This tends to happened when some robot is crawling, I think. We should take a 
serious look at the http log at these times if we want to understand what is 
going on.

It was working fine 5 minutes ago but it has not been working the last 5
minutes for me. I normally wait a few hours before sending this email,
but I've learned that it's good to send it early in case someone sees it
before signing off for the night.

This round of problems seems to be caused by something else. There are
now only 500MB RAM, but we used to have 1.5GB RAM. We are not almost
continually in a swapping storm.

I'll contact the server admins and see if they can shed som light on
this.

Me too.

The git server is available, but sooo slow.

We had been having this problem intermittently, but now it is becoming 
constant. The issue is that httpd for some reason spawns a bazillion 
processes, and we are basically out of memory. Each one only consumes a 
few megs, but a bazillion times a few is too much.


Lars suspected some issue with trac, but it's very hard to tell what's 
going on.


I can restart httpd again, but I'm not sure it will help. For long.

the ftp servers are not under our control.
even more, most of linux installs will never touch our servers
at all and will go through distros path.
for both mac and win there are sites indepently offering
lyx binaries... and last, we have mirrors...

the only thing which could be measured is change of www.lyx.org
visitors through logs.

i think the basic problem is that we didn't find any active
server maintainer and every task on server is long pestering
of JMarc.

Additionally, I've added the new releases (2.0 and 1.6.10) to some software 
sites today (kde-look.org, qt-apps.org, freshmeat). This might increase the 
traffic a bit.

The work to prepare for the move of the LyX machines continues.

This will be the last down time before that actual move.

timetable:

- now: machines down for a couple of hours max.
- 3. april: machines down when moving, name servers
need to sync up after that. In some places the
pervceived downtime can be up to two days. (real
downtime is more likely to be a couple of hours.)
