[LUTE] Re: Johann Daniel Mylius
I have a film of the Berlin/Krakow copy and will let Chris borrow it. I'll call him later today (it's 6 a.m. here). All of the lute prints and manuscripts that were thought to have been lost during WW_II are in Krakow. (P.S. I see Joachim posted that information with the shelf-number.) The pre-war holdings are known because in the Deutsche Staatsbibliothek (the one on Unter den Linden) the pre-war card catalogue exists. During the war the holdings were taken out of Berlin for safe-keeping in Marburg, and to Fuerstenfeldbruch (or a name like that). The books in Marburg and were returned to Berlin in the 1960s (just a few weeks before I went there), but they hadn't been catalogued, so the librarians didn't know what they had. So I would go over into East Berlin (a fairly easy thing for a U.S. citizen), I'd get the call-numbers of things I was interested in, and I'd give them to the librarian in West Berlin, and they'd bring out what I ne! eded, if they had them. About a third was thought to have been destroyed (the books in Fuerstenfeldbruch). The returned items were in a museum out in Dahlem (a suburb), and every time I'd go there, I'd pass the head of Nefertiti(!), (In the old British Museum, I'd pass the Rosetta Stone going to the Music Room, where A. Hyatt King would answer the door.) Sorry. Back to business. I was unaware that there was a copy in Gdansk, Thomas. How did you learn about it? I'd like to know the name of the library and I'll add it to my list. There was a second volume titled "Continuation des Thesaurus Gratiarum" but I am not aware that any copy survived into modern times. That book is really filled with errors, and I think you have a hard road to haul trying to make sense of it. Isn't Francesco's No. 33 in there? Attributed to Diomedes Cato, or someone like that. I am unaware that John Robinson was working on Mylius. I think not. He is involved with the Thysius Lute Book facsimile sponsored by the Dutch Lute Society and the University at Leyden (I think). Oh, I'll ask Chris about the meaning of "catlines." Dear All, John Robinson is hard at work on a facsimile edition of the Mylius lute book - or is it the Thysius? I can never remember which is which - so it might be worth asking him about it: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Best wishes, Martin Thomas Schall wrote: >Hi Daniel, > >I'm not sure but I would assume this is the copy which is now in Gdansk. >BTW: Mylius is a great book of late renaissance music although full of >mistakes. Hi Daniel, I'm not sure but I would assume this is the copy which is now in Gdansk. BTW: Mylius is a great book of late renaissance music although full of mistakes. I'm working on an edition of it for years but this work doesn't seem to get ready ... Best wishes Thoms Am Sonntag, 11. Thomas: Pohlmann indicates that a copy is in the Deutsche Staatsbibliothek, Berlin. Is that an error? Hi, the only copy of Thesaurus Gratiarum I know of lies in Gdansk (Danzig) and he could get a copy from there. I have a copy but it's made from a film and hard to read (two pages of print for every single page of the original). Best wishes Thomas Am Samstag, 10.
