[lustre-discuss] LUG 2020 Update

2020-04-03 Thread OpenSFS Administration
Dear Lustre community,

The OpenSFS Board of Directors and the Lustre User Group (LUG) 2020 Hosting
Committee wanted to release an update on the LUG’20 status with regards to the
rapidly evolving situation with COVID-19.

We want to acknowledge the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on
individuals, families, and communities all over the world. We appreciate that
many of you are dealing with unforeseen challenges and anxiety during this
alarming and uncertain time.

While we were very much looking forward to seeing you all in Berkeley,
California in June, we want to ensure that we provide a safe environment for us
all to meet, share, discuss, and evolve Lustre. Due to the rapid developments
and safety restrictions in place, we’ve decided to cancel LUG’20 in Berkeley.
We are exploring online-based options for keeping the community engaged, such
as a series of webinars that would span topics of interest that would normally
be covered at LUG. Please stay tuned as we review our options and gather
feedback from all of you.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions, concerns,
or feedback. We wish for you and your loved one’s health and urge you all to
stay safe.

Warm regards,
LUG’20 Hosting Committee and OpenSFS Board of Directors

[lustre-discuss] Lustre Trademark Transferred to OpenSFS and EOFS

2019-11-19 Thread OpenSFS Administration
Today Open Scalable File Systems (OpenSFS) and European Open File Systems
(EOFS) are pleased to announce another important step in ensuring that
Lustre remains open and free for everyone to use. Seagate has donated the
rights to the Lustre trademark to OpenSFS and EOFS, who will maintain it
under joint ownership.

"The Lustre community is grateful to Seagate for donating the Lustre
trademark. Their earlier generous contribution of lustre.org to the
community was a huge boon for users and administrators alike, allowing
OpenSFS and EOFS to refresh its content and keep it current. This latest
gift completes their generous asset transfer and puts the trademark into
hands that will put it to good use." said Stephen Simms, President of
OpenSFS.

"We are very pleased to have reached such an agreement with Seagate and are
excited that from now on the Lustre community represented by EOFS and
OpenSFS equally owns all the assets related to lustre.org as well as the
word LUSTRE and its design marks" said Hugo Falter, Executive Director of
EOFS and Frank Baetke, President and Chairman of the EOFS Administrative
Council.

[lustre-discuss] June 10th Deadline: Lustre Benchmark Submissions to IO500

2019-05-30 Thread OpenSFS Administration
OpenSFS encourages the Lustre community to submit benchmarks results to the
IO500 list. Deadline is June 10th, 2019. Please see below for details and
also a talk from Andreas Dilger on IO500 titled as “IO-500 - A Storage
Benchmark for HPC” presented at LUG2019:
https://conference.cacds.uh.edu/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/LUG2019-IO500-Dil
ger.pdf

Best Regards,

OpenSFS Administration

Call for Submission

Deadline: 10 June 2019 AoE

The IO500 is now accepting and encouraging submissions for the upcoming 4th
IO500 list to be revealed at ISC-HPC 2019 in Frankfurt, Germany. Once again,
we are also accepting submissions to the 10 node I/O challenge to encourage
submission of small scale results. The new ranked lists will be announced at
our ISC19 BoF [2]. We hope to see you, and your results, there.

The benchmark suite is designed to be easy to run and the community has
multiple active support channels to help with any questions. Please submit
and we look forward to seeing many of you at ISC 2019! Please note that
submissions of all size are welcome; the site has customizable sorting so it
is possible to submit on a small system and still get a very good per-client
score for example. Additionally, the list is about much more than just the
raw rank; all submissions help the community by collecting and publishing a
wider corpus of data. More details below.

Following the success of the Top500 in collecting and analyzing historical
trends in supercomputer technology and evolution, the IO500 was created in
2017, published its first list at SC17, and has grown exponentially since
then. The need for such an initiative has long been known within
High-Performance Computing; however, defining appropriate benchmarks had
long been challenging. Despite this challenge, the community, after long and
spirited discussion, finally reached consensus on a suite of benchmarks and
a metric for resolving the scores into a single ranking.

The multi-fold goals of the benchmark suite are as follows:

1.Maximizing simplicity in running the benchmark suite
2.Encouraging complexity in tuning for performance
3.Allowing submitters to highlight their “hero run” performance
numbers
4.Forcing submitters to simultaneously report performance for
challenging IO patterns.

Specifically, the benchmark suite includes a hero-run of both IOR and mdtest
configured however possible to maximize performance and establish an
upper-bound for performance. It also includes an IOR and mdtest run with
highly prescribed parameters in an attempt to determine a lower-bound.
Finally, it includes a namespace search as this has been determined to be a
highly sought-after feature in HPC storage systems that has historically not
been well-measured. Submitters are encouraged to share their tuning insights
for publication.

The goals of the community are also multi-fold:

1.Gather historical data for the sake of analysis and to aid
predictions of storage futures
2.Collect tuning information to share valuable performance
optimizations across the community
3.Encourage vendors and designers to optimize for workloads
beyond “hero runs”
4.Establish bounded expectations for users, procurers, and
administrators

10 Node I/O Challenge

At ISC, we will announce our second IO-500 award for the 10 Node Challenge.
This challenge is conducted using the regular IO-500 benchmark, however,
with the rule that exactly 10 computes nodes must be used to run the
benchmark (one exception is find, which may use 1 node). You may use any
shared storage with, e.g., any number of servers. When submitting for the
IO-500 list, you can opt-in for “Participate in the 10 compute node
challenge only”, then we won't include the results into the ranked list.
Other 10 compute node submission will be included in the full list and in
the ranked list. We will announce the result in a separate derived list and
in the full list but not on the ranked IO-500 list at <http://io500.org>
io500.org< <http://io500.org> http://io500.org>.

Birds-of-a-feather

Once again, we encourage you to submit [1], to join our community, and to
attend our BoF “The IO-500 and the Virtual Institute of I/O” at ISC 2019 [2]
where we will announce the fourth IO500 list and second 10 node challenge
list. The current list includes results from BeeGPFS, DataWarp, IME, Lustre,
Spectrum Scale, and WekaIO. We hope that the next list has even more.

We look forward to answering any questions or concerns you might have.

§ [1] <http://io500.org/submission> http://io500.org/submission
§ [2] The BoF schedule will be announced soon”

[lustre-discuss] OpenSFS Congratulates DDN on acquiring Intel's Lustre File System Capability

2018-06-26 Thread OpenSFS Administration
Hello OpenSFS community,

We're excited to congratulate DataDirect Networks (DDN), an OpenSFS

OpenSFS appreciates DDN's commitment to supporting the open source community
and continuing development moving forward according to the Lustre Community

DataDirect Networks's decision to integrate the Lustre team as an autonomous
division within DDN and to ensure full and sustained support of the customer
and partner ecosystem is a welcome step.

OpenSFS and DDN will host a webinar in the coming weeks that will discuss
the transfer in more detail and provide an opportunity for community
questions and feedback.

OpenSFS thanks Intel's High Performance Data Division for their Lustre
efforts and welcomes Intel's continued activity in the Lustre community
following the transfer, including participation in OpenSFS, EOFS, and
industry events.

Support for OpenSFS has continued growing over the past year as demonstrated
by increased OpenSFS membership. We encourage all Lustre users to join

[lustre-discuss] OpenSFS Requirements Gathering Process

2017-02-22 Thread OpenSFS Administration
Hello,

OpenSFS will be voting for new features and enhancements to be made for the
Lustre filesystem. These features and enhancements will be submitted to a
ticket tracking system via representation from each Member organization.
These requests will be collected and merged by the OpenSFS organization,
then Member organizations will be able to vote on these over a two-week
period. Each Member organization will have ten votes that will be used to
determine ranking of features and enhancements. Member organizations can
cast their votes on a single item or distribute them among the items as they
see fit. Once this list has been collected, the OpenSFS Board will organize
and evaluate the final list before submitting it to the OpenSFS Partners.
Partners will then provide feedback and have direct discussions with the
OpenSFS Board. The OpenSFS Board will then provide a summary of the Partner
feedback and thus allow action items to be created to act on the final list
of features and enhancements.

This system will provide a tangible benefit to Members as it will allow for
a collaborative list of features and enhancements, which would otherwise be
difficult to collect. With all Members informed on this submitted list, it
will be easier to gain community-wide traction on specific and needed
features and enhancements to Lustre. Direct Participant feedback will also
help improve and focus these submitted ideas to allow for achievable
success, benefiting the whole Lustre community.

OpenSFS Partners benefit from having the collected experience of Members
generating ideas for the future of Lustre, while still being able to provide
feedback and help steer the process. This will foster collaboration between
the Lustre community and its vendors, which will allow for a unified front
for ideas and suggestions. This will allow for a higher likelihood of
features and enhancements being accepted and included in future versions of
Lustre.

This email is being shared with the community as an overview of our plans
and process. Additional details and a specific call to action will be
provided in the coming weeks.

Sincerely,

OpenSFS Administration

[lustre-discuss] Top 5 Reasons You CAN'T Miss LUG 2016

2016-02-18 Thread OpenSFS Administration
<http://opensfs.org/events/lug-2016/>

LUSTRE USER GROUP 2016

Top 5 Reasons To Attend LUG 2016

On April 5-7th, OpenSFS is hosting the 14th annual Lustre(r) User Group (LUG)
conference<http://opensfs.org/events/lug-2016/> at the Hilton Portland and
Executive
Tower<http://www3.hilton.com/en/hotels/oregon/hilton-portland-and-executive-tower-PDXPHHH/index.html>
in Portland, Oregon! LUG 2016 will bring together industry leaders, end-users,
developers, and vendors to talk Lustre, contribute to the community, and move
the technology forward.

Here are the top 5 reasons why you should attend LUG 2016:

5 - Free Beer!

LUG wouldn't be LUG without free beer! One of the highlights of LUG is the
opportunity to catch up with old Lustre friends and make new Lustre friends.
It's even better with free beer from local Portland breweries. Join us on
Tuesday, April 6th for a networking reception with sweeping views of the
Portland skyline. And free beer.

4 - Network with Your Peers and Connect with Key Influencers

Meet and mingle with the people who "speak Lustre." LUG 2016 is your chance to
network, collaborate and share insight with developers, end-users, and other
members of the Lustre community over meals, during breaks, and at a special
evening reception.

3 - Stay Current on Feature Developments

Dynamic sessions from engineers working on features for upcoming community
releases of Lustre.

2 - Visit the City of Roses

The venue for LUG 2016 is the Hilton Portland and Executive
Tower<http://www3.hilton.com/en/hotels/oregon/hilton-portland-and-executive-tower-PDXPHHH/index.html>,
located in the heart of Downtown Portland. Take in all that Portland has to
offer, including a thriving food cart<http://www.foodcartsportland.com/maps/>
scene, over 60 craft breweries in the city
limits<http://www.travelportland.com/article/portland-breweries/>, and much
more<http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g52024-Activities-Portland_Oregon.html>!

1 - High Bandwidth, Low Latency Connections to Lustre Developers, Admins, and
Users

Prior attendees know that LUG is a firehouse of Lustre information. Get caught
up on what's going on with Lustre, talk with others about Lustre challenges you
are facing, understand how others are using Lustre, and what's coming down the
road.

Lustre Developer Day

Want more Lustre or a chance to talk specifically with Developers? Be sure to
arrive a day early for the Lustre Developer Day. Developers looking for a
focused opportunity to present their ideas, share current work, and learn from
others will want to attend our 2nd annual Lustre Developer Day on April 4th.
