[LUTE] Re: How to put a strap on a lute?
Hello Halle, Straps have been discussed here before. I wrote that I simply got a roll of 3/4 inch fabric ribbon at a fabric store and use that (cut to length desired and tied on). I tie it to the peg box but fairly close to the nut. The farther from the nut, it seems to me the more leverage/strain would be put on the peg-box neck joint. Yes, the lute can be "slippery" like this. So far I've found that I can play simpler things holding it just with the strap, but for more complicated music need to support the instrument with my leg also. Some players, however, seem to manage fine standing and playing with the strap only for support. A matter of practice, perhaps? Hello Halle! Two pictures with Paul o'Dette: [1]http://tania.chagnot.free.fr/gallerie%20photos%202008%20FIGP/image/f estival%20international%20de%20guitare%20de%20paris%202008%20photo%20ja cques%20pasqueille%20Paul%20O'Dette%2009.jpg [2]http://tania.chagnot.free.fr/gallerie%20photos%202008%20FIGP/image/f estival%20international%20de%20guitare%20de%20paris%202008%20photo%20ja cques%20pasqueille%20Paul%20O'Dette%2007.jpg As you can see the strap is tied around the pegbox between the pegs. Paul also has some piece of not slippy fabric on his knee Hope this can help. Good luck! 2011/6/29 H <[3]pooklar...@yahoo.com> Hello everyone! I am new to Lutes, and new to the list. Most of the time, I just quietly sit and read and listen, but today I have a question: how to attach a strap to the lute? I have a new 8 course lute. It has a strap button on the end, but it isn't really obvious to me where the other end is tied. From looking at videos and pictures, it looks like the strap is tied off somehow on the peg box, but not near the nut. I'm confused. And the lute is a little more slippy to hold than I expected. Any advice welcomed! About me, there isn't much to say. I just really want to play the lute. It's the most magical sounding stringed instrument in the world to me, and I was over the moon to be able to get one for myself. I have wanted one for years. It would be nice to meet other lutenists locally, but I don't know if there are any. (I live in Columbus, Ohio.) I also do historical reenactment, so when I get brave enough to take my lute out to an event, I will probably meet other lutenists. But in the meantime, I really enjoy reading the posts on the list.
