Math typesetting is intrinsically complex. Mathed has nothing to be

Bunk. The typesetting may be complex, but that is done by the computer
not by the user. The user does structured composition and editing.
Furthermore, the alleged complexity of something is NEVER an excuse for
a bad UI. Compare Blender (complex facilities, unusable UI) with Logic

By LaTeX, actually. And yes, it does a great job.

The user does structured composition and editing.

That's what I meant. In the case of LyX, doing it visually and
maintaining near-WYSIWYG (i.e., keeping up with LaTeX) is pretty complex.

Furthermore, the alleged complexity of something is NEVER an excuse for

Indeed. But would you call the mathed UI 'bad'? Come on! Compare with
Word's formula editor any day.

Furthermore, exporting the file to .tex and running:

However, pdflatex, will produce a .pdf-file that acroread doesn't choke on.

So, it seems this isn't a Lyx-specific thing, and I wonder if someone

Hmm.. I tried downloading the lates scrbook.cls etc, but I still have the
problem. Maybe it lies with ghostscript...

Could you perhaps try and convert the attached .dvi-file, and see if you
then get the error?

I'm thinking that if you do get the error (you have to do page down once
or twice in Acroread to produce it), then the problem lies
before ghostscript. Otherwise it's my ghostscript version.

I get this with standard book class too, but only if I use ps2pdf, not with

ps2pdf producing non-acrobat-conform pdf.

The solution to this UI problem is not clear :/

The simple solution is to let the empty paragraph inside a float
be of standard type, so users have to insert or change to
caption wherever they need it. More work, but no confusion.

It is hard to make this more user-friendly while retaining
flexibility. One could make the caption part of the
float parameters, with a toggle for putting it on top
or below. Simple user-friendly, but then I can't do fun stuff
like having the caption in the middle of the float (with text/graphichs) both
above and below, or have two captions in a single float. The latter makes
sense - I get two figures that _will_ be printed together at all cost.

A float cold be created with two initial paragraphs though - an empty
standard paragraph _and_ a caption below it. Those who want the caption
on top can simply move the cursor down and the std. paragraph will dis-
appear. And putting a border around the caption (like the border
around a tex box or the float itself) might make things clearer
by showing the boundary of the caption paragraph. It is usually
not that many lines anyway.

baffled as to how to get a caption. See lyx-users ad passim.

Eh, one guy I know who is into hardware said it this way: you can
never be sure that it will come on again...

One service you do run is updatedb, by the way. And the cleanup
scripts. But if you run anacron it should take care of itself.

I have the same experience as Lars. This machine (at home) makes a
heck of a noise, and it varies, making 'sick' noises now and then for
hours in a row. I suspect the cooling fan bearings are dirty or worn
-- this is an old, old box bought second hand. AST, not a good brand
either.

But I have no problem with the sound and happily sleep beside it if I
have to, when we have guests. My wife cannot. I suppose it's a bit
like with dogs: some people love them, some can't stand them -- and
those are the ones that get allergic, or bitten :-)

more thoughts on including documents

2003-01-18 Thread Dr. Richard E. Hawkins
I'm partially thinking out loud here, so bear with me as I say stupid
things :)

As I'm understanding them right now, all forms of include and insert
actually make the other document part of the current document. What
would be really useful in many circumstances (such as what I'm working
in right now) would be the ability to include the output of the other
file, rather than it's contents.

For example, I want Appenix C to be the syllabus for my class. To make
the final document, I'm going to have to break apart my document into
the main body and the separator pages for the appendices, making a
postscript file for each (with gv save as, I suppose). and then use
psmerge to put syllabii and such into the single output file.

It would be useful to have something like an include that would cause
the processing of the document to stop, the output of the included
document inserted, and then processing of the original document again.
But as I think this over, this would stil have the tex problem of having
multiple titles and the like.

OK, so maybe this is really a tex problem, and not a lyx one; I'm not
sure. But it would be such a useful thing to be possible, that I
thought I'd toss it out.

lyx crash and libc

2003-01-18 Thread Nirmal Govind
Hi.. I updated and compiled the cvs version today and lyx still crashes
on startup.. looks like some incompatibility with libc.. I'm running
Debian on a powerpc based machine... below is the backtrace from the
crash.. I had the same problem when I tried earlier a month or so back..

Please let me know if some particular libc version is best suited for
lyx..

Thanks,
nirmal

Bunk. The typesetting may be complex, but that is done by the computer
not by the user. The user does structured composition and editing.
Furthermore, the alleged complexity of something is NEVER an excuse for
a bad UI. Compare Blender (complex facilities, unusable UI) with Logic
Audio (complex facilities, usable-as-hell in comparison).

By LaTeX, actually. And yes, it does a great job.

That's what I meant. In the case of LyX, doing it visually and
maintaining near-WYSIWYG (i.e., keeping up with LaTeX) is pretty complex.

Just wanted to say that this problem also occurs when opening the
.pdf-file with the windows version of Acroread.

Furthermore, exporting the file to .tex and running:
latex example.tex; dvipdf example.dvi; acroread example.pdf
produces the same problems.

However, pdflatex, will produce a .pdf-file that acroread doesn't choke on.

So, it seems this isn't a Lyx-specific thing, and I wonder if someone
can tell me where this problem should be reported?

Oh.. and here's a _very_ short example .tex-file that produce the

short_ex.tex:

I get this with standard book class too, but only if I use ps2pdf, not with
pdflatex (I don't have dvipdfm); so it's not a koma problem, but more likely
ps2pdf producing non-acrobat-conform pdf.

The simple solution is to let the empty paragraph inside a float
be of "standard" type, so users have to insert or change to
caption wherever they need it. More work, but no confusion.

It is hard to make this more user-friendly while retaining
flexibility. One could make the caption part of the
float parameters, with a toggle for putting it on top
or below. Simple & user-friendly, but then I can't do fun stuff
like having the caption in the middle of the float (with text/graphichs) both
above and below, or have two captions in a single float.

I have the same problem. Install dvipdfm, reconfigure,
and use the dvipdfm option for making pdf. It works.

pdflatex also makes fine pdf, and faster. But it don't
like xfig external insets.

Actually more work, more confusion. Users upgrading from 1.1.6 were
baffled as to how to get a caption. See lyx-users ad passim.

Eh, one guy I know who is into hardware said it this way: "you can
never be sure that it will come on again... "

To make
the final document, I'm going to have to break apart my document into
the main body and the separator pages for the appendices, making a
postscript file for each (with gv "save as", I suppose). and then use
psmerge to put syllabii and such into the single output file.

It would be useful to have something like an include that would cause
the processing of the document to stop, the output of the "included"
document inserted, and then processing of the original document again.
But as I think this over, this would stil have the tex problem of having
multiple titles and the like.

OK, so maybe this is really a tex problem, and not a lyx one; I'm not
sure. But it would be such a useful thing to be possible, that I
thought I'd toss it out.

This is a PITA. We should try to use the lib we find in $QTDIR/lib, but
we have no way of telling g++ which one to find :(

Doing what you suggest only fixes a certain case of it, we could still

lyx crash and libc

2003-01-18 Thread Nirmal Govind
Hi.. I updated and compiled the cvs version today and lyx still crashes
on startup.. looks like some incompatibility with libc.. I'm running
Debian on a powerpc based machine... below is the backtrace from the
crash.. I had the same problem when I tried earlier a month or so back..

Please let me know if some particular libc version is best suited for
lyx..

Thanks,
nirmal

Since Miyata knows much better on the subject than I do, I rahter let him
send a patch to the xforms mailing. In fact, All I know is that the patch
works for CJK-LyX and I cannot even make a persuasive argument why the patch
works. I sincerely hope Miyata can find the time to do the work.
