Basic Question on the elsarticle.lyx template regarding the template specific label

2016-02-08 Thread Henry Leung
Hi,

I am new to LyX and has no latex experience. I went through introduction
and the tutorial and that's all I know before I try out the different
template (Yes, I can't wait with the new excitement)

I am trying to write paper using the elsarticle.lyx template and was
confused by the "author label", "author footnote label" and the like. I
would like to know how to create them when I am writing paper in lyx as I
need them. Currently I can only copy and paste these label and change the
content in it for new author, and the corresponding "author footnote
label". All I understand is they are not the regular label or footnote
that was introduced in the tutorial. Are they template (or document class)
specific? I tried to google the answer as well as looking into the help
file, but I could not find any mention of such (I must admit I did not go
through every single one of them and I simple used the find function with
keyword like "author label")

Thank you in advance for answering this basic question.

Regards,
Henry.

Don't do that! If you do, you won't find any error and you're likely to
screw up your TeX.

Please listen to what others have tried to tell you, and try to find out
where your error is.

It is not TeX's fault, for sure! Although one might blame it for obscure
error messages dating back to the dark ages of mainframes, VaXen etc...

Good luck - Bon chance!

My family uses 1.3.6 on three Ubuntu 6.06 LTS boxes for books, articles,
reports, Broadway, and classroom materials. I've home built 1.5.2 for
Ubuntu Feisty for testing. Have not decided to upgrade the rest yet but
will test 1.5.3 soon.

An open-source project that I work with, the Enhanced Machine Controller
also uses 1.3.6 extensively for documentation. Lyx files are included
in the CVS for the project. We offer the option of automatic document
preparation during make and provide automated updates if changes are
made to the lyx code for the developer versions of documents on our

stack of HTML.

The curious can browse/download at http://www.linuxcnc.org/docs/devel/.

Thanks to all for a great product, great service, and really quick help.

I'm creating a 10x10 table. The first column is filled with small
images. It is set to zero width. The other columns are all set to fixed
width and have text wrapped. When the the image is inserted it creates
space at the top of the row and pushes down the text in the other
cells. The images are sized to fit inside a cell without creating
additional space. What can I do to minimize the affect of inserting
these images.

Ah,
the dash is literaly put in, not a math thing.
What you want, is on the page you want to restart the page counting.
insert an ERT, on the page you want to be numbered 1, and in the ERT
put:

\setcounter{page}{1}

but it didn't subtract 15 from the document page number Well, I
tried!

When I use the Author field, LyX won't wrap author names or allow me to

I would be deeply indebted to anyone who could supply pointers toward a

style files not working

2005-01-05 Thread Martin Henry H. Stevens
LyX 1.3.5 on Mac OS 10.3.6
I am relatively new to LyX and even less familiar with the hardcore
stuff (LaTex). I have a consistent problem in using style files in
BibTex, wherein I select an (author, year) format and it doesn't
translate into ps or pdf properly.

In a document, I successfully included my .bib file and a style file. I
use the menu (Insert:Citation reference...) to include a citation
reference. The math number formats (e.g., [1],[23]) seem to work fine.
However, other styles do not.

Example:
What I would like to see:
...an open question (Hairston et al. 1960).
LyX code
...an open question [Hairston1960]. [where Hairston1960 is my BibTex
key, and it shows up in a gray box].

PDF
...an open question [Hairston et al. (1960) Hairston, Smith, and
Slobodkin]. [with square brackets instead of parentheses, and with
extra names and parentheses inside the brackets]

In addition, the citations sometimes stick out into the margin.
Any suggestions or links or anything is welcome.
Thanks,
Hank

Does anyone use LyX right out of the box (or download) without all the
tweaking? If so, to what use are you putting it?
We've used LyX for years right out of the box and are pleased with the
results. Used for User, Integrator, and Developer handbooks (about 300
pages) for an open source machine control project at sourceforge. Have
distributed pdf and html versions without serious problems and have seen
orders of magnitude advance in ease of operation and quality of product
over the years. Thanks to each developer for a fine product.

Centering graphics in float

2004-11-16 Thread Martin Henry H. Stevens
LyX 1.3.5 on Mac OS 10.3.6
All my figures in LyX are positioned on the left margin. Is there a
reason for this, and how would I get LyX to center them horizontally?
(I would rather wrap, but that doesn't seem to work too well!)
Thanks,
Hank

Hank,
The platform shouldn't matter. Place the cursor to the left of the

I adding a new converter in LyX/Preferences/Converter,

error loading pdf images

2004-11-01 Thread Martin Henry H. Stevens
I am running Mac OS 10.3.5 and LyX 1.3.5.
I get an error when I try to incorporate a pdf image into a LyX file.
In place of the image it states

Error converting to loadable format.
The error message I get when trying to convert to postscript reads
LaTeX Error: File
`/tmp/lyx_tmpdir10732GLmAp/lyx_tmpbuf0/_Users_Hank_Document
 ..._Users_Hank_Documents_671_Classes_Rplots}
I could not locate the file with any of these extensions:
.eps,.ps,.eps.gz,.ps.gz,.eps.Z
Try typing return to proceed.
If that doesn't work, type X return to quit.

I don't know how to get LyX to load pdf images. (It seems to work fine
on another Mac machine - my laptop).
Any thought would be very appreciated.

Although I am a newbie also, I have a nice, flexible LyX letterhead. I suggest
you skip the letter class because only a guru can customize it. Letter class
was apparently designed to allow one to quickly change the mailing address

not designed for an office that needs the ability to change the elements of
the letter.

Try the article class and start with a blank. Put your fancy stuff at the top.
Then you can try the right address and address environments, which are
included in the article class, for your addresses. I think these are the
aspects of the letter class that are of the greatest utility for most users.
(The right address environment is especially clever.)

Next you can add your own salutation, text area, closing, cc, P.S., etc. and
make the form into a template. With this template it should be relatively
easy to add ad hoc stuff you need from time to time about reference numbers,
mailing instructions, and the like.

One thing about the letter class that we are supposed to love is the automatic
provision of the date. With the article class, you will have to provide your
own date. But in my shop, I want my dates to stay put.

Good luck!

problem. Try to reinstall the old version 0.11.x.
That's all I can help you.

Cygwin Lyx 1.3.1 crash

2003-10-22 Thread Henry Pfister
I've been using this the Cygwin port of Lyx 1.3.1 with XFree86
for some time now and it has been working fairly well.

Recently, I wanted installed a few new components to my Cygwin
system and I it updated me to XFree86 4.3. That's when the trouble
began, and the Cygwin setup program no longer offers the old version
4.2. Also XFig requires the new 4.3 version.
Basically, Lyx crashes whenever it tries to display a math character
such as \pi . The message it gives is
BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation) id: 8388792

This could be a very simple font or setup problem, but I've tried
resinatlling everything multiple times in different orders to no avail.
I've also tried turning all dbg levels from 5-10 and that's still the
only message I get. Does this sound familar to anyone and/or give
a hint where the problem is?
I've included the file generating by cygcheck -s just in case
that helps.
Thanks,
Henry Pfister

Could you explain this to me? Right now, Lyx is compatible with the Qt
toolkit
for unix (which is under the GPL). What prevents a single Lyx developer
from
buying the single user windows Qt toolkit from Trolltech for $1500, and
compiling
and releasing (not selling) the resulting binary? If the Qt library is
so portable, the
necessary changes for cygwin compatibility should be minor and could be
incorporated
into the main source tree. Then the Lyx Qt developer might have very
little work
besides compiling each new release.

It sounds like there are legal issues in the way, but I think it might
be possible to raise
the $1500 from Lyx users otherwise.

Isn't the LyX founder Matthias Ettrich able to underwrite a QT3 licence? I
heared he's working for Trolltech.

Given that (unfortunately) technically the resulting product is illegal,
I can't see that happening.

Then the "Lyx Qt" developer might have very
little work
besides compiling each new release.

It sounds like there are legal issues in the way, but I think it might
be possible to raise
the $1500 from Lyx users otherwise.

Re: .ps from Mac in LyX

1999-09-01 Thread Henry J. P. Smith

Not too sure about it as you don't say which system you are using for LyX
but I guess it is Unix/Linux. If so, I suspect it is due to the different
format that Mac and Unix use for text files like PS files. I guess you
need to convert them to Unix format. If you have already done this, then
try to look at the files in a text editor. In my experience transferring
MAC RTF files to Unix systems frequently adds extraneous garbage at the
beginning and end. You may have the same problem, if your file format is
ok.

to get rid of the weird mac end-of-lines.

The files look OK in ghostview. HOWEVER they just create a string of
errors if I try to include them in a LyX document. Does anyone have any
guesses what is wrong and how to fix?

My guess is that the problem has to do with the line:
 %%BoundingBox: ? ? ? ?
But I don't know how to fix it.

Looked at you included file (also did not see that!) and front and end of
file seem ok to me. So my suspicion is not founded, Not enough of a PS

you could comment it out and try it or just put in some generic numbers to
see what happens. Hopefully someone else can provide more info. Again
sorry for being too quick onthe trigger with my first post.

Theorems and Conjectures

1999-08-19 Thread Henry Pfister

I am writing a technical paper that will
have some theorems and conjectures in it. I like
the standard "article" style the best, and would like
to use it. But it does not support Lyx friendly
Theorems and Conjectures by default. I can force
it with latex parts, but it won't be WSIWYM.
On the other hand, I don't like the style
of "amsart" articles. But they support standard
theorem and conjectures styles. I've tried editing
the premable to make this style look like the standard
"article", but there are many things to change.
Does anybody have a standard "article" type
style that includes Lyx style theorems? Is it easy
to add these things to Lyx. I know how to add them
to latex.
Or does anybody have a style file that makes
"amsart" look like "article"?
Thanks for your help.
