Probably for historical reasons, that we did not revisit before. :-)

Initially there was not any desktop file in the lyx sources and so we had to 
carry one in the srpm.

Digging a little bit more I found that the lyx.desktop was introduced to lyx 
in 2011:
http://www.lyx.org/trac/changeset/40386/lyxsvn

I will poke Rex in bugzilla about this.

The change was just made on March 17 of 2015. It is in LyX 2.1.4 and
will be in every later version. For details, see:

I think we already do this. Here is our current lyx.desktop.in file:

The keywords line is:
Keywords=WYSIWYG;WYSIWYM;TeX;LaTeX;GUI;frontend;editor;
