Since I installed the compiled version of Lyx-1.3.3. it should not depend on
the gcc++ version I use actually.
Anyhow, I use, in fact, the recent release of the compiler, gcc 3.3.1-16. I
upgraded already.
That should have done it, even if the version of the compiler is responsible
on how the installed program works :-((
What about the developers? The shown error looks like an not so difficult to
fix one - or at least to understand it. I am not a developer.
By the way: It is the only fault, I found.
I think, we should give somebody else a try whether it works or not.

To center all figures in a document, Herbert has previously suggested
using in the preamble;

\makeatletter
\renewenvironment{figure}[1][]{%

\centering
  }{%

  }
\makeatother
(http://www.educat.hu-berlin.de/~voss/LaTeX/floats/floats.phtml#center)

However, I have not been able to get it to work successfully - the
figures do not move at all. What could I be doing wrong?

Carefully get your cursor _outside_ of the table or figure
(inside the float and just right of the table/float) and then
select Layout/Paragraph and set alignment of the paragraph of
Center.

There's no need to shout.

Centre the paragraph it is in (Layout->Paragraph)
this is the wrong way, gives too much vertical space before
the caption!
write as first line inside the float in ERT (CTRL -L)
\centering

John,

You are perhaps too familiar with it. I can see how a new user would have
problems understanding. The exact procedure I use is:

1. Insert > Floats > Figure.

2. With the cursor at "Figure#" press Enter. The cursor is now inside the
red outline of the float, on the line above "Figure#".

3. Layout > Paragraph and select Center in the Alignment box. Press OK.

4. Insert > Graphics.

Even if I only know the answer to the second part of your second

Just type it directly in...

You may need to set up a compose key in X (search the net for how: you
may need to assign a key to mean "Compose" by using xmodmap)

  Shhh! Don't yell. :-)

In the float, place the cursor in front of the image or table and on the
menu select Layout -> Paragraph. Change the alignment from Justified to
Center.

I asked this question a few weeks ago and learned that while the default
behavior in LyX used to be centered figures, that was not in accordance with
the LaTeX standard. So, now we do it manually.
