a fraction of what a new machine (as would be required for the mainstream OS's) would cost. So economics and battery life is what decides it for me - with the environmental effect (or more precisely, lack of effect) is an added bonus. As for the scientific proof of the battery efficiency - I have not seen it, but I think it makes very much sense because you have lesser and smaller processes running, simply. John, Lubuntu working great for me with very little effort on my part. I'm using it as my only OS (though I do still have Windows 7 installed) on a nearly new Laptop running a dual-core Intel processor with 4GB of RAM. I settled on Lubuntu because I get 20-25% more runtime out of my battery compared to any other flavor of Ubuntu or Peppermint OS I have tried. It seems to use about 1-2 watts less Peppermint One or the stripped down Ubuntu Netbook Remix install I was using before. Lubuntu (well, it was LXDE at this time :)) bring more speed to this machine. No sure it extends the battery life, but as it uses less CPU, it should :) 2) Some data indicating that Lubuntu is more energy efficient. I've seen some claims along those lines, but does anyone have any proof that Lubuntu uses less electricity? The only study I'm aware about this is a Phoronix article : http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=articleitem=linux_desktop_vitalsnum=1 But it's difficult to compare such data, because LXDE/Lubuntu have less features than a GNOME/Ubuntu.
