Re: [Figure embedding] An easy way to share lyx documents

2009-04-16 Thread Rainer M Krug
Just my two cents worth:

1) I like the lyx format as it is BECAUSE it is not compressed, so I
would definitely not change the default format.

2) I like the idea of an export format, which effectively compresses
all files necessary into a single file. This is very nice for
archiving final documents (lets call it .lyxa for lyx Archive).

3) .lyxa should represent a directory tree, in which subfolders hold
pictures, bibtex, ... files.

4) .lyxa should be usable directly, i.e. the .lyx document should be
modified during export to contain only a) relative paths which b) only
are in subdirectories of the location of .lyx

5) .lyxa should contain information of the original location of the
foles on the system where it was created, to be able to update the
files not in the subdirectory.

6) One should be able to open a .lyxa file (which would modify the
files in the .lyxa but not the original location information (from 5))
or imported (showing the differences of the files in the .lyxa and the
original files and update the files when confirmed from the ones in
the .lyxa)

In this way, the .lyxa could be used as a colaborative tool (original
author exports, sends .lyxa to other authors, they open it, save it,
send it back, oroginal author imports it and confirms the files which
should be overwritten) and as an archive tool of finalised documents.

Cheers,

Rainer

Hi.
Is it possible to change the default unit for column width from inch
to mm (or something else?)

I for one have had large troubles when asking people to cooperate with me,
because I had to give them precise instructions how to set up lyx. The image
relative path thing I could solve by making lyx find the pictures using
relative paths and otherwise sharing the folder using dropbox, so i didn't
need to tar/untar anything. What was REALLY difficult was the .module I had
written for the document. It cannot be accessed by a relative path; it needs
to be inserted directly into the lyx tree. On OSX, I have to redo the module
installation procedure on every update.

I would like to point to how pages treats its documents. Pages documents are
identified with directories, which contain the required images, texts and
properties. No zipping into one archive is done. OSX then makes the
directory look like a file (called a package) in finder.

I think, sharing lyx documents would would be simplified by providing
self-contained bundles that can be shipped around.

Error converting to loadable format

2009-04-16 Thread Eliseu Filho
Greetings

I've just upgraded from lyx 1.5.7-1 to 1.6.2-1. I am having problems to
visualize .eps figures inserted in the text. This is happening both with
figures already inserted in the text edited on 1.5.7-1, as well as for
new figures that I try to insert using 1.6.2-1. Inside the Graphics box,
I get the name of the .eps file and below it the message:

Error converting to loadable format

The problem is only with picture visualization in the lyx GUI. If I
generate a pdf file, the pictures do appear in the generated pdf.

Some system configuration info:

Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 2
2.00 GB RAM with Physical Address Extension
Aspell 0.6
Ghostscript 8.61
ImageMagick 6.5.1-3 Q16 (2009-05-01)

Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks, that worked. In case anybody else is interested, here are step
by step instructions

Windows (Vista)
Right click on computer, choose "properties"
Choose "advanced systems settings"
Click "Environment variables..."
Add BIBINPUTS as new user variable, and put path(s)

Mac
In finder, choose Go->go to folder... ~/.MacOSX
Edit "environment.plist" (for example using Pref Setter, a shareware
application)
Add BIBINPUTS as a new key, and put path(s).
Restart computer (seems necessary).

Once this is set, it also works in LyX.

Further notice that some places on the web state
that the environment name is BIBINPUT (singular), but that seems
incorrect.

frankly, docbook in lyx is _effectively_ abandoned for a long time.
i can't remember anybody working on this field during last few years
- the only activity are the manuals how to bypass lyx problems by
third party tools and hopeless call for help from time to time on this
list ;)

out of curiosity i just crawled through logs and commits with comments like
 * src/insets/InsetFloat.{cpp, h}:
- let nested floats be subfloats
NOTE: docbook support is missing.

make me wonder how many newer lyx parts are able to cope with docbook at all :)

You're welcome to work on this if you like, of course. LyX used to

this kind of thing would be possible.

That said, collaboration doesn't exactly require a web-based
