Carbon 4 = 0.33mm = Gut Equivalent 0.39mm = Nylon 0.42mm
Carbon 5 = 0.37mm = Gut Equivalent 0.44mm = Nylon 0.46mm
Carbon 6 = 0.405mm = Gut Equivalent 0.48mm = Nylon 0.52mm
Carbon 7 = 0.436mm = Gut Equivalent 0.52mm = Nylon 0.56mm
Carbon 8 = 0.47mm = Gut Equivalent 0.55mm = Nylon 0.60mm
Carbon 10 = 0.52mm = Gut Equivalent 0.61mm = Nylon 0.66mm

Or something near enough for practical purposes. I believe the Carbon
numbers have something to do with the size (weight) of fish you're able to
catch, and they go up to at least 24. Presumably for whaling ... ;-)

[LUTE] Re: Tab Search - Kircher Tarantella

2007-06-18 Thread Arthur Ness
Dear Timo,

It is LINDA (Finnish union catlaogue of university
libraries) that is down for a week, or so.

Couldn't your friend in "L'Arepeggiata" find the other
pieces for you? Anyway, give that sunsite connection a
try (to LINDA).

Kircher also has some other plucked
instrument pieces in his Musurgia universalis (1650),
book I, p. 480ff.. They are ensemble pieces in mensural
notation by Lelio Colista for various combinations of
guitar, lutes, harps, theorbos.

There is a published facsimile of Musurgia, and it
should not be too difficult to find because it is such a
famous book. The pieces are written
in a rather "learned" style of polyphony.

If you have trouble with the on-line Finnish union
catalogue,
perhaps ask a local librarian for assistance. That's
what they're there for.

Dear Arthur,

Thanks a lot for the library info. I'll try to find the
pieces through sunsite when it's working again. I got
the music to the Antidotum from my friend who plays in
the group 'L'arpeggiata' who has recorded some of
Kircher's pieces in their CD 'Tarantella'

Kircher was really a remarkable and facinating man -
Kind of baroque era Leonardo.

All the best,
Timo

Dear Timo,

The library has the Kircher book but it is a microcard.
That's a now obsolete system of duplicating books. The
equipment doesn't work at the library here But you
might try the national union catlaogue in Finland. Go
Sunsite (link below), and then to Finland. The first
university on
the list has LINDA which is the national union catlaogue
of
Finnish university libraries. I couldn't search it
because it is "down" for a few days. But maybe you can
find the Kircher book when it's up and working.

http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/Libweb/

Thanks for posting the Antidotum. I'm certain Scott and
others will enjoy playing it. I wish I could be more
helpful with the Kircher book. There are two microtexts
for it, both are microcard published by the Sibley
Library at Eastman (1955) and
by ReadEx (1973).

There are quite a few old copies (1641) in U.S.
libaries. And I saw one for sale on Abe Books for
$8000. So you too can own it, if you've got the
cash.

Hi Arthur,

John's Question while ago made me to make a lute piece
out of Antidotum Tarantulae (renaissance tuning). Here
it is. On the second page is the melody with lute
accompaniment.

Would you by any chance have acces to the Kircher's
faximiles? I'd be very interested to have them.

Greetings from Finland,
Timo Peedu

Thanks to my favorite music reference librarian, I can
tell you that Kircher published not one but eight songs
used to cure tarantism ("antidotum tarantulae"). It's
in this work:

  Kircher, Athanasius, 1602-1680.
_Magnes, siue, De arte magnetica : opus
tripartitum :_
(Romae : Ex typographia Ludouici Grignani,
sumptibus Hermanni Scheus, 1641.) 916 pp.

I found no facsimile., but at least two published
microfiches, one from the Sibley Library at Eastman.
The pieces are in part iii, chapter 8. It shouldn't be
too difficult to make your own tablature. Many
libraries have the microfiche. Maybe Eastman will make
the pieces available in digital format.

[LUTE] Re: Dowland query

2007-06-18 Thread vance wood
I remember when I first ran into this piece digging through DD 211, a photo
copy back in the 70's. I remember my professor was amused by the piece
saying that it does not sound or have the form of any of the Battle
Galliards he was familiar with, and he was familiar with a lot.

I am not sure people have not misread the title. I am not sure this piece
is not more like a toy than a Battle Galliard. In the manuscript the title
is very blurred and smudged it could be read Round Kettle Galliard. I'll go
and hide now for dropping that bomb.

it's a recurring nighmare/fantasy of mine that i
stumble into a huntin'fishin'-type shop with only a
few pennies in my pocket, trying to replace a busted
string on my charango - my only means of support.

i don't know what sort of lute you have or if the
following has any relevance ... but in the treble
range of the charango (apropos fishing line) here are
the diameters listed:

E 0.4 mm 0.016 inch
A 0.6mm 0.024 inch
E 0.7 mm 0.028 inch
e 0.4 mm
C 0.5 mm 0.02 inch
G 0.7 mm

E 0.4mm
A 1st string of a guitar
E 2nd string of a guitar
e 0.4 mm
C 0.5mm
G 1st string of a guitar

Dear colleagues,
I have three carbon strings, at least I had three, marked No.6, No.8 and No,

Not so recent any more, but Andrea Damiani's article about it is at:

One suggestion I heard of is that both fundamental and and octave
strings are required for the 1st and 2nd courses.

Dear lutenists,

what might be the current opinion of the pieces "Per la Tiorba" in the
Libro Quinto of P.P. Melli? Just played them through by theorbo and by
archlute:
Both are problematic, but I think archlute has less problems!

Any recent research?
