In this case, it's rather an issue of font (or math-package) choice than
a LyX issue.

You could try with the packages txfonts, pxfonts, mathdesign, or fourier.

Having an unicode export and an ascii export is fine. Going ascii-only 
from what we have is a huge regression. Non-english languages tend to 
have more than ascii in the text itself, and of course we want to keep 
the text intact even with an export that loose all 
formatting/images/formulas.


If quotes is the only problem, take a look at the dialog for selecting 
quote styles. There are many options there. Perhaps a ascii-only style 
could be added there, and solve this particular problem.  It could have 
double and 'single' quotes using ascii.

The LaTeX log might shed some light on what is going wrong.  Another 
possibility is to start LyX in a terminal with the -dbg graphics

In this particular case, the quotes are the problem.  But the purpose of the 
restriction on the mailing list is to make it accessible to everyone by 
banning Microsoft formats.  The filters which catch RTF (for example) also 
catch Unicode, in this case quotes, but it could easily be accented 
characters or other non-ASCII characters such as ø.  The ascii-only quote 
style would solve the problem with quotes, but leave any other unicode 
characters.  Interestingly, the 1500 word post which raised the list 
administrator's ire included a single sentence in Spanish with two accented 
characters in it -- he didn't notice that.

But I have solved the problem by adding an ASCII format and defining a 
conversion from text to ASCII using recode.

There are apparently incorrect paths hardcoded into the version of 
TeX4HT that comes with MiKTeX 2.7.  I tried hacking the .env file, to no 
avail.  Andreas Hofer's workaround works for me, though:  create 
C:\tex4ht\texmf\ and copy the entire tex4ht directory from under MiKTeX 
2.7 into that (creating C:\tex4ht\texmf\tex4ht\ and assorted 
subdirectories).

It is not apparent to me why you are doing it this way.

I have converted from a big document to a single small master document
that includes the separate chapters.

Here is the result, so far. My manuscript, Stuff Worth Knowing (And
Not Much More) http://pj.freefaculty.org/stat/StuffWorthKnowing.pdf.

Here are some problems I've run into.

1. Chapters that use literate programming/noweb are not processed by
LyX when they are inserted into the main book.  This is a
long-standing known bug that we've discussed in LyX-devel email.  If
you have some literate markup in you chapters, it is necessary to put
that material in the main document in order to force the noweb
processor to manage it.

2. It is much nicer to work on the separate chapters in separate
files.  They are smaller, more manageable.  If you are smart and you
keep the chapters in separate directories, your life will be happier.
If  you make LaTeX mistakes, it is easier to diagnose them by looking
at individual chapters.

There are no show-stopping problems for me, but a few little problems.
 Even though each chapter setup indicates that it has a master
document, and I *thought* Lyx would get a pre-amble from that master
document, it appears to have no effect when I look at chapters. I want
ragged-right output, and it appears necessary to put the \RaggedRight
stuff in every chapter preamble.  When I view chapters by themselves,
they do not inherit the preamble of the master document.  So I end up
copying the whole preamble from the master document into each chapter.
 Boring.

Also, it is a problem that Chapter numbering is not correct when you
work on chapters by themselves.  There is an easy fix to set the
chapter counter in ERT at the top of the document, but it is a bit of
a pain.

Another problem I notice is that it is tedious to experiment with
different document settings when working on separate chapters.  If the
main document, the one that has all the includes, is KOMA script, but
then a chapter is just regular book, then when you use LyX to try view
the whole document, you will get a lot of warnings about child
documents of different types every time you view.

When there are things to go wrong, it seems like I can usually find
them.  Hope that helps.

Lyx won't open on OS 10.3.9

I'm trying to install LyX and having some trouble.  The disk mounts
just fine: I can run the intaller, read the readme, and drag
application to my applications folder.  However, when I go to open
LyX, it simply doesnt work.  No error message, no crash, it just
starts bouncing on the dock for a few seconds and disappears.
Any idea what could be wrong?
FYI, when I ran the installer it went through just fine but never
asked me for a password (not sure if it got it from keychain or
something).

There, Bennett Helm says to run LyX from the terminal and report what
happens.  I am not sure exactly what his command of
/path/to/LyX.app/Contents/MacOS/lyx means, but I went into terminal
and commanded:
/applications/lyx.app/Contents/MacOS/lyx
and I recieved:
Segmentation fault

If this is not what I was supposed to enter, please let me know
clearly what I should enter and I will do another test.

Does this mean LyX will not work on my OS  Will a previous edition
work, and if so which is the last one certified to work on 10.3.9?

adding hebrew breaks table of contents???

hello,

  i maintain a document that i wrote using lyx.
  recently i added some content that uses a mix
  of two alphabets:  english (primary language of
  the document) and hebrew.

  now when i export the document to pdf
  (with lyx --export pdf2 guide.lyx)
  i notice that the table of contents is messed
  up.  specifically, the chapters hierarchy ends up
  nested somehow.  instead of 1-2 dozen chapters,
  i see only chapters 1  2, where ch3 is nested as
  a child element inside chapter 2.  this repeats
  so that for example chapter 7 is inside chapter 3.
  so the whole toc is output, but the hierachy is
  messed up.

  the text changes i made to my lyx file are nowhere
  near the table of contents so i have no clue why
  this mixed language text addition should cause this
  problem.

  that produces the messed up toc:

I'm also stuck in the OS X 10.3.9 universe, happily using LyX 1.3.7. I 
did try the LyX 1.5 series of releases, but performance was never quite 
satisfactory on OS X 10.3.9. Others may have had more success with 
newer versions of LyX on 10.3.9?

Thanks Paul, it has been very interesting. But you pointed out exactly my fears 
(not the most terrible anyway) so I think I'll try to keep the whole document, 
perhaps... thinking about making branches for old chapters and desactivate them 
when compiling (or better: activate them when need to compile all).
 Do you all think branches could be a possible alternative, at least for saving 
compiling time?

completely LaTeX independent and, if possible, to have an alternate output 
system for printing a simple representation of the content. Citation dialogs 
and any other stuff which do not need LaTeX should work. It doesn't seem to me 
something so difficoult to develop, and it could help in 80% of cases in some 
of Peter's scenarios.

figures, Lyx translates as Indice de cuadros, but is not the right
translation.

And I do not  know what I shoul write in the Preamble in order to get
Indice de figuras as the right traslation.

You have to put \renewcommand\listfigurename{Indice de figuras} in the 
preamble.


However, if you also use babel, this won't work because babel is loaded 
after the user preamble and thus the \listfigurename is reset.


To solve this, you could add an ERT right in front of the List of 
Figures, with the command I gave above.

1. Open one of the document.
2. Place the cursor where you want the contents of the second document

It's basically the same on Windows.  You need oolatex.exe and TeX4HT. 
Assuming you are using MiKTeX 2.7, you should make sure that the tex4ht 
package and the miktex-tex4ht-bin-2.7 package are installed.  The MiKTeX 
bin directory should also contain oolatex.exe.  If it does not, try running


initexmf --mklinks

in a DOS shell and see if that creates oolatex.exe.

If you are using the package babel, insert this in the preamble:

\addto\captionsspanish{\renewcommand{\listfigurename}{\'Indice de Figuras}}

That works for spanish babel option. You can change the aspect of the title. 
For example: {\bfseries\rm\Huge{\'Indice de Figuras}}. And so on.

This must be simple for the experts, but it puzzles me:
I have a file with some figures.  It compiles without any problem on 
both a WINDOWS (with Miktex 2.7) machine and on a Kubuntu 8.10 machine, 
both running Lyx 16.1.  But on another WINDOWS machine (Miktex 2.7, Lyx 
1.6.1) it fails to compile (View--pdflatex), returning an errors.  
However, if on that machine the pdf figures are replaced by their eps 
equivalents, all is fine.


What is going on?  No packages seem to be missing (there are no error 
messages complaining about that).

files and libraries on the two and you'll eventually find the difference.

Unfortunately, it looks like the precompiled binaries that we produce
will not work on 10.3.9. I believe the 1.4 series will work as is with
10.3.9, and I believe it was faster than the 1.5 series (though not as
fast as 1.3.

1.6 should work for you, but you'd need to compile it yourself. There
is a macports version of it; compiling it via macports would be as
simple as:

sudo port install lyx

Thanks.  I did suspect a converter, but the lists of converters under 
/tools/preferences/file-handling/converters seem identical.  In 
addition, both Windows machines are running the same version of Lyx, 
installed a couple of days apart.  It is unclear why they should differ, 
and why there would be no more specific error message from Lyx about the 
failure.

  I don't do windows so I've no idea where they'd be in the LaTeX port. The
LyX interface calls the tool or library to do the work. Those who are
familiar with Microsoft products and applications ported to them can help
you.

ACM SIGs vs SIGPLAN

Greetings -- I'm typesetting a paper for ACM SIGKDD, and found ACM  
SIGPLAN style by George Fairbanks, now in the latest LyX 1.6.1,  
described on the wiki at

However, SIGKDD refers to a general SIGs format at

http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates

Are there folks here who compared those and who can tell how those  
general SIG formats correspond to the SIGPLAN one, and/or how one  
can take the general SIG formats and create two more layouts in LyX?

In this case, it's rather an issue of font (or math-package) choice than
a LyX issue.

You could try with the packages txfonts, pxfonts, mathdesign, or fourier.

Having an unicode export and an ascii export is fine. Going ascii-only 
from what we have is a huge regression. Non-english languages tend to 
have more than ascii in the text itself, and of course we want to keep 
the text intact even with an export that loose all 
formatting/images/formulas.


If quotes is the only problem, take a look at the dialog for selecting 
quote styles. There are many options there. Perhaps a ascii-only style 
could be added there, and solve this particular problem.  It could have 
double and 'single' quotes using ascii.

The LaTeX log might shed some light on what is going wrong.  Another 
possibility is to start LyX in a terminal with the -dbg graphics 
option and watch for messages.

In this particular case, the quotes are the problem.  But the purpose of the 
restriction on the mailing list is to make it accessible to everyone by 
banning Microsoft formats.  The filters which catch RTF (for example) also 
catch Unicode, in this case quotes, but it could easily be accented 
characters or other non-ASCII characters such as ø.  The ascii-only quote 
style would solve the problem with quotes, but leave any other unicode 
characters.  Interestingly, the 1500 word post which raised the list 
administrator's ire included a single sentence in Spanish with two accented 
characters in it -- he didn't notice that.

But I have solved the problem by adding an ASCII format and defining a 
conversion from text to ASCII using recode.

There are apparently incorrect paths hardcoded into the version of 
TeX4HT that comes with MiKTeX 2.7.  I tried hacking the .env file, to no 
avail.  Andreas Hofer's workaround works for me, though:  create 
C:\tex4ht\texmf\ and copy the entire tex4ht directory from under MiKTeX 
2.7 into that (creating C:\tex4ht\texmf\tex4ht\ and assorted 
subdirectories).

It is not apparent to me why you are doing it this way.

I just prepared some howto notes for my students about including a
bibliography file in lyx and using the lyx citation mechanism.  You

I have converted from a big document to a single small master document
that includes the separate chapters.

Here is the result, so far. My manuscript, Stuff Worth Knowing (And
Not Much More) http://pj.freefaculty.org/stat/StuffWorthKnowing.pdf.

Here are some problems I've run into.

1. Chapters that use literate programming/noweb are not processed by
LyX when they are inserted into the main book.  This is a
long-standing known bug that we've discussed in LyX-devel email.  If
you have some literate markup in you chapters, it is necessary to put
that material in the main document in order to force the noweb
processor to manage it.

2. It is much nicer to work on the separate chapters in separate
files.  They are smaller, more manageable.  If you are smart and you
keep the chapters in separate directories, your life will be happier.
If  you make LaTeX mistakes, it is easier to diagnose them by looking
at individual chapters.

There are no show-stopping problems for me, but a few little problems.
 Even though each chapter setup indicates that it has a master
document, and I *thought* Lyx would get a pre-amble from that master
document, it appears to have no effect when I look at chapters. I want
ragged-right output, and it appears necessary to put the \RaggedRight
stuff in every chapter preamble.  When I view chapters by themselves,
they do not inherit the preamble of the master document.  So I end up
copying the whole preamble from the master document into each chapter.
 Boring.

Also, it is a problem that Chapter numbering is not correct when you
work on chapters by themselves.  There is an easy fix to set the
chapter counter in ERT at the top of the document, but it is a bit of
a pain.

Another problem I notice is that it is tedious to experiment with
different document settings when working on separate chapters.  If the
main document, the one that has all the includes, is KOMA script, but
then a chapter is just regular book, then when you use LyX to try view
the whole document, you will get a lot of warnings about child
documents of different types every time you view.

When there are things to go wrong, it seems like I can usually find
them.  Hope that helps.

Lyx won't open on OS 10.3.9

Hi there:
I'm trying to install LyX and having some trouble.  The disk mounts
just fine: I can run the intaller, read the readme, and drag
application to my applications folder.  However, when I go to open
LyX, it simply doesnt work.  No error message, no crash, it just
starts bouncing on the dock for a few seconds and disappears.
Any idea what could be wrong?
FYI, when I ran the installer it went through just fine but never
asked me for a password (not sure if it got it from keychain or
something).

There, Bennett Helm says to run LyX from the terminal and report what
happens.  I am not sure exactly what his command of
/path/to/LyX.app/Contents/MacOS/lyx means, but I went into terminal
and commanded:
/applications/lyx.app/Contents/MacOS/lyx
and I recieved:
Segmentation fault

If this is not what I was supposed to enter, please let me know
clearly what I should enter and I will do another test.

Does this mean LyX will not work on my OS  Will a previous edition
work, and if so which is the last one certified to work on 10.3.9?

adding hebrew breaks table of contents???

hello,

  i maintain a document that i wrote using lyx.
  recently i added some content that uses a mix
  of two alphabets:  english (primary language of
  the document) and hebrew.

  now when i export the document to pdf
  (with lyx --export pdf2 guide.lyx)
  i notice that the table of contents is messed
  up.  specifically, the chapters hierarchy ends up
  nested somehow.  instead of 1-2 dozen chapters,
  i see only chapters 1  2, where ch3 is nested as
  a child element inside chapter 2.  this repeats
  so that for example chapter 7 is inside chapter 3.
  so the whole toc is output, but the hierachy is
  messed up.

  the text changes i made to my lyx file are nowhere
  near the table of contents so i have no clue why
  this mixed language text addition should cause this
  problem.

  here is the diff between a working lyx file and one
  that produces the messed up toc:

I'm also stuck in the OS X 10.3.9 universe, happily using LyX 1.3.7. I 
did try the LyX 1.5 series of releases, but performance was never quite 
satisfactory on OS X 10.3.9. Others may have had more success with 
newer versions of LyX on 10.3.9?

Thanks Paul, it has been very interesting. But you pointed out exactly my fears 
(not the most terrible anyway) so I think I'll try to keep the whole document, 
perhaps... thinking about making branches for old chapters and desactivate them 
when compiling (or better: activate them when need to compile all).
 Do you all think branches could be a possible alternative, at least for saving 
compiling time?

Inmediate actions we can take in respect to these scenarios are of two

with the full version control system activated. This software should be 
completely LaTeX independent and, if possible, to have an alternate output 
system for printing a simple representation of the content. Citation dialogs 
and any other stuff which do not need LaTeX should work. It doesn't seem to me 
something so difficoult to develop, and it could help in 80% of cases in some 
of Peter's scenarios.

But I have a problem with the translation into spanish of: List of
figures, Lyx translates as Indice de cuadros, but is not the right
translation.

And I do not  know what I shoul write in the Preamble in order to get
Indice de figuras as the right traslation.

I hope someone could advise me.

You have to put \renewcommand\listfigurename{Indice de figuras} in the 
preamble.


However, if you also use babel, this won't work because babel is loaded 
after the user preamble and thus the \listfigurename is reset.


To solve this, you could add an ERT right in front of the List of 
Figures, with the command I gave above.

Yes, you can always merge two documents back to one:

1. Open one of the document.
2. Place the cursor where you want the contents of the second document
3. Insert-File-Lyx Document, select the other document.

It's basically the same on Windows.  You need oolatex.exe and TeX4HT. 
Assuming you are using MiKTeX 2.7, you should make sure that the tex4ht 
package and the miktex-tex4ht-bin-2.7 package are installed.  The MiKTeX 
bin directory should also contain oolatex.exe.  If it does not, try running


initexmf --mklinks

in a DOS shell and see if that creates oolatex.exe.

If you are using the package babel, insert this in the preamble:

\addto\captionsspanish{\renewcommand{\listfigurename}{\'Indice de Figuras}}

That works for spanish babel option. You can change the aspect of the title. 
For example: {\bfseries\rm\Huge{\'Indice de Figuras}}. And so on.

Lyx/ Biblatex import Problems

trying to import a tex-file with the biblatex-command \Cite (with

Puzzled

This must be simple for the experts, but it puzzles me:
I have a file with some figures.  It compiles without any problem on 
both a WINDOWS (with Miktex 2.7) machine and on a Kubuntu 8.10 machine, 
both running Lyx 16.1.  But on another WINDOWS machine (Miktex 2.7, Lyx 
1.6.1) it fails to compile (View--pdflatex), returning an errors.  
However, if on that machine the pdf figures are replaced by their eps 
equivalents, all is fine.


What is going on?  No packages seem to be missing (there are no error 
messages complaining about that).

Ehud,

  You are missing a converter on your second Microsoft machine. Compare all
files and libraries on the two and you'll eventually find the difference.

Unfortunately, it looks like the precompiled binaries that we produce
will not work on 10.3.9. I believe the 1.4 series will work as is with
10.3.9, and I believe it was faster than the 1.5 series (though not as
fast as 1.3.

1.6 should work for you, but you'd need to compile it yourself. There
is a macports version of it; compiling it via macports would be as
simple as:

sudo port install lyx

Thanks.  I did suspect a converter, but the lists of converters under 
/tools/preferences/file-handling/converters seem identical.  In 
addition, both Windows machines are running the same version of Lyx, 
installed a couple of days apart.  It is unclear why they should differ, 
and why there would be no more specific error message from Lyx about the 
failure.

By the way, which libraries were you referring to?

  You are missing a converter on your second Microsoft machine. 
Compare all

files and libraries on the two and you'll eventually find the difference.

  I don't do windows so I've no idea where they'd be in the LaTeX port. The
LyX interface calls the tool or library to do the work. Those who are

ACM SIGs vs SIGPLAN

Greetings -- I'm typesetting a paper for ACM SIGKDD, and found ACM  
SIGPLAN style by George Fairbanks, now in the latest LyX 1.6.1,  
described on the wiki at

In this case, it's rather an issue of font (or math-package) choice than
a LyX issue.

You could try with the packages txfonts, pxfonts, mathdesign, or fourier.

The first section of the introduction (help->introduction) already 
explains this over a couple of pages. Getting people to actually read it

Having an unicode export and an ascii export is fine. Going ascii-only 
from what we have is a huge regression. Non-english languages tend to 
have more than ascii in the text itself, and of course we want to keep 
the text intact even with an export that loose all 
formatting/images/formulas.


If quotes is the only problem, take a look at the dialog for selecting 
quote styles. There are many options there. Perhaps a "ascii-only" style 
could be added there, and solve this particular problem.  It could have 
"double" and 'single' quotes using ascii.

The LaTeX log might shed some light on what is going wrong.  Another 
possibility is to start LyX in a terminal with the "-dbg graphics"

In this particular case, the quotes are the problem.  But the purpose of the 
restriction on the mailing list is to make it accessible to everyone by 
banning Microsoft formats.  The filters which catch RTF (for example) also 
catch Unicode, in this case quotes, but it could easily be accented 
characters or other non-ASCII characters such as ø.  The ascii-only quote 
style would solve the problem with quotes, but leave any other unicode 
characters.  Interestingly, the 1500 word post which raised the list 
administrator's ire included a single sentence in Spanish with two accented 
characters in it -- he didn't notice that.

But I have solved the problem by adding an ASCII format and defining a 
conversion from text to ASCII using recode.

There are apparently incorrect paths hardcoded into the version of 
TeX4HT that comes with MiKTeX 2.7.  I tried hacking the .env file, to no 
avail.  Andreas Hofer's workaround works for me, though:  create 
C:\tex4ht\texmf\ and copy the entire tex4ht directory from under MiKTeX 
2.7 into that (creating C:\tex4ht\texmf\tex4ht\ and assorted 
subdirectories).

I have converted from a big document to a single small master document
that includes the separate chapters.

Here is the result, so far. My manuscript, "Stuff Worth Knowing (And
Not Much More)" http://pj.freefaculty.org/stat/StuffWorthKnowing.pdf.

Here are some problems I've run into.

1. Chapters that use literate programming/noweb are not processed by
LyX when they are inserted into the main book.  This is a
long-standing known bug that we've discussed in LyX-devel email.  If
you have some literate markup in you chapters, it is necessary to put
that material in the main document in order to force the noweb
processor to manage it.

2. It is much nicer to work on the separate chapters in separate
files.  They are smaller, more manageable.  If you are smart and you
keep the chapters in separate directories, your life will be happier.
If  you make LaTeX mistakes, it is easier to diagnose them by looking
at individual chapters.

There are no show-stopping problems for me, but a few little problems.
 Even though each chapter setup indicates that it has a master
document, and I *thought* Lyx would get a pre-amble from that master
document, it appears to have no effect when I look at chapters. I want
ragged-right output, and it appears necessary to put the \RaggedRight
stuff in every chapter preamble.  When I view chapters by themselves,
they do not inherit the preamble of the master document.  So I end up
copying the whole preamble from the master document into each chapter.
 Boring.

Also, it is a problem that Chapter numbering is not correct when you
work on chapters by themselves.  There is an easy fix to set the
chapter counter in ERT at the top of the document, but it is a bit of
a pain.

Another problem I notice is that it is tedious to experiment with
different document settings when working on separate chapters.  If the
main document, the one that has all the includes, is KOMA script, but
then a chapter is just regular book, then when you use LyX to try view
the whole document, you will get a lot of warnings about child
documents of different types every time you view.

When there are things to go wrong, it seems like I can usually find
them.  Hope that helps.

Lyx won't open on OS 10.3.9

I'm trying to install LyX and having some trouble.  The disk mounts
just fine: I can run the intaller, read the readme, and drag
application to my applications folder.  However, when I go to open
LyX, it simply doesnt work.  No error message, no crash, it just
starts bouncing on the dock for a few seconds and disappears.
Any idea what could be wrong?
FYI, when I ran the installer it went through just fine but never
asked me for a password (not sure if it got it from keychain or
something).

There, Bennett Helm says to run LyX from the terminal and report what
happens.  I am not sure exactly what his command of
"/path/to/LyX.app/Contents/MacOS/lyx" means, but I went into terminal
and commanded:
/applications/lyx.app/Contents/MacOS/lyx
and I recieved:
Segmentation fault

If this is not what I was supposed to enter, please let me know
clearly what I should enter and I will do another test.

Does this mean LyX will not work on my OS  Will a previous edition
work, and if so which is the last one certified to work on 10.3.9?

adding hebrew breaks table of contents???

hello,

  i maintain a document that i wrote using lyx.
  recently i added some content that uses a mix
  of two alphabets:  english (primary language of
  the document) and hebrew.

  now when i export the document to pdf
  (with lyx --export pdf2 guide.lyx)
  i notice that the table of contents is messed
  up.  specifically, the chapters hierarchy ends up
  nested somehow.  instead of 1-2 dozen chapters,
  i see only chapters 1 & 2, where ch3 is nested as
  a child element inside chapter 2.  this repeats
  so that for example chapter 7 is inside chapter 3.
  so the whole toc is output, but the hierachy is
  messed up.

  the text changes i made to my lyx file are nowhere
  near the table of contents so i have no clue why
  this mixed language text addition should cause this
  problem.

  here is the diff between a working lyx file and one
  that produces the messed up toc:

I'm also stuck in the OS X 10.3.9 universe, happily using LyX 1.3.7. I 
did try the LyX 1.5 series of releases, but performance was never quite 
satisfactory on OS X 10.3.9. Others may have had more success with 
newer versions of LyX on 10.3.9?

Thanks Paul, it has been very interesting. But you pointed out exactly my fears 
(not the most terrible anyway) so I think I'll try to keep the whole document, 
perhaps... thinking about making branches for old chapters and desactivate them 
when compiling (or better: activate them when need to compile all).
 Do you all think branches could be a possible alternative, at least for saving 
compiling time?

Good work, Peter: my ideas on the subject are clearer now.

Inmediate actions we can take in respect to these scenarios are of two 
different kinds:

1. Effort in "advertising" LyX. Once, I saw some posts (and I left one) about

completely LaTeX independent and, if possible, to have an alternate output 
system for printing a simple representation of the content. Citation dialogs 
and any other stuff which do not need LaTeX should work. It doesn't seem to me 
something so difficoult to develop, and it could help in 80% of cases in some 
of Peter's scenarios.

document class is BOOK. And I have inserted a List of figures.

But I have a problem with the translation into spanish of: List of
figures, Lyx translates as Indice de cuadros, but is not the right
translation.

And I do not  know what I shoul write in the Preamble in order to get
Indice de figuras as the right traslation.

I hope someone could advise me.

You have to put "\renewcommand\listfigurename{Indice de figuras}" in the 
preamble.


However, if you also use babel, this won't work because babel is loaded 
after the user preamble and thus the \listfigurename is reset.


To solve this, you could add an ERT right in front of the "List of 
Figures", with the command I gave above.

Yes, you can always merge two documents back to one:

1. Open one of the document.
2. Place the cursor where you want the contents of the second document
3. "Insert->File->Lyx Document", select the other document.

It's basically the same on Windows.  You need oolatex.exe and TeX4HT. 
Assuming you are using MiKTeX 2.7, you should make sure that the tex4ht 
package and the miktex-tex4ht-bin-2.7 package are installed.  The MiKTeX 
bin directory should also contain oolatex.exe.  If it does not, try running


initexmf --mklinks

in a DOS shell and see if that creates oolatex.exe.

If you are using the package babel, insert this in the preamble:

\addto\captionsspanish{\renewcommand{\listfigurename}{\'Indice de Figuras}}

That works for spanish babel option. You can change the aspect of the title. 
For example: {\bfseries\rm\Huge{\'Indice de Figuras}}. And so on.

This must be simple for the experts, but it puzzles me:
I have a file with some figures.  It compiles without any problem on 
both a WINDOWS (with Miktex 2.7) machine and on a Kubuntu 8.10 machine, 
both running Lyx 16.1.  But on another WINDOWS machine (Miktex 2.7, Lyx 
1.6.1) it fails to compile (View-->pdflatex), returning an errors.  
However, if on that machine the pdf figures are replaced by their eps 
equivalents, all is fine.


What is going on?  No packages seem to be missing (there are no error 
messages complaining about that).

Unfortunately, it looks like the precompiled binaries that we produce
will not work on 10.3.9. I believe the 1.4 series will work as is with
10.3.9, and I believe it was faster than the 1.5 series (though not as
fast as 1.3.

1.6 should work for you, but you'd need to compile it yourself. There
is a macports version of it; compiling it via macports would be as
simple as:

sudo port install lyx

/tools/preferences/file-handling/converters seem identical.  In 
addition, both Windows machines are running the same version of Lyx, 
installed a couple of days apart.  It is unclear why they should differ, 
and why there would be no more specific error message from Lyx about the 
failure.

By the way, which libraries were you referring to?

  You are missing a converter on your second Microsoft machine. 
Compare all

files and libraries on the two and you'll eventually find the difference.

  I don't do windows so I've no idea where they'd be in the LaTeX port. The
LyX interface calls the tool or library to do the work. Those who are
familiar with Microsoft products and applications ported to them can help
you.

ACM SIGs vs SIGPLAN

Greetings -- I'm typesetting a paper for ACM SIGKDD, and found ACM  
SIGPLAN style by George Fairbanks, now in the latest LyX 1.6.1,  
described on the wiki at

However, SIGKDD refers to a general SIGs format at

Are there folks here who compared those and who can tell how those  
"general" SIG formats correspond to the SIGPLAN one, and/or how one  
can take the "general" SIG formats and create two more layouts in LyX?
