Since the poster also wanted a different executable name: use the
wrapper

#! /bin/sh
exec /usr/local/bin/lyx ${1+"$@"}

and call it, say, lyx-devel.

You can use the current spec file to install with a different
prefix.

To install to a different prefix than /usr, use:

rpm -ivh --prefix /usr/local lyx-1.1.6cvs-1.i386.rpm

You might have to use --force as well.

I tested this and it works.

Just use a prefix like /usr/local/devel or any other unique directory
not normally on your path.

How about:
devcompile
#! /bin/sh
./configure --with-lyxname="lyx-devel"
make
strip src/lyx
su
cp /usr/local/bin/lyx /usr/local/bin/lyx-stable
make install
cp /usr/local/bin/lyx /usr/local/bin/lyx-devel
mv /usr/local/bin/lyx-stable /usr/local/bin/lyx

Something like that is supposed to exist right now, but does not work
yet (!). However, you can execute the stuff in lyx-devel wiithout
installing... except that you don't get i18n working :(

Changing spec file for lyx-1.1.5 and lyx-devel

2000-06-19 Thread Emmanuel GUREGHIAN

would it be possible to change the spec file for the lyx-devel cvs tree
to make it
install in /usr/local the files and give the lyx executable another name
(such as lyx-devel).
This would allow us to have both version installed on one system without
conflicting.
