There can be "issues" when running different DEs, like when I was messing
with LM a few years back their Cinnamon DE didn't seem to be too friendly
to others; but in linux theory it should be "problem free" . . . .

Back in the PPC days I ran Xubuntu with LXDE added . . . didn't seem to
cause problems . . . . Now I have multiple OSs, and instead of having
multiple DEs I have variations of DE in the different systems . . . Plasma
seems to be very popular these days, and Lu is I think borrowing from
Plasma to do what it does, could be going to Plasma DE should be compatible
with modern Lu . . . or I have XFCE as the driver for one of my Manjaro
installs . . . XFCE is pretty good . . . lots of services, etc. Cheap, etc.

Lubuntu Users:

I currently have Lubuntu 20.04 installed.  In that system, I
installed the LXDE desktop, which works fine.

Is it also possible to install the Gnome desktop in that system, and
use that (choosing which desktop at login time)?

I know it will use a fair amount of disk-space, but that isn't a
problem for me.

Try, Aere,

It will probably work, but I suggest that you try in a separate system
dedicated for this purpose. There might be some hiccups.

Best regards
Nio

Lubuntu Users:

I installed ubuntu-gnome-desktop on one of my music performance laptops,
and that seems to work fine.

If any of you want to try it, be sure to apply all updates before
installing it, to avoid problems that took a bit of skill to overcome.

I don't know if I'll be able to upgrade it when the next stable release
rolls-around, but that's less important on a music performance machine.

The good advantage I got, is that I can now tap-to-click on the
touchpad, and it shuts down quickly (without any of those 90 second
delays that often happen with Lubuntu).

When it boots, it still says it's Lubuntu, but that's not a problem.

That can change if you want to spend time in a terminal.  You can
actually make/install custom plymouth screens, as well if you like that
sort of thing.

Or entirely remove the splash for startup, to see the startup messages
instead. There are different ways to achieve this, either by
boot parameters or by not having a splash in the first place. Google is
your friend. All my Linux, including my Ubuntu install boot without a
splash, but I can't help with your install, since my installs are much
customized in the first place, e.g. by installing Ubuntu without even
X, before installing the environments I want, let alone e.g. my Arch
Linux install. Apart from this I'm using syslinux instead of grub2.
