[LUTE] Re: lute cases
Hey I need a lute case too (for a 10cs). Please be in touch. Alan On 7/16/06, Rob Dorsey [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Michal, I will make cases for lutes at $250US for a normal lute (non-theorbo). I'm doing one soon for a customer and will put up a picture when it's finished. I would need dimensions for the lute. [LUTE] Re: Short tunes, was Re: New Heringman CD
Thanks for recommending the Heringman CD. I also loved the web-site and bought some other tunes - LaPrimavera Early Renaissance Music and James Edwards Canarios. The Heringman CD will come in handy with some pieces I am learning. It seems that most suggested links on this lute list provide excellent resources for beginners like myself. Never ending. That brings up something I've wondered about - a lot of ren lute music seems to be very short. Did they just play lots of short pieces or was the practice to repeat a piece several times? Do the written scores represent themes which the player developed as he played? Mr. Heringman's new CD was recorded to accompany an English lute society booklet of easy pieces. A great idea which I am sure will be a great help to people who maybe have no teacher and can hear how a good player plays them. Most of the sources he uses are manuscripts that contains lessons that were designed for renaissance lute students. As such they represent as you say a theme that an experience player would expand. I personally always found CD's and especially concerts of Renaissance music with lots of small pieces and then a pause between each of them to be unsatisfatory. We do not know how renaissance musicians organised their performances in this respect, but I have a gut feeling that they would have made medleys such as the Byrd Virginal medleys or if they played a fantasia before a song, they would have not made a pause between it and the following song. The new CD from my renaissance ensemble Pantagruel takes this idea a step further, the complete CD is conceived as one long piece of music with eleven large blocks. [LUTE] Re: beginners tablature
Thanks eveybody for your suggestions. I'm still open to more, if anyone has any. Ron is correct, in fact I can neither walk nor run on my 10 cs. I am interested in any Renaissance music (7, 8, 10 cs etc... ) which is easy enough for me to play. I just finished a semester of school and I want to catch up on my lute practicing. I will go back to my teacher soon and receive a lesson and more music. Thanks again Alan -- To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
[LUTE] beginners tablature
can anyone make suggestions for beginners tab for 10 cs renaissance lute? Perhaps there are some .pdf's around of simple pieces. Most pieces which I've found through this list have been too difficult. I've been practicing Passamezzo Nachtanz - Munich ms. 1512. Any help would be appreciated. [LUTE] Re: Christmas lute song?
I have been learning Christmas pieces out of last November's (2004) LSA issue. There are over 20 Christmas songs in that issue. Its helpful for a lute novice like myself. I am not sure if these songs are helpful to anyone else. alan -- To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
[LUTE] Re: Now we are one, forever (New Boy Gets Lute, and a cherry tree dies)
Seems to me that you are getting wonderful advice on this list. You are very lucky to have picked up a used instrument. I had to by a brand new lute from the beginning, but I am very happy with the lute I bought. I only respond because I am a beginner on the lute. It is best if you hire a teacher. As I understand it, bad habits in lute playing are easy to acquire, but they are very difficult to un-learn. Good luck cartago delendum est alan -- To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html

Re: Question for a New Yorker about Pat O'Brien. Anyone know any NYC lute teachers?
Thanks everyone for the replies. Since yesterday I have contacted Mr. O'Brien and he is more than happy to help out a beginner. Sincerely, Alan To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
Question for a New Yorker about Pat O'Brien. Anyone know any NYC lute teachers?
Has anyone in NYC noticed an ad in the Village Voice about a Guitar, Ren. Lute, Baroque Lute teacher named P. O'Brien? If so, is it the same Patrick O'Brien who has played with such groups as the King's Noyse and the Baltimore Consort? If so, does anyone have his e-mail address? Otherwise does anyone know who the P. O'Brien in the ad is? See I am moving to New York City and I need a lute teacher. I don't know who to contact. I am a beginner with little musical background. I most likely need the service of an advanced student who offers private lessons. I know that Pat O'Brien is not such a person, but a professional. I assume he would know such a student who wants to teach a beginner. While I ask this list about P. O'Brien, I also wish to ask if anyone here can offer the name of a lute teacher who doesn't mind beginners. I will move to NYC in August and by then I will have studied for about three month on my 10cs lute. Any information will be highly appreciated and I will try to pay you back ten-fold for any leads. Re: Mistake on Weiss Naxos vol. 6
I also own vol. 2, 3, 4, 5, and I can't wait for 6. Mr. Barto, you are an excellent musician. I hope someday that I can play Weis on my own. I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy baroque lute until I picked up your recordings.
