Thank,

OK, You have to activate the continuous spellchecker
This is a "new" option. At least using lyx for a very long time, I was not
warned of this option.

Thanks.

I am talking about the context menu. In the spellchecker dialog, this
equals "Ignore All"

You have to click on any occurrence of that word in the document.

No, that's generated by "Ignore all in this document"

It does. Right click on the word and select "Remove from document

Hi Jose,

What you are describing is the standard use of dictionary,
but Lyx has also the option of using its internal dictionary (generated by
ignore all)
If I am correct the word are store under \spellchecker_ignore
But lyx does not offer the option to remove these words.
The only way that I found is to edit the lyx file and to remove the line
if you wish to remove a word from the internal dictionary.

Hi Patrick,
  I am not sure if I am answering your question. :-)

In my case, in the user directory (~/.lyx/ here) I have several
pwl_*.dict files.

Those are text files where the word that we say to ignore are listed,
one per line.

I hope that this helps,

It seems that there is a an instruction like \spellchecker_ignore
How can I modify the associated word list?

Memoir's own index implementation is fundamentally incompatible with
splitidx which is used by LyX for multiple indexes. It is possible to
add special support for memoir (I am going to look into that), but
currently you need to refrain from using LyX's multiple index support
and do the second index manually.

Here is some support:

* Store the attached memoir-nomindex.module in your User Directory (see
Help > About LyX) in a sub-folder "layouts"

* put the attached "makeindexall" python script in your PATH and make
it executable

In LyX:

* Tools > Reconfigure and restart
* Load the module "Index of Names for the Memoir Class"
* In Tools > Preferences > Output > LaTeX, change the index processor
to "custom" and enter "makeindexall"

You will now find an inset for name index entries in Insert > Custom
Insets and an inset for the actual inset in Insert >
List/Content/References.

To change the header of the second index, put in TeX mode
\renewcommand{\indexname}{Name Index}
right before it

If you want a different second index than a name index, adjust this
accordingly.

Hope this helps

(I am also updating the wiki and provide these files there)

Re: Multiple indices/indexes and Memoir

2024-07-25 Thread Mathias Girel
Sorry for auto-replying, but I've managed to produce these indexes from a
minimal example (Memoir and selecting multiple indexes from the lyx menu).
Do not lose time on this.
The problem seems to come from other options in the preamble, which clash
with the index.
I'll try to find out exactly what interferes and if I'm successful, I'll
post the result in reply.

This sounds like registry corruption.

Lyx 2.4.1 on Windows 11 doesn't find python

2024-07-25 Thread Torquil Macdonald Sørensen
Hi!

I previously used Lyx 2.3.7, which worked fine. After uninstalling
that and installing 2.4.1, it doesn't work anymore. I have tried both
the options "For everyone" and "Only for me" in the Lyx installer.

The Python directory should be correctly included in the system PATH,
because I can run python from the command prompt without problems, as
you can see here:
$ C:\Users\TorquilSørensen\AppData\Local\Programs\LyX 2.4\bin>python
Python 3.11.1 (tags/v3.11.1:a7a450f, Dec  6 2022, 19:58:39) [MSC
v.1934 64 bit (AMD64)] on win32
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> exit()

However, when I run Lyx within the same command prompt, I'm getting
the following:

C:\Users\TorquilSørensen\AppData\Local\Programs\LyX 2.4\bin>Error

LyX 2.4.1 just entered backports, so if you are on debian bookworm
derivative you should be able to upgrade. In case it's needed some
instructions are at https://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/LyXOnDebian .

Multiple indices/indexes and Memoir

2024-07-24 Thread Mathias Girel
Dear listers
In the other manuscript I'm editing, in the Memoir class, I'm inserting
index entries but having access to Lyx's native handling of multiples
indices would be extremely helpful.
I know that in the past it required a special handling just for this class
(see https://wiki.lyx.org/Tips/Indexing), but I'm nore sure if that's still
a thing.

In my document, if I select multiple indexes, and create an index rerum,
for example, it generates an error (seen screenshot). I have the exact same
message even if I'm using a MWE (one paragraph, two entries belonging to
two indexes).
My question is: is it a necessary consequence of the Memoir class (implying
some tricky workaround as explained in the wiki), or is there a neat
workaround in Lyx, for example by adding something in the preamble to avoid
this conflict?
I can live with a single index, if it's too complex to solve, but I really
like the way multiple indices are integrated in LyX, which makes inserting
entries so easy.
Thanks for your help! (and kudos for the great work on 2.4!!)

This is a little bit tangent so forgive me for this post. :-)

$ sudo dnf install texlive-scheme-full

and problem solved. :-D

Yes, you can still complain that some documentation is not installed
this way, but... :-)

My more serious problem with the download on demand is that it
sometimes occurs at times that I have other demands. And it usually at
that time picks precisely the slowest mirror. I have been there. :-(

LyX 2.4.0

Dear Hung-Tzu,

Thanks for the files. I can confirm that I observe hangs when
scrolling with LyX 2.4.1 and that the performance is much much better
with current 2.4.2~devel.

What's the latest "stable" version of LyX? I just discovered my LyX is
2.3.6.1 from 12/29/2020. What am I missing with my version? It seems OK
to me, and it's what my distro gives me.

LyX 2.4.0 was released in early June (and 2.4.1 in early July). It has
boatloads of new features:

    https://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/NewInLyX24

It can be downloaded from lyx.org.

Since you are on Linux, it is easy to compile yourself, and even to
install it in parallel to 2.3.6.1. (By default, the self-compiled
version installs to /usr/local/, and this can be configured. You can
also use e.g. --program-suffix=2.4 to have the binary be "lyx-2.4", and
not just "lyx".) Just use a separate user directory with 2.4 (use the
-userdir option when launching). 2.4.x can read older files, and export
to 2.3.x format, but we do not recommend trying to move back and forth
with a single file. The kind of 'round trip' does not always work well
(depending upon how many of the new features you have used).

If you decide to switch to 2.4.x, then of course you don't have to worry
about the separate user directory, etc.

Until hell freezes over :-)

OK, back on topic, I know nothing about tectonic except what your URL
told me. Normally, I'm a LuaTeX/LuaLaTeX type guy, and the only
disadvantage is a longer document compile time. Looking at the
advantages the URL discusses:

* automatically downloads support files so you don't need a full LaTeX
  installation.
- I already have a full LaTeX installation. Today's hard disks
  are big enough that you can just tell CTAN to give you
  everything. I'm a huge fan of using CTAN rather than your
  distribution's LaTeX package.

* Automatically loops TeX and BibTeX
- Nothing I can't do with shellscripts. I do this with
  shellscripts every day.

* Tectonic command-line program is quiet and never stops to ask for
  input.
- I'd rather get all output and have it ask. Easier for
  troubleshooting.

* Tectonic can use modern OpenType fonts and is fully Unicode-enabled.
- I already have these benefits with LuaTeX.

* Tectonic engine has been extracted into a completely self-contained
  library so that it can be embedded in other applications.
- This is pretty cool, and if I ever need it, I'll grab
  Tectonic.

* Developed in the open on GitHub using modern tools like the Rust
  language.
- Yawn.

* Tectonic can be used from Github Actions to typeset your documents
  whenever a change to them is made.
- Oh Hell No! I don't want my document production work flow
  depending on something on somebody else's server, especially
  the less-than-free Github. I have a 14TB hard disk and am not
  a Cloud/Software As a Service type guy. Luckily, it appears I
  don't have to use this feature.

In summary, I won't take the time to check this out until other people
have reported very positive experiences with it.

Never used that, and their web is very vague. On first sight it seems that
1) their preffered engine seems to be XeTeX, not maintained anymore
2) they claim not to clutter working directory, you already have that
   if you use lyx - in the sense that all temps are saved separately from
   .lyx files.
3) they claim to download latex packages on demand instead of full
   texlive install. You can get that with MikTeX automatically or
   (untested) you might get that with texlive via texliveonfly.

As such I do not see much of addon value for lyx.

I have solved this problem: The source was the default overlay configuration in
my preamble. For the slide containing the Bibliography, I changed it to <1>,
and the duplication problem has been solved, but now I have another problem:
all references point to one of the documents I cite.

FTI: I use natbib andthe authordate3 style

I tried to locate the problem by hand:

0/ I delete AUX and bbl files (also the blg one)
1/ I pdflatex the first time: no strange errors on the logs, I get the standard
"Package natbib Warning: Citation `XXX' on page 70 undefined on input line
 377 errors and Package natbib Warning: There were undefined citations..
The AUX file contains:
\citation{Binmore99}
\citation{Giraud00}
\citation{Umbhauer02}
and also \bibcite{} commands for them (is this normal?)

2/ I run bibtex: no errors in the blg and the bbl contains the correct
references
3/ I run pdflatex again:
Now I continue to have the citation commands but all bibcite commands point to
the same reference:
\bibcite{Binmore99}{{1}{1999}{{Binmore}}{{}}}
\bibcite{Giraud00}{{2}{1999}{{Binmore}}{{}}}
\bibcite{Umbhauer02}{{3}{1999}{{Binmore}}{{}}}

and I only get this reference in the PDF of course, instead of full reference
set.

I am quite perplexed now about the potential origin of this problem and I am a
rather obsessive guy :)

Have you met this problem or do you have any idea about it?

FYI information: when I switch the presentation to beamer Koma script document
class, the references are compiled correctly.

My preamble contains (but I have been using it for some time in other
documents, but not very recently):

\mode
{
\usetheme{Warsaw}
\usecolortheme{lily}
\setbeamercovered{invisible}
\setbeamertemplate{navigation symbols}{}
}
\beamerdefaultoverlayspecification{<+->}
\AtBeginSection[]
{
\begin{frame}
\frametitle{Sections :}
\tableofcontents[currentsection]
\end{frame}
}

and the slides with references and the bibliography have the overlay
specification <1> in Lyx.

AUX file problems.

2024-07-21 Thread Murat Yildizoglu
Dear friends,

I am importing a LaTeX file from an old LyX file after Claude translated it to
English from French (a very good translation of all text in French while
preserving the LaTeX instructions).

The LaTeX file looks good and I can typeset it manually with pdflatex. But, I
want to re-edit it in LyX, and I am meeting a problem with the last version of
LyX 2.4.1 and MacTeX 2024 (they are not necessarily the culprit but I have just
updated them before doing these operations so they may be relevant in my
problem):

When I compile my imported file, some elements get duplicated in the LaTeX file
in the temp folder. In particular, I find duplicated references and bibdata and
bibstyle commands in the AUX file. My LyX file has only one bibliography field
at the end of the document. Latex generates warnings about these duplications
but when I click « Show the output anyway », I get a readable PDF.

Do you know why compilation duplicates (in fact, triplicates) these elements in
the AUX file?

Thank you very much!

Dear Hung-Tzu,

Thanks for the files. I can confirm that I observe hangs when
scrolling with LyX 2.4.1 and that the performance is much much better

Running under a profiler reveals that the problem is related to the

So the good news is that these "hang" events should disappear if you

You may try to open it on LibreOffice and save as odt, then import
into LyX. LibreOffice uses the libwpd library that, it seems, offer
support for such an old format:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/DLP/Libraries#Import_Libraries
https://libwpd.sourceforge.net/features.html

Or open in LibreOffice and export as LaTeX.

There is also this:

https://ctan.org/pkg/wp2latex

I used it to convert quite a lot some years ago.

None of these are flawless. It depends a lot on the complexity of the
document.

I think it would not be hard to compile itself, rather to get all the
dependencies for ARM64. Like netbpm, unoconv, rsvg-convert and all the
runtime dll files which are delivered with lyx.
To cross compile there is just a workload in Visual Studio for cross
compiling to ARM64 Windows, doesn't seem too hard tbh.

The Windows ARM support in Qt (https://doc.qt.io/qt-6/windows.html) is

With upcoming Qt 6.8, Windows on ARM will one of the standard desktop

I would guess it could even be done on Linux. I used to build the

Don't know, I don't have an ARM machine here to try. But if all would go

The spell checkers have their own files, yes.

However, LyX also stores personal word lists under the name
pwl_.dict (I am not sure it is used by all spell checker
backends, but it is at least by aspell, hunspell and enchant).

These files are located in your user directory (see Help > About LyX
for where this is).

On some OSes (Mac I think), each major version has its own user
directory (with a version suffix). You might find your files in the one
of 2.3 and then copy them to the 2.4 directory.

Ideally, these files should be copied over by the installers on

I must say I'm surprised, but that's great! If I remember correctly, the
kudos should go to pandoc, which LyX simply calls to convert to LaTeX
(and then LyX does the subsequent conversion from LaTeX to LyX format).

The first question is going to be what OS you use.

LyX does not handle this itself. Rather, it is using some other backend
spellchecker, like Hunspell (also used by Chrome, Firefox, LibreOffice,
etc). If you look under Tools> Preferences> Language Settings>
Spellchecker, you can find out what spell checker is being used. Then
try searching the web for info on where the personal dictionary is stored.

irrespective of whether the \cite command is clicked before or not. This
phenomenon also happens exclusively for 2.4 series. I have not
experienced this in version 2.3.7.

The example of "large" that we had was 1000+ authors, and it caused a
crash of the whole session for the reporter.

To see whether 10 authors is large, could you try to remove those
particular entries from the bibtex file and see whether this helps?

P.S. One more thing that I just noticed. The freeze of the main window
does not occur exclusively for scrolling. It can also be triggered when
clicking an item on the menu bar (e.g. File). The drop-down menu would
freeze for a few seconds and go back to normal. Whether the main
window/menu freeze or the freeze of the citation window occurs depends
on the file (complexity). For a small/simple file (~700 words) with the
same bibtex library (and some cited references with many authors) these
do not happen.

Is it a file that you can share with me? You can try to anonymize it using
  Command-x buffer-anonymize

Hope this helps,

I just had the misfortune to need to convert from a docx file, which

Location of personal dictionary

2024-07-15 Thread Matthias Schmidt
I have just updated my LyX from 2.3.8 to 2.4.1. In the process, my personal
dictionary that I have built up over time in LyX 2.3 does not seem to have been
transferred to Lyx 2.4.

I think I can copy this personal dictionary from LyX 2.3 to LyX 2.4, but I
don't know where to find it.

My question: Does anyone know where this personal dictionary is stored in LyX

Could you make the two .conf files available so that we can compare

Hi,

There is no 2.4.1 format, but only a 2.4 one. We try to guarantee that
updating to a new minor version is safe. All these versions should
read/write the same files.

The file format changes at each major version. The last minor version of
each series (2.3.8 now) has code to read files produced by the next
major series (2.4.x currently).

Hope this helps.

The thing here is that starting from version 6.5 Qt "supports" dark theme
by following your system theme and starting from version 6.7 Qt even uses
the ui style "windows11" by default which (also) has a dark theme. So you
end up with that style and dark theme if your system is set to dark. You
can avoid it by choosing a different ui style, which does not have a dark
theme, in the preferences -> user interface -> user interface style. The
only style *without* dark theme is "windowsvista" though, it was the
default style on Windows in Qt versions pre 6.7. I usually compile with the
newest Qt version for Windows, so LyX 2.4.0 and newer uses Qt version 6.7
and newer so that is why you get the dark theme now.

We are proud to announce the release LyX 2.4.1, the first maintenance
release in the 2.4.x series.

We have fixed a number of bugs in this version. Most of these are minor,
but there was one crash when deleting rows or columns from a table that has
been fixed. There have also been some improvements to tab management. See
the complete list of updates and improvements below for more.

You can download LyX 2.4.1 from https://www.lyx.org/Download.

If you have trouble using LyX or have a question, consult the
documentation that comes with LyX (under Help) and the LyX wiki, which you
will find at https://wiki.lyx.org/. You can also send email to the LyX
users'
list (lyx-users at lists.lyx.org). Bugs can be reported on our bug tracker
(https://www.lyx.org/trac/) or by writing the developers' list (lyx-devel at
lists.lyx.org).

This file describes what has been done in the preparation of LyX 2.4.1.
All comments are welcome.

I think so, but even if technically possible I wouldn't recommend it.
Longer explanation: 2.3.8 has code ("lyx2lyx") to convert 2.4.x files
back into 2.3.x file format. So yes, you should be able to open them,
and please let us know if there is any problem if you do so because that
could be a bug. That said, if you continually change between 2.4.x and
2.3.8, you'll be doing a lot of conversions, and there's a good chance
something could go wrong. My recommendation would be to just use 2.3.8
and wait until you (and your coauthors) are ready to upgrade everything
to 2.4.x.

change the colors, but it took me to long, so I keep the default values.

You can change the color of the text and the background, but get
problems with rest like marks, inserts and so on. Sometimes those
"extras" are barely readable on a bright background.

Can I install both LyX 2.4.1 and 2.3.8 simultaneously on my Windows laptop
with TeXLive 2023? If I edit and save a file using LyX 2.4.1 will it still
be viewable and editable using 2.3.8?

LyX 2.4.1 Released

2024-07-04 Thread Richard Kimberly Heck

The LyX team.
https://www.lyx.org

This file describes what has been done in the preparation of LyX 2.4.1.
All comments are welcome.

Thanks, this was helpful. This is a small glitch which will be fixed
(again, only in LyX 2.4.2).

In the meantime, you can either ignore the error or, to get rid of it,
uncheck "use non-TeX fonts" in the MacrosStandard.lyx file, then set
the encoding to "Unicode (utf8)" rather than "Traditional (auto-
selected)" (as advised in my first mail), then check use-non-tex fonts
again.

The problem here is that LyX checks for the encoding also in the
XeTeX/LuaTeX case where it actually shouldn't (since these file are
always utf8 in the output).

A word of explanation: all .lyx files are encoded in utf8. The encoding
you can chose is the one of the generated LaTeX file. When using a child
document, the master and the child should use the same encoding.

Note, though, that if you have other files which include this document,
and these file have traditional encoding, you will now get a warning
with those to the opposite direction.

An alternative fix (which would avoid the latter) would be to set the
Encoding of your master file from "Unicode (utf8)" to "Traditional
(auto-selected)". Or if you want to have both options, store a copy of
the MacrosStandard.lyx file with utf8 encoding under a different name.

chime in with ideas).

> and regarding what you've written here:

This is puzzling. The code that triggers this dialog is _in_ the
document settings dialog.

But I think I understand now that this can be accessed even if the
dialog is not open. I will push what I think is a fix, but as LyX 2.4.1
has already been built, this will make its debut only in LyX 2.4.2.

Meanwhile, if you can come up with a somewhat reliable recipe to
reproduce this behavior, this would be highly helpful (as I cannot
reproduce it myself).

Thanks,

But you have the document settings dialog open with unapplied changes,
right?

The purpose of the message is to make you aware if you switch documents

Hello,
ever since I updated to 2.4 I get this pop-up when changing tabs in my
documents (old files that I created before 2.4 and new ones as well)
[image: image.png]
but I don't have any unsaved changes in the documents, and there are always
2 of those pop-ups, when I click on the "switch back" twice it just brings
me to the previous tab, and saving again does not change anything, and if I
click twice on "Dismiss changes" then nothing happens.

internally, and so support the H option
which should enable the use of that environment inside
