Re: latex template in lyx, newbe

I did do that already and already made several nice documents with the
standard article class. I do, however, not see where the files from the
zip file supplied by the publisher must go
(http://www.oxfordjournals.org/our_journals/rpd/for_authors/Rpd_TeX.zip).
I copied the file Rpd.cls to a subdir rpd in /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex
Did sudo chmod a+r Rpd.cls and sudo mktexlsr which did not complain.
Than as a kind of brute force attempt copied all the other files to both
~/.lyx/layouts and /.lyx/templates.
tex2lyx on the file document.tex results in Could not find layout file
for textclass Rpd.
Now I am stuck because I did not really know what I did and not what to
do. Many thanks for any help.

This seems wrong. As the publisher provides a (La)TeX template, all of this
files should be sorted into the texmf tree. Maybe the zip comes even with an
INSTALL or REAME explaining details?

Then you should try a simple LaTeX example (again, maybe, there is one or a
template in the zip). If this runs, you could start to think about
integration with LyX.

 tex2lyx on the file document.tex results in Could not find layout file
 for textclass Rpd.

You will find details in the HelpCustomization guide (how to install a new
LaTeX class). If there are specific problems left, ask again (best by
giving a minimal example).

LaTeX errors in packages are sometimes hard to trac/localize:

Alternatively, export to LaTeX, run by hand ...

 The errors are that font commands (e.g. \sl and \rm) are

These are obsolete since several years, maybe the new memoir class decided

 and that \footruleskip is already defined.

You might need to have a look at your custom LaTeX preamble and the
layout and module files to find where this first and second definition
takes place.

Again, as this can be hidden in a package this could mean gradually

Document classes are not to be changed. What you need to do is to choose a document class and use
its power. For a thesis I can recommend to use the document class book(koma script) or
report(koma script). Both document classes depend on the koma script LaTeX class which provides

\usepackage{multicol}

then the first line of my main document is

\setlength{\columnsep}{2cm}\setlength{\columnseprule}{1pt}\begin{multicols}{3}

last line is

this produces a nice 3 column document, if you just use

How to allow chapters to start on even numbered pages?

SteveT,

  Have you looked at using the report classes? About the only difference
between the book and report classes is the abstract environment in the
latter.

  Also, I'm sure that if you look in TLC2 you'll find a standard way of
having chapters start on the next available page. And, in the memoir class
(which derives from book) you can have chapters start on the same page as
the end of the previous chapter.

  Lotsa' options.

format PDF, JPG, PNG, or GIF. When you use another image format like EPS, LyX has to convert the
images to one of the four formats in the background which extends the document compile time when
viewing/exporting it.)

There were two other problems:

- you scaled the image absolutely, but when you want to control the whitespace, you need to scale
the image relatively to the column width. When you e.g. set your wrap float to 50% column width and
do the same for your image you get no whitespace. When you set the image to 40% column width, you
get some whitespace around it.

- when you want the figure centered you can set its paragraph to centered and don't need to use a

column border. So in your case I would set the paragraph where the image is in to right aligned.

If there are specific problems left, ask again (best by
giving a minimal example).

its power. For a thesis I can recommend to use the document class book(koma script) or
report(koma script). Both document classes depend on the koma script LaTeX class which provides

Hi

\usepackage{multicol}

then the first line of my main document is

\setlength{\columnsep}{2cm}\setlength{\columnseprule}{1pt}\begin{multicols}{3}

last line is

this produces a nice 3 column document, if you just use
\begin{multicols}{2} it should do it, if you did this

\begin{multicols}{2}
paragraph you want in 2 columns
\end{multicols}

normal formatted paragraph,

it should do the part after \end{multicols} as normal text,

I have put a 3 column document in pdf on my website at

hope this helps

So in your case I would set the paragraph where the image is in to right aligned.

tex2lyx on the file document.tex results in "Could not find layout file

This seems wrong. As the publisher provides a (La)TeX template, all of this
files should be sorted into the texmf tree. Maybe the zip comes even with an
INSTALL or REAME explaining details?

Then you should try a simple LaTeX example (again, maybe, there is one or a
template in the zip). If this runs, you could start to think about
integration with LyX.

You will find details in the Help>Customization guide ("how to install a new

These are obsolete since several years, maybe the new memoir class decided
to drop backwards compatibility. Are they used by LyX, ERT, or preamble
(maybe indirect)?

You might need to have a look at your custom LaTeX preamble and the
layout and module files to find where this first and second definition
takes place.

Again, as this can be hidden in a package this could mean gradually
removing all special packages and customization.

Also, you can still copy a bind file to your ~/.lyx/ dir and edit in an

Problems with starting lyx 1.6.2.

2009-04-08 Thread Lasse Laakso

Hi,

I just downloaded the new version of lyx, installed it according to

1.5.6. worked without any trouble. Where can I look for the flaw?
Should I try some other way to install the software? I even tried to
remove the "prerequistis" file from lyx 1.6. folder, but that either
did not help. I even restarted the computer once after intalling, but
still it will not start. Now text or notification is seen once I press

  Actually i need both of these approaches: insert a single page (so
as a graphic it's a viable option) and multiple pages (so i need to
do it via pdfpages).
  If no better solution appears i'll use a mix of the two methods.

normal fontsize and, if you have scalable fonts, 20pt, 25pt, 30pt, 36pt,

you create your particular design. The class incorporates over 30 of the
more popular packages.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE ASK THEM ON THE COMP.TEXT.TEX NEWSGROUP;
YOU ARE LIKELY TO GET FASTER AND BETTER ANSWERS THAN IF YOU EMAIL ME DIRECTLY
AS I AM AWAY MORE OFTEN THAN NOT.

NOTE: In order to provide fixes for any problems that may arise
between major releases, you may find a file called mempatch.sty
which contains any current fixes for the memoir class. The class
will automatically include this so DO NOT \usepackage{mempatch}.
The Change lists below do not neccessarily note each release of
the patch or addendum files.

   NOTE: Similarly, there may be file(s) called memmanadd.(tex|pdf) which
provides amendments to the current version of the User Manual.

   NOTE: If you are using the hyperref package dated earlier than 2006/11/15,
use the memhfixc package after the hyperref package, e.g.,

\usepackage[...]{hyperref}
\usepackage{memhfixc}

Later versions of the hyperref package automatically load the memhfixc package.

NOTE: The full User Manual (memman.pdf) is a large document approaching
600 pages in total. You do not need to print all of it, especially if you
already have an earlier edition. Roughly speaking, the main portions are:
o Frontmatter: Preface, Toc, Introduction, Terminology ~ 35 pages
o Mainmatter:
Design and typography ~ 60 pages
Class commands and environments, etc. ~ 335 pages
o Appendices: (La)Tex programming, Errors and warnings ~ 40 pages

Changes (2009/01/26)
o Memoir v1.6180339c released with minor bug fixes that could

Document classes are not to be changed. What you need to do is to choose a document class and use
its power. For a thesis I can recommend to use the document class "book(koma script)" or
"report(koma script)". Both document classes depend on the koma script LaTeX class which provides
you everything you need for a thesis like automatic print space calculation, formatting of page
headers and footers, binding correction, formatting of title pages, ...

koma script has an excellent documentation, search the web for the file
"scrguien.pdf"

The two-column bit you can do fairly easily, though I think you need ERT
to do it. Check out the LaTeX multicol package, here:

There may be something about its use on the wiki, as well.

As for the title, you'll probably have to do that manually, i.e., just
formatting it as you want it to be.

On their website
http://www.springer.com/authors/manuscript+guidelines/kap+single-column+proceedings+volume?SGWID=0-40493-0-0-0
they offer a general template for LaTeX.

I tried "Import from LaTeX" within Lyx, but it seems not that easy ;) ...
(fails)

Is there some FAQ / similiar post, where the necessary steps are described?

It would be really an advantage to do writing with Lyx!

Hi

In my pre-amble I have

\usepackage{multicol}

then the first line of my main document is

\setlength{\columnsep}{2cm}\setlength{\columnseprule}{1pt}\begin{multicols}{3}

last line is

\end{multicols}

this produces a nice 3 column document, if you just use
\begin{multicols}{2} it should do it, if you did this

\begin{multicols}{2}
paragraph you want in 2 columns
\end{multicols}

normal formatted paragraph,

it should do the part after \end{multicols} as normal text,

I have put a 3 column document in pdf on my website at
http://www.zleap.net/downloads/ldtp-contribs/ along with the lyx source
code (ver 1.5.6)

hope this helps

How to allow chapters to start on even numbered pages?

2009-04-08 Thread Steve Litt
Hi all,

My book, which is intended to be an eBook, uses a document class derived from
the Book document class. I want it to keep being derived from Book.

I unchecked the "two sided document" checkbox on the "page layout" part of the
document settings, but it still skips pages in order to start every chapter
on an odd page.

Always starting on odd pages is great for a print book, but it just fluffs up
an eBook. Is there a simple way to let chapters start on even pages, or am I
going to have to modify the Chapter envionment in my layout file?

Re: Caption width in wrapped figures

Ehud Kaplan schrieb:

But the white space around the graphics itself persists.

Because your image contains the whitespace. I converted your image to a PDF as I assume that your
document should also be a PDF and removed the whitespace. (You can insert images to LyX in every
format, but they can only be embedded to the resulting document PDF output when they are in the
format PDF, JPG, PNG, or GIF.

- when you want the figure centered you can set its paragraph to centered and don't need to use a
LaTeX command But when using wrapped figures one often wants the image to be aligned with the text
column border. So in your case I would set the paragraph where the image is in to right aligned.

In a separate email I attached the example file.
