2013-03-11 Thread Dan Winheld
I'll do it for you in 15 - 20 minutes. Might take an hour to coach you
on doing it properly yourself. It's just a matter of repetition &
practice (like learning to play the lute or some such thing.) I am
nowhere near any part of London, somewhat west of that area- just about
20 miles from New Albion (Point Reyes, California- the first name
courtesy of Sir Francis Drake). If you can do double frets in nylon, I
don't understand why you can't do the same in gut? Nylon is a much
slipperier & more stubborn beast to handle. Double frets were the
standard for most lutes throughout it's first 350 or so years.

I just cannot do it... and never have been able to. I don't understand
the knot and I don't understand the method. I've got masking tape
plastered all over the place and the frets are still loose and buzzing.

Oddly I can do double frets with nylon but I don't want them on a
decent lute. A famed maker in North London quickly re-fretted my lute
in about 10 minutes a couple of years ago but he doesn't reply to
emails and obviously can't be bothered with such menial work. My lute
is currently unplayable.

Anyone know anyone who would do it?

2013-03-12 Thread William Samson
   Hi Stuart,

The Lute Society has a list of makers on its website, many of whom are
'happy to do remedial work on badly set-up lutes', which sounds like
   what's needed.

Reading through this list was a good memory jog for me, both in terms
of established luthiers and newer ones:
   [1]http://www.lutesociety.org/pages/makers

   Good luck in your quest!

   Best regards,

   Bill

PS I have sometimes put a little wooden wedge under loose frets at the
back of the neck, out of the way of my thumb. It's a temporary measure
but it can last a good long time.

PPS I have found that gut slackens in dry conditions (central heating
and so on) and tightens when humid. A wipe with a slightly damp cloth,
then leaving it for a while, can sometimes work wonders.

Still one opinion: I like and prefer the knot that David vE shows as the
2nd alternative in his page

  http://www.vanedwards.co.uk/fretknot.htm
I learned that knot from my old lute teacher Leif Karlson, student of
Michael Shaeffer.

Very strong and reliable knot! Perhaps that will work?

Stuart,

I once went nuts trying to do this - I couldn't figure out why the knot would
not hold, even though I was following the instructions faithfully.

Eventually it occurred to me that it could be due to my fret material. I was
using varnished/smooth string gut. I tried again after lightly sanding it to
roughen it, and the problem was solved.

I agree with Arto. Just one loop to tie and that's it - about as simple as you

I think we have to do an intervention. Everyone on the lute list meets
at Stuart's house with several miles of guts, a few dozen bare naked
lute necks, and several cases of strong IPA. Come Hell or high water,
his lute WILL GET FRETTED! And nobody leaves sober.

Dan- (fret gut, clippers, pliers & blowtorches packed & ready to go.)

There is a constant learning process during the tying of the first 3
frets which leads to a triumphant sailoresque mastery of knothood. Let's
open a beer to celebrate that. At the fifth fret I wasn't sure anymore
how the knot has to be, at the seventh I set the lute on fire while
trying to burn the gut from the wrong direction. It is also possible to
push up the loose frets to the next higher position in order to tighten
them and then saw off the unused part of the neck, I believe. I took up
the oud.

best wishes

I'm living proof that it leads to no such mastery.
