I feel I must add a word of support for Julian Bream and his many
contributions to the current lute revival.
As a 20th-century pioneering concert artist, Julian Bream first
 and
foremost raised the lute from a quaint closet instrument, best
 suited
to historians and eccentrics, to an instrument capable of musical
expression that reached and communicated to modern audiences.
Yes, Julian Bream developed and employed his own characteristic
technique.   And yes, he used instruments that were modified from
historical models to suit his needs as a touring concert artist.

it was through his musical chops that he exposed a broad audience

the depth and the possibilities of old music for the lute.
Bream-bashing has been a popular sport among modern players who
 like to
dwell on what is now considered proper lute technique, but many

instance, I still see an absurd number of modern players (who

should know better) using thumb-under technique on baroque lute
 and
theorbo.   This is patently unhistorical.   In fact, it is well
 known
that music from circa 1600 onward should be played with the thumb
 out.
While the lute world is populated by an abundance of opinionated
hobbyists, Julian Bream is a real musician, and probably still
 has
chops most lute players will never attain.   Let's give the man
 the
respect he deserves.

   Back in the '70s, there was a quip that "Julian Bream makes

   lute), and quite a character off stage. In addition to "lute,"

   again at least in the US. These are very driven by a committed group of
   amateurs and enthusiasts, I think to an even greater degree than in the
   lute world currently. Where new compositions can fill a niche in those
   communities is often with easier pieces for students. Indeed you have
   composed sets of easy pieces for Ren lute and Roman has composed many
   works for baroque lute that are technically less demanding than Mouton
   or Weiss, are fantastic resources, and do open the ear of beginning
   players to music beyond the original composers.
   In any case, I applaud your commitment to the instrument, to
   encouraging the art of improvisation and to extending the sonic
   possibilities. FWIW, each of my 3 CD's has an original composition on
   it, one of which was a commission.

   Why is the lute world ruled by early music ?
   Why are 90 or 95% of the lutenists afraid to play new music for the
   lute ?
   Why did guitarists, recorder players, cellists, pianists , oud players
   etc. took the challenge to play today's music and the lute world almost
   - with a very few exeptions - doesn't ?
   Why are luteplayers afraid to play something different ?
   Why do lutenists think the lute must be played with a very specific
   approach ?
   Why are lots of lutenists looking down at lutenists who are trying to
   do something else with the instrument, with other techniques, new
   approaches?
   What is the future for the lute music if it stays to be that dogmatic ?
   I guess Dowland and all the other wonderful lutes composers would have
   a good laugh with the today's lute world approach to the instrument.

Two points.
1) Many people still don't seem to know what a lute is, nor do
 they
appreciate that the relatively delicate sound (even played into a
microphone) does not make the lute a poor substitute for a
 guitar.
2) In the video clip, Sting didn't appear to be inclined to even
mention that he was playing a lute.   He just played as though it
 didn't
need commentary.

   I did 3 Nick Drake Arrangements. It's perfectly possible to arrange a
   pop or folk repertorie for the lute.   Dylan, Cohen, Beatles, some Led
   Zeppelin songs,jazz compositions, could sound wonderful on the lute.
   The thing is who will play them ?   Seems so few dare to play something
   else than the repertoire we already know by so many lute performers.

   It has always been Isbin's intention to write original, melodic and
   accessible music. There are tempo indications, but they are not

   dissonances and consonants. Some of these compositions will be featured
