[LUTE] Fronimo corrected and reworked Lute Intavbulations with better layouts -14
Hi, Here is the list of new lute intabulations, or corrected and reworked intabulations in Fronimo, with better layouts on IMSLP. I didnt know until these arrangements that Phalese' works sounds so great and I am wondering that there are almost so less or no recordings of his works. To the understanding of all: I do these transcriptions not only for voice and lute, but they also serve to understand the voice-leading, the melodic line and the frame(work) of the compositions. A must for all who are engaged in ( not only -Phalese -Theatrum Musicums) Lute-intabulations! It would seem our dear friendA Grant Tomlinson and his lovely wife Jan were caught in that monster avalanche in Nepal that has killed about 30 people. Grant has survived, but alas, Jan was not so fortunate. Grant is currently taking part in the recovery operation to help find Jan. I am utterly shocked by this news. I'm looking for the score of Oblivion Soave, and aria from Monteverdi's L'Incoronazione di Poppea. I'm sure my local library will have it, but the library is closed by now and tomorrow is a Sunday ... Anybody with a score and a scanner? Hi Martin, That's a nice essay on the instrument. Thanks for championing the doubled courses - and the doubled top course. (I have a doubled chanterelle on my bass lute and do appreciate it.) And it's a stunning lute! I was not able to play the Piccininni for some reason. I tried it in two browsers. best wishes, Sean On Oct 18, 2014, at 8:06 AM, Martin Shepherd wrote: Hi All, You can now see and hear more detail on this project, including some of the considerations which went into it, at: http://www.luteshop.co.uk/Liuto_Attiorbato.html Martin --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! [LUTE] Re: more on the liuto attiorbato
Martin- that is one sweet looking masterpiece; I would have killed for one (or paid you to build one!) back in 1999 when I was working on Piccinini a whole lot. Perfect symmetry! The historic survivors vary a bit in this regard, yours looks just like one of the better ones that I have seen. Not being able to get one was part of what prompted me to go for a Chambure vihuela copy when I became aware of that new find. I like how your playing smooths out on the Piccinini as you get further into the piece- I hope you can build one for yourself, so that your own playing comes up to your 6-course fluency. The double chanterelle is a feature that I have been struggling with (on the Vihuela) for years; first it took a long time to get the stringing to work- string material/diameter/tension/pitch level combo right, and then more time getting the touch right. But so worth it! At it's best, there is a wonderful concord unity with all the other double courses, but when out of sorts or practice it can really suck. I can see why there was such controversy about double vs. single for quite a while back in the day. I would conjecture that some modern approaches to the liuto attorbiato design with short but single diapasons are indeed taking advantage of wire overspun basses that have enough harmonic overtones to get away with no 8ve strings, but can still give a bit of the feel of that long, extended neck growl and twang so typical of archlutes theorbi. For the liuto attorbiato, I much prefer your solution- because it is not, after all, an archlute (much less a theorbo). Congrats, and I hope you build more! [LUTE] Re: more on the liuto attiorbato
Thank you again Martin for having built such a wonderful instrument for me. it was my request to have an instrument as close as possible to the disposition of the surviving models, because I was persuaded that by doing so, it could reveal unexpected solutions of unsolved musical and technical questions . For instance, the kind of dedillo described by Piccinini is so much more obvious with low tension, and works more efficiently with double chanterelle ! We were both conscious that it was a bit risky, but you went all the way for me, and you made the right decisions while building the lute. Yes, it works Le Samedi 18 octobre 2014 18h53, Dan Winheld dwinh...@lmi.net a ecrit : Martin- that is one sweet looking masterpiece; I would have killed for one (or paid you to build one!) back in 1999 when I was working on Piccinini a whole lot. [LUTE] Strings for heavier lute
List, I know, from my recent post, there are a minority of players on this list who either own heavier non-historical instruments or own and actually play them. I am in the latter group, with a 1977 Papazian. I have tried a variety of strings, and its the trebles that seem the toughest to get right. Too thick and they may snap, or be just impossible to tune (I'd be better with geared rollers I know), too thin and the instrument sounds thin and reedy. I suspect if I were to tune this beast in F it would solve a lot of problems, but am doing ensemble work mostly. That said, I have been discovering that low tension guitar strings work fine for the basses. E.g., a 4th string will serve as a 5th course nicely. I am going to try the same pattern: a 5th guitar string for the sixth course, and a sixth for the 7th and 8th fundamentals.A Currently I am using a KF 74 for the fourth which is surprisingly very good. I tried a guitar string 3rd, Carbon Fiber for the fifth course but it was awfully wimpy sounding. I was wondering if anyone else had ideas on this or has actually tried guitar strings as well and what the results were. I know the lutes vary widely, mine is 64 cm and I am keeping it tuned in G. Thanks. Charles -- To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
