Dear Chris,

A belated 'thankyou' for your message below, and kind remarks -- which are much
appreciated!

I'm writing because we've [we being Severinus] just had an enquiry about
Telemann's two works (TWV39: 1 and 2) for two lutes, two partitas in Bb and G
minor. Do you know of any edition(s)?

Let's hope we can do something with Mulliner ere the year's out.

Best wishes, as always,

Ian

PS I don't know if you knew, but getting on for a fortnight ago, Leslie Hewitt
(of Severinus) passed away in the nursing home where he'd lived for 6 years,
and his funeral took place yesterday.

Dear Ian

Thanks for the fawcon, now flying at a slightly lower altitude, and authority
to deputise. I shall tell them you insist on the song being performed by a
troupe of scantily clad female ice dancers as the only truly authentic
interpretation.

I'm sorry to hear about you mum. I have an elderly aunt who, after bladder
infections and falls, has seemed to become very confused, even senile - but
when she is physically recovered, her mental acuity returns. Very strange, but
it means there's always hope.

I'll keep you posted.

best wishes

[BAROQUE-LUTE] At last! A book of easy lute pieces with accompanying CD/downloadable recording

2006-04-30 Thread Lutesoc

Dear all

The Lute Society, in conjunction with www.magnatune.com is pleased to
announced a significant development in modern lute
learning/teaching:
the first book of easy lute pieces with an accompanying recording [as far as
I know] since Tony Rooley’s ‘New Varietie of Lute Lessons’ of
over 30 years ago.

The recording is Jacob Heringman’s ‘Blame not my Lute’, and you can
download
it from www.magnatune.com, - which in case you didn’t
already know has a free, try-before you buy, live streaming option - and not
just samples, you can hear the whole thing before deciding.

Or you can buy an old-fangled CD from the Lute Society if you don’t want to /
can’t download.

The music on the recording is the whole of the book of ‘58 Very Easy
Pieces’, published several years ago. The repertoire consists of
popular Elizabethan tunes and grounds, as found in the Lodge, Dallis and
Ballet lute books, material from one of Le Roy’s tutor books (of
1568), and Italian dances from Caroso’s Il Ballarino (1581) and from a
manuscript now in Bavaria.

If you want a copy of the CD, or the book, or [hopefully!] both, just email
the Lute Society secretary, Chris Goodwin, for details:

best wishes

Lute Society Meeting this Saturday / other announcements

2004-01-12 Thread Lutesoc
Dear all

Don't forget! The next meeting of the Lute Society takes place this Saturday
17th January, at the Art Workers Guild, 6 Queen Square, Bloomsbury, London
WC1. Nearest tubes: Russell Square, Holborn.

The first meeting of the New Year will be a ‘semi-themed’ meeting on the
subject of instrument building, with sessions on the vihuela and on the cittern.
We hope to have on sale another new facsimile, of the Welde manuscript, and
the new CD ROM of the complete works on the seven Spanish vihuela composers in
facsimile - supposedly arriving by DHL from Spain today [Monday 12th]. We
welcome back Joachim Held for a recital of music from the Schele lute manuscript.

There is one late change: Jeni Melia, who was going to sing songs from her
new CD has a sore throat, so Kenneth Be [who was to have played in April] has
kindly stepped in and will perform lute solos from the Braye MS.

Here is the timetable:

11.00 Coffee

11.30 Forum on vihuela building, to mark the publication of a CD ROM of
all seven 16th century vihuela prints in facsimile. (At the time of going to
press, two luthiers have already offered short presentations—contributions
from the floor will be welcome.)

12.30 Mini recital, Gordon Ferries plays baroque guitar music, as heard on
his recent CD.

1.00Break for lunch

2.00LATE CHANGE: Mini-recital, Kenneth Be plays music from the Braye lute
book.

2.30Wood and wire, a talk on cittern building, by Peter Forrester

3.30Tea

from the Schele manuscript, with works by Joachim van den Hove, J.B. Besard,

Lute fraud warning, and concert notices.

2004-01-07 Thread Lutesoc
Dear all

1. REPEAT WARNING ABOUT FRAUD INVOLVING LUTES - PLEASE WARN EVERYONE YOU CAN=
=20
THINK OF ABOUT THIS.=20
=20
I have just had a message from a Lute Society member to the effect that=20
fraudsters are continuing to target people selling lutes - and other objects=
 of=20
high value - over the internet. This is the second time in a few months I ha=
ve=20
been contacted about this, and have circulated a warning.=20

Here is a typical message from a fraudster, and below that an explanation=20
from the police of how the scam works.=20

=20
 Hello,=20
I'm really interested in buying your 10c lute 63.5cm, by Bernd Holzgruben=20
as a gift for my Son. I'll be looking forward to sending me any available=20
picture of the item and also the last price you want to let it go for,so as=20=
to make=20
necessary arrangement for the payment. My method of payment is a certified=20
cashier's check that is drawn on a reputable U.K Bank.=20
I'll like to know cost of shipping to NIGERIA, and if you can't, i'll=20
handle it by contacting my shipping agent for the shipment arrangement. I'm=20=

And here is the police's explanation of the scam.

Added - Wednesday, 16 July 2003 8:32
Detectives in Avon and Somerset are warning people about a sinister new
 =C2=B3on-line=C2=B2 fraud.
People who offer their vehicles for sale on the Internet, are being targete=
d
 by the unscrupulous fraudsters.
 The =C2=B3potential buyers=C2=B2 =C2=AD usually located in another country=20=
=C2=AD contact the
sellers with a proposal to buy their vehicle after spotting adverts on the
 Internet.
The offer is usually coupled with an explanation that the buyer has a chequ=
e
due to his business from another source and that the cheque is in a larger
sum than the agreed cost of the vehicle. The seller is then asked if the
cheque can be made payable to them to cover the cost of the vehicle with a
further request that the difference is forwarded by the seller back to the
 buyer.
Det Con Andy Davis of Avon and Somerset Police=C2=B9s Fraud Squad said:=20=
=C2=B3We
believe the scam is being operated by West African crime teams. There have
been a number of approaches to people in the force area during the past few
 weeks.
=C2=B3It is known that cheques when sent to the sellers, are either stolen=20=
of
forged. Any difference between the price of the vehicle and the value of th=
e
cheque, if sent back to the buyer, will be a potential loss to the victim.=
=C2=B2
It is well known that these crime teams - who operate from all over the
world - regularly bombard e-mail users with requests for personal or compan=
y
bank details in order to transfer huge amounts of (fictitious) money, with
an offer of large financial rewards. Those who take up these invitations
inevitably end up losing considerable amounts of their own money.=20
It now seems that these same people have diversified and are now trying to
con vehicle sellers out of their money.
=C2=B3Our advice to anyone who is approached in this way is to immediately=20=
cancel
any dealings with the person concerned. There is no logical reason for
anyone wanting to pay for goods in this way and people selling vehicles are
advised to seek more regular and secure methods of payment such as a
 banker=C2=B9s draft,=C2=B2 said DC Davis.
