I know of the package named cancel, and this works in ERT mode.

I really don’t want to use ERT if I can help it.

Of course, I would like it to work in the maths-display mode.


This is currently supported in LyX. With the cursor inside a math inset, 
look on the math toolbar (the one that gives you font choices, relation 
symbols etc.) for an icon that looks like the outline of a square with a 
hat over it. (The tool tip for it is "Frame decorations".) Click that, 
and near the bottom you'll see all the commands from the cancel package 
implemented.
