Comment on Lyx Windows Install: the "textclasses not found" problem
Hi Folks, Just installed Lyx yesterday on Windows, and, since I had a bit of trouble getting it to run, I thought I would post a quick report of what got it working. I installed using the "network bundle" at first, but constantly got a problem with Lyx refusing to start: the now quite famous "textclasses not found" problem. More precisely, the programs refuses to start and prints this as the error: LyXTextClassList::Read: no textclasses found! This was obviously something to do with the Tex installation: although I installed MikTex as part of the bundle, Lyx was somehow not finding it. As it started, it tried to download missing textclasses but then bombed out with an error. However, after reading an earlier comment on the Lyx list, I found that installing MikText separately seemed to do the trick. So, this means: -- Install MikTex (from the site, www.miktex.org). I used the "basic" version. -- Install Lyx Run Lyx: works fine. Hope this helps someone to get started with the tool in Windows. (Note: some other posters have suggested running the "configure.py" script located in the Lyx directory, under the subdirectory "Resources". This did NOT work for me: the configure script tried to load the (what it thought were) missing Tex classes and crashed whilst doing so with the above message.) Oh, I'm using Win XP with SP 2, and running Lyx 1.4.3-5. After some playing around trying to answer Paul's and Georg's questions, I came up with these conclusions: My ghostview prints everything correctly - the eps's by themselves, the lyx ps and pdf (dvipdfm and pdftex) outputs. Acrobat Reader (both versions 7.0.9 and 8) fail to print the figures correctly. Does Adobe not understand lyx pdf's the way ghostview does? I don't know who to blame, Adobe or the lyx conversions of eps to pdf, but I suspect the latter. It is a problem since the most wide-spread pdf viewer on windows is Acrobat, and if I give the document to someone I would like for them to be able to print it correctly. How can we be sure? In LyX or in the generated TeX?
If you looked at the generated TeX this is intended. In LyX it should look
like a real Ÿ. If it does not, did you open both files in the same LyX
instance?

Not if you want the Ÿ to become a real unicode Ÿ if you open the file with
LyX 1.5.
I attach a second file for copying. Note that I see the second capital Ÿ as
¾ on screen. I don't know if that is a LyX bug or a font problem, but the

I guess the cause was the pdf2ps driver inside this release of Acrobat, because running externally the local pdf2ps script worked, as well as using Acrobat 5. An update of Acrobat Reader solved this, but I must say thet I stopped using it (or go back to Acroread5 for slides) because it take 2mn to load and happens to get stalled and eat all my cpu resources. I deinstalled lyx and miktex, then installed miktex (c:\MiKTeX25) from the miktex-website (basic), then lyx (c:\Lyx14) (not the bundle and in a second try after deinstallation: miktex and the lyx-bundle). We never found out whether that was a problem of ghostscript producing invalid pdf, or a problem of acroread not understanding the valid pdf that ghostscript produced. The solution was to upgrade ghostscript (IIRC the problematic version was 5.x or maybe 6.x). I suspect that in your case you see something similar. Either the conversion of the figure from eps to pdf (if you use pdflatex), or the conversion of the whole document from ps to pdf (if you use latex) produces something acroread can not understand. What version of ghostscript do you use? If it is older, does an upgrade help? Georg

I tried other viewers - foxit on windows and kpdf (xpdf variant of KDE) on linux, and they both failed to print the file correctly, even when the file is made on a lyx 1.4.2 on Linux. Does that mean that the file itself (or the eps figures of Origin) is somehow non-standard, and only ghostview for some reason is able to handle it? Too many things changed since my wife successfully printed her thesis on lyx 1.4.1 on Windows, with MikTex 2.4. We still have her original pdf, and it DOES NOT print the Origin figures correctly now, but it did before. I am really confused. Things seem to contradict. If anyone has anything other than sympathy, please share. I really need to get this fixed. Miki

I have on Windows Ghostscript 8.54 and ghostview 4.8. They came with the lyx 1.4.3-5 bundle. The problem is that the example file is in latin9 encoding, so I really should see Ÿ (and I do see that in 1.5 with the same font settings, and in the ps output of 1.4). 1.4 displays ¾, and that is simply wrong. I followed the steps indicated under :

I installed / reconfigured LyX
and can open my article in the new ACM class; fine.
The problem I encounter is when I include citations.
I run into errors; here is an example of the error messages I get
for each citation :

If you say, e.g., `\def\a1{...}', then you must always

I had no such problem when using the plain article class.
Any idea what the above means?
I am running LyX 1.3.7 under Ubuntu.

I'd have to disagree.Unfortunately LyX is still behind the curve in the area of big project management (books, manuals, etc). But it is close to perfect, I think, for any document from 0 pages to chapter-length as long as complex layouts are not required (i.e. multicolumnns with pictures and tables, etc.). Framemaker is still way ahead (from the writer's perspective---FM's typography is not so great).Too bad they killed it for Mac and never really marketed it for Linux. Besides, Framemaker may even die soon, given Adobe's massive investment in InDesign, and its format is not really open. But LyX is getting better, and version 1.5 looks very promising on the long document front. Without beeing aware of this my installer calls LyX's configure script while the installer is running - this run mostly fails for the explained reason but reads out the environment variables so they are then refreshed (that's the run after my installer informs you that the following configuration may need some time). When LyX is first started the configure script runs again and this time it finds MiKTeX and so you don't get the error and LyX is successfully configured. This one was very tricky to find it out, I needed 3 months and lots and lots of installation tests to have the right idea :-(. (Note: some other posters have suggested running the "configure.py" script located in the Lyx directory, under the subdirectory "Resources". This did NOT work for me: the configure script tried to load the (what it thought were) missing Tex classes and crashed whilst doing so with the above message.) This is known MiKTeX bug we are working on. Workaround: Turn on an internet connection and then reconfigure LyX. regards Uwe

updating the latex distro using cygwin
Hi, I tried to install lyx on my pc (which is running windows xp sp2) but I didn't succeed for the notorious "no textclasses found" problem. I then tried to install it using cygwin and everything went fine. I have now another problem: I need to use the IEEEtrans.cls for producing the output of my file but it is not available in the standard distribution. In Windows I could run the miktek update manager (which has a very nice GUI) and download the missing package. How can I do the same thing in cygwin? I simply need to "add" the IEEEtrans.cls to my latex distro that is under cygwin but I have no idea how to do that. Can anyone help? I would really appreciate it. Thanks and regards Francesco

Using a cygwin shell create the following directories ($ is the shell prompt): $ mkdir -p /usr/local/share/texmf/tex/latex/ieeetran $ mkdir -p /usr/local/share/texmf/bibtex/bst/ieeetran Download IEEEtran.cls, IEEEtran.bst, and IEEEtranS.bst from http://tug.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/IEEEtran/ Put IEEEtran.cls into /usr/local/share/texmf/tex/latex/ieeetran/ Put the .bst files into /usr/local/share/texmf/bibtex/bst/ieeetran/ Run texhash: $ texhash Test if it worked: $ kpsewhich IEEEtran.cls /usr/local/share/texmf/tex/latex/ieeetran/IEEEtran.cls However, note that you can also use miktex, so you could uninstall the cygwin tetex and install it in its place (remember to reconfigure lyx through Tools->Reconfigure if you do so).
