The results above are the product of this:
- start the livecd with nomodeset checked
- typing startx in the line commands (X doesn't load :( )

Should I create a bug in X? graphic drivers? where...?

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] System won't boot in 11.10

2011-10-15 Thread Jean-Pierre Vidal Piesset

First of all tell us if it is a installed system or a live cd.

It is a live CD, i'm not able to install Lubuntu (nor Ubuntu) on that
machine (on my other 4 machines it works :)

Because when its a live cd than its definitely a bug, because it should not
even try to load fglrx as it is proprietary and needs to be installed with
 jockey-gtk.

Strange in deed!

Please also take a look into /var/log/Xorg.0.log and tell us whats in
 there.

Pieces of that:
(EE) failed to load module fglrx (module does not exist, 0)
(II) [KMS] drm report modesetting isn't supported
(EE) Radeon(0): Chipset: SUMO (ChipID=0x9641) requires KMS
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration
Fatal server error: no screens found.

You also need the output of that file if you want to report an error.

I'll take a look at the commands to send the log file to a flash drive and
send it here :) (Maybe I'll need some help with that...)

Oups sorry, I didn't remember you already did that :/

Well, it seems that modesetting is not supported for this card, but ISO
can't run without modestting :(
You could report a bug against xserver-xorg-video-ati package, there is
clearly something wrong with this situation.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] System won't boot in 11.10

2011-10-14 Thread Lance
My initial thoughts:

#1: When booting the live CD, just after selecting language, select Check disc
for defects. It takes several minutes to complete. If that shows no defects
found move to step #2:

#2: When rebooting the live CD select language and with Try Lubuntu w/o
installing highlighted press F6 which will display several optional boot
parameters. From there select nomodeset using the arrow keys, press enter to
apply (you'll know it's applied by an x next to it), then press Esc.

Now the nomodeset boot option will be applied when you boot. That's sometimes
helpful troubleshooting graphics card compatibility issues with the Xserver.
Let us know what happens,

Lance

Yeah, the first command (sudo start lxdm) says that lxdm is already running.
startx sends to me a lot of things, saying that X can't start, that
DKMS something or I don't know... the log is stored in somewhere but
since it's terminal i don't know how to extract that file.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] System won't boot in 11.10

2011-10-14 Thread Lance
I've never tried sudo start lxdm, but rather sudo service lxdm start. I've
actually meant to ask about the difference (if any) but I just never got around
to it :^/

I just thought trying the nomodeset option would at least rule out one thing,
since it helped advance things a bit I now wonder what issues the X11 updates
I've seen since release might actually apply to.

I'm toying with that borked power-manager icon thing ATM, but I'll try to parse
those X11 updates to see if they might address any bugs similar to this with
Radeon graphics.

BTW, I'm very impressed with Lubuntu final, great work by all :^)

As always, thanks to everyone for all they do,

Lance

[Lubuntu-desktop] System won't boot in 11.10

2011-10-13 Thread Jean-Pierre Vidal Piesset

I'm really sorry for starting the bad news.
I have a NP305V4A-S01 and in 11.04 it worked... now in 11.10 i can't
even see the Lubuntu (plymouth); the screen just turns off but it
seems that everything is still running.
I tried the same CD in other machines and everything works perfect (i
have to type sudo lxdm though).
The good news is that after that i tried to install Ubuntu and didn't
worked neither...

Any idea where I can post this bug?

The screen turns off after showing the menu try lubuntu, install lubuntu,
...
This problems affects at least the ISO (don't know if the installed system
behave like this since i can't install it).
The same disk works since i'm using it in another machine with the livecd :)
(tested in three machines total)
The Ubuntu disk behaves exactly the same way. Driver problem?
