If I'm careful to apply moisturizer specifically to
the skin around my fingernails, I get almost no
hangnails.

Hi Collective Wisdom -

Thanks for all your suggestions about curing my thumb cracks! I tried some
moisturizer which helped, and the temperature going from -5 to 25 ( -20 to 4 C )
really helped too. I was surprised by how many people had ideas about this!

 Hi folks -

I am having serious issues with cracked skin on my thumb. about where it
contacts the string, because of the dry winter weather here in the north.
I am using band-aids to keep the crack closed, but the ones that I have tried
all are too slippery to get a good sound on the lute strings. Has anyone
found a good answer to this problem - either some bandage that works well
for plucking, or some other way to keep the skin from cracking?

[LUTE] Re: band-aid texture question

2015-01-30 Thread gary
One of the best moisturizers in the world is uric acid. Egyptian women
used to wrap their faces in towels soaked in cow's urine. They where
renowned in the ancient world for their beautiful complexions. There are
skin creams available that contain uric acid in crystalline form which
is derived from the urine of horses. The kidneys sterilize urine, so
there is no risk of infection. There is a more direct (and cheaper)
approach than skin creams.

Name withheld to avoid the insult to my reputation.

I would recommend seeing a competent dermatologist who could possibly prescribe
a medical product to eliminate the problem.

I've used newskin liquid bandage but don't like the sound I get with it. Fabric
bandages make a nice sound, not like real thumb flesh, but nice.

Also, next winter, try frequent moisturizing combined with filing off calluses
before they get thick enough to crack.

[LUTE] Re: band-aid texture question

2015-01-29 Thread Matthew Daillie
Hi Wayne
Here in Provence the winter can be pretty dry too, especially when the mistral
wind is blowing (although it's pouring with rain right now!).
I try to avoid aggressive detergents (some washing-up liquids, for example, can
really lead to callous skin). Drinking enough water is a priority.
When the skin on my right-hand fingers gets rough (as it inevitably does at
this time of year) I use a very light-grained emery paper to remove dead hard
skin and a silica based hand cream (which is not oily) followed by a sprinkling
of Venice talc. I couldn't imagine playing with any sort of band-aid. I presume
you already wear gloves to protect your hands outdoors.
Best
Matthew
