One way to check would be to see if you can "compile" a regular latex

Apparently the error occurs when using the babel package:

But if I try to use a command from farsi, such as \alefhamza, I get a
babel error: (even if I don't use babel, which is odd:)

If I add

I get
LaTeX Error: Encoding scheme `LAE' unknown.
But apparently the solution is to modify the options for fontenc and
babel as follows:
\usepackage[LFE,LAE,OT1]{fontenc}
\usepackage[farsi,english]{babel}
So LyX should generate these instead of the default
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage{babel}
Uwe, I believe you worked on this at some point? I may have thwarted
your efforts then...? Do you know what the current situation is?
Nevertheless, LaTeX does give some warnings:
"LaTeX Font Warning: Encoding `LFE' has changed to `OT1' for symbol font.
Furthermore, I spoke too soon when I said that just typing worked
fine. When I switch languages, it does seem to correctly switch the
script, except for punctuation symbols. Only latin letters and digits
seem to be correctly rendered, but the rest of the keyboard seems
"stuck" with the other keyboard map. Only when I switch off keybord
maps do I get the correct symbols.
Hmm, this is strange. What have you set your primary and secondary
keymaps to? What is your default language (Tools -> Preferences ->
Language settings -> Language) and what is the document language
(Document -> Settings... -> Language)? Which language seems to be
working correctly, and which does not? Can you give an exact recipe for
reproducing (e.g.: open a new document, set language to , type
"abc"...)?
It's working for me (with a few slight variations on your setup and
recipe -- see below --- perhaps those will help).
Primary: american
Try switching this (primary) to "null" --- I think that means that your
default language will be used.
Secondary: farsi
Default language: English
Things seem to go awry when the language is switched, regardless of
whether keyboard maps are on or off.
(this seems to indicate that the problem is not with the keymaps, but
elsewhere in your system. Could it be that by accident you also switched
the language at the OS-keyboard-level?)
Here's the recipe:
1. Open new document
2. type some text, including punctuation symbols
3. Set language to Farsi (Edit->Test Style->Customize->Language set to Farsi)
Try switching languages by typing "language farsi" in the minibuffer
(Alt-x).
4. Type some text.
5. Set language to English or American (Edit->Test
Style->Customize->Language set to English)
Again, try the same command as above (still with "farsi"! this will
toggle farsi off).
6. Type text. Punctuation symbols are now wrong.
Does this help?
If it does, you can bind the "language farsi" command to a key, see,
e.g., the suggestions here:

I recently installed Lyx 1.5.1 on a WinXP Pro system, seemed to work fine. I installed some additional MiKtex packages and was reconfiguring Lyx when the program froze. After restarting, I am no longer able to run Lyx - I get the error messaeg: TextClassList::Read: no textclasses found! when I try, and Lyx will not start. I tried to reinstall Lyx in the hope that this would also reinstall or reconfigure the textclasses or list, but it didn't work. Any suggestions on what to do to fix Lyx? Thanks

My posts to the LyX list (but no other lists) magically started bouncing a few days ago, siting a timeout condition on a server at WIERDLMPC.MSCI.MEMPHIS.EDU. I finally performed a workaround by switching to another SMTP server using a different port number. It's in the 'genmisc' package.
Sometimes individual style files (such as time.sty) are bundled into a
collection with a different name. I've found the best bet is to use the
CTAN search-by-name feature (http://www.ctan.org/search.html#byName) to
locate the style file. This case is a bit trickier: CTAN reports it's
in macros/generic/misc/, but "generic/misc" ends up being the genmisc
package in MikTeX.

I was actually pondering something along those lines while driving to work this morning. The original versions of these reports were put together using PowerPoint(!), and look terrible; but I believe I have now convinced all the decision-makers to use Lyx for the revision. I've already achieved some penetration in the company (I'm a consultant, not an employee). I gave the Latin American marketing man a PDF file of a report I had written, for him to translate into Spanish. He asked for the MS Word version, so I gave him my Lyx version. After struggling with writing the translation in OpenOffice for a few days, he installed Lyx on his computer and was delighted with how much easier it was to use. Never mind - its me who is using this old-fashioned version :-) I would love to switch to 1.5. Show stopper is the on-screen font rendering, which is, well, not so nice. This is not to blame on LyX, but on QT4 and the SunRay X-Server. QT4 uses a new engine for font smoothing that requires an X-Server extension not offered by our SunRay servers. So the new LyX looks ... ugly. (Stupid me, being spoiled by Windows' font smoothing engine for years, I just can't bear this any more.) Daniel

Comparing .lyx files to see updates + feature request
Dear All, I would like to ask you about document comparison. How can I compare two .lyx document to see the changes between them? It would be quite nice for updating translations.(since thange tracking is disabled for this.) A few month ago I've set-up a local svn on my linux box to store both the english version and the localised version of the lyx docs. Thus, I can translate only one file free from any changes. When I finish, I can compare my old english file to the actual one to see what was changed and correct it in the localised one. I do it in the following way: 1. export both "english".lyx file to txt by ps2txt (since it almost handles one line per paragraph) 2. compare them with krusaider's diff command (File->compare by content) 3. modification of "hungarian".lyx Earlier, I compared the files without converting to txt, so I had to fight with the .lyx file format. Drawbacks: - The diff will see much more changes than there are. Other diffs are similar. - Unfortunately, the one line per pharagraph is not always the case, so some tweaks would be nice One new feature, that I think would be nice: - compare two lyx file and show one with all the changes and let the user to choose what to keep. (Like: http://bugzilla.lyx.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1897) Can you offer an other or better solution? Alex

found. When I browse for packages to install via MikTex time is not
an option.
By "too fancy" I mean that I don't seem to get any headers unless I
use \pagestyle{fancy} (i.e. \pagestyle{plain} just gives my page
numbers in the footer). And if I use \pagestyle{fancy} then I get a
line at the top and section numbers and names (unless I specifically
change them to be empty)... i.e. a bit too fancy but will do the trick
if I can get rid of the line.

To summarize : Desire a single blank page after TOC if TOC is on the recto page. Situation: The TOC was just long enough to be reaching the bottom of the recto page, but not quite. The Chapter following would be "glued" to the TOC without a blank page between them., thus it would appear on the verso -- not ideal. Solution : Insert chapterprecis and type one line, then ctrl-enter and some spaces. I do this under all my chapters and this puts a line under the precis -- which also appears in the toc. This increases the toc size enough for it to break onto the next verso page. Suddenly -- the chapter behaves as expected and jumps to the recto page. In short : Increase the size of the toc by "padding" it some way. FWIW, \d

I don't need this trick any more, as new tex distributions have been tuned for bigger capacities already. Check that you don't have any odd code in preamble or ERT. Aspell problems in Lyx 1.5.1
Hi All I installed 1.5.1 for windows yesterday . It is a vast improvement on the already good 1.4.1 I had previously. The only thing that doesn't work is the spellchecker. I have a working aspell installed under C:\Aspell . In the preferences > language settings > spellchecker the spellchecker executable shows a greyed out "aspell (library)". Does anyone have an idea what can be wrong or how I can point LyX to my Aspell instalation Regards Christiaan
