The command ln -s a b run from Cygwin simply creates Windows shortcut. But LyX run from Cygwin won't recognize the shortcut as a link... obviously it ignores Cygwin altogether. I just tried Cygwin's version of ln and had the same experience you did. If you use Windows Explorer to look at the directory where you created the symbolic link, you see a Windows link icon. You're right, LyX won't follow a Windows link (.lnk). You mentioned MinSYS being required for LyX 1.3.6. What does it mean? Actually, MinSYS is not exactly required -- what's required is sh.exe, and MinSYS is (I think) the way the LyX 1.3.6 installer suggests getting it (if it doesn't find sh.exe already installed, as for instance it would if you had Cygwin on the system). Does it mean that LyX will understand shortcuts in Windows? Not in the sense of interpreting .lnk files, but if you use the ln.exe that comes with MinSYS, what Windows Explorer shows you is not a .lnk icon but a folder icon. Prior to Win 2000 (I think), the Windows file system had no real symbolic link capability at all resembling what Unix has. I'm not sure if it was a consequence of switching to the NTFS file system, but Win XP (and I think Win 2K) have the ability to create actual symbolic links now. The catch, if I recall correctly, is that the command line application to do so does not install automatically but comes from a toolkit CD (which may cost extra -- again, not sure). I suspect that the version of ln that comes with MinSYS has been compiled to use the Win XP/Win 2K API calls to create symbolic links. I don't know if this will work on a FAT drive; it may well be restricted to NTFS partitions. I'm going to try to install MinSYS now. If you're installing on the same machine that has Cygwin (and not uninstalling Cygwin), be sure to use the full path to ln so that you get the MinSYS version of it. Follow up here if it still doesn't work. Paul

I was thinking, suppose one is writing a tutorial on regular expressions using LyX. Then one decides to convert the file to html for a webpage. Since scripts are often copied and pasted from webpages, I thought it would make a difference whether the source document used or '' one alt-34 character vs. two alt-39 characters, which display the same looking character but function differently in how the regex would work, as ' and do not work exactly the same in all script/shells for enclosures. Paul

Using the soul package and this command means I no longer have to individually deal with LyX's problem in hyphenating underlined words. Perhaps this could be added as a check-box option (like "use AMS Math") to the packages tab in the Document menu under Layout -- unless in the new version it already has been. By default, Qt has some compatibility code between its own strings (QString) and C++ standard strings (std::string). Some linux distributions chose to disable this code (which is not a bad idea), and this produces compilation errors. We now build LyX without the compatibility code enabled, so that the problem should not happen again. JMarc

footnotes in table not appearing
Hi all, Just as the end of the tunnel finally is in sight, one more (last?) little problem has got me stuck. I've got two small tables that contain footnote references. The correct reference numbers appear in the dvi output, but the footnotes themselves (and numbers) at the bottom of the page are omitted. If the table contains a reference to footnote 92, at the bottom of the page you might see: 91 - a footnote 93 - another footnote Any suggestions on what might be wrong or a workaround? The long list of solutions seemed rather dire, but in the middle there was this very simple suggestion: "Use tabularx or longtable from the LaTeX tools distribution; they're noticeably less efficient than the standard tabular environment, but they do allow footnotes." "longtable" sounded familiar to my LyX-ears. And it worked when I checked "Use long table" in LyX's Tabular menu. -- Kevin Pfeiffer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Tiros-Translations
Help!- Windows/Linux .lyx file compatability
Hi there, I've been working on linux and have started using another computer which uses windows. So I have downloaded the latest versions of the packages (as of 6 sept 2005) and I'm using: Lyx 1.3.6-1 for windows OS=Win 200 Pro Packages downloaded were: ActivePerl 5.8.7.813 Python 2.4.1 ImageMagick6.2.4 Q16 MSYS MikTEX Aspell 0.50-3 Ghostscript 8.51 Anyway the issue is that my math won't display properly. That is, the math that I write is correct in terms of its latex content, but is displayed in lyx's editor wrongly. For example the command \prod will produce a nicely typeset "big pi" for the product symbol, yet when displayed in lyx it appears as "Q". I have checked for ams packages and they seem to be there. If you know how to fix this, could you send an email to me ([EMAIL PROTECTED])? Thanks, Rik

I imagine you output looks fine and this is a problem with display only. Have you installed the Maths fonts (Bakoma)? These help Lyx display math properly. How to change size of math screen fonts?
Hi. I'm using LyX 1.3.6 on Fedora 4. Is to possible to change the size of math screen fonts? If I go to Edit -> Preferences -> Screen fonts I only get something changing the Zoom %. Changing the Screen DPI has no effect. Moreover, it only changes the text fonts, leaving the math fonts always with the same size. -- Rudi Gaelzer Departament of Physics Physics and Mathematics Institute Federal University of Pelotas Caixa Postal 354 - Campus UFPel 96010-900 Pelotas - RS BRAZIL Phone: +55-53-275-7468 FAX: +55-53-275-7343 Registered Linux user # 153741

I believe MinSYS is mandatory for LyX 1.3.6 and later on Windows. From MinSYS's interactive shell, you create the link pretty much as you would on Linux, other than to remember that the C: drive is /c in MinSYS. So, for instance, you would use ln -s /c/papers/bibliography ./ref on her machine. Alternatively, you can do the same thing from a DOS command prompt, by providing the path to ln if necessary, for instance "C:\Program Files\msys\1.0\bin\ln.exe" -s /c/papers/bibliography ./ref (assuming the default installation location). I've tried it here (Win XP) and it seems to work as expected. Paul Paul, thanks a lot you for the tip. I happened to have Cygwin installed one my machine, so I gave it a try. No. We use MinSYS only to run various shell scripts. Some people have reported success using Cygwin's shell environment instead, but I haven't been there so I'm just reporting heresay. LyX itself is a purely Windows app on Windows, albeit one with relatively limited Windows functionality. confusion: interword spacing vs. unbreakble space
Hello all, I'm very confused about how to properly create an interword space. In LaTeX the standard way is to use "\ " for an interword space and \@ for the end-of-sentence spacing after punctuation. I was used to typing bla, e.g.\ bla to get the proper spacing (i.e. interword spacing). However in the LyX manual, the recommended way to do this is to use the protected space, i.e. ~. But this is not really the same thing, is it? If understand correctly "e.g.~bla" won't get broken at the end of a line as it should, right? Could somebody, please, explain how to do this correctly? Thank you, David
