Re: LyX 1.3.5 for Win32 - install error
First, I checked textclass.lst: it's there and non-zero. Second, I replace sed. Third, I type configure at the c:\lyx32\share\lyx> DOS prompt and get: a lot of text and then "configure: error: cannot find chkconfig.ltx script" This makes me think I have an error in my PATH statment. (I think one is linked from the Wiki; if not, you can get it from Sourceforge, as part of the GnuWin project.) Once you have a good sed in place, try running the configuration script (...\share\configure.bat) from a DOS prompt. See if a non-empty textclass.lst is produced. Re: LyX 1.3.5 for Win32 - install error
I get the same error if I try to run lyx from the console command (I had tried this previously and just to make sure, I tried again). It appears that the subfolders are write enabled for everyone. Any other suggestions? Kent OK if that works, assure that the installation folder of LyX and all subfolders have write permissions for "everybody". If this is not the case, you have to reconfigure LyX again after adjusting the permissions. At last you can run LyX by the console command lyx -dbg 3 to have an extra debug window. Now call Edit -> Reconfigure and look what happens in the debug window. regards Uwe

LyX 1.3.5 for Win32 - install error
I am having some difficulties getting LyX 1.3.5 for Win32 to start. When I attempt to execute lyx.exe I get a dialog box with the following text: LyX wasn't able to find any layout description! Check the contents of the file "textclass.lst" Sorry, has to exit :-( A reinstall did not make this problem go away. What do I need to check for to get this working? Kent Kostuk
PDF margin growth
I have noticed that when I create a PDF and thend print it the margins are larger (and consequently the text is smaller) than if I printed the document directly. I don't have this problem when I create and then print a PS file. This is not strictly a LyX problem, as I have noticed this when I create the PDF from a PS at the command line. Is thers some command line parameter that I need to be using to correct this? Kent
Anyone with experience using ascelike.cls?
I am formatting a document for a journal submission using ascelike.cls. The problem is I have no experience using a .cls that didn't come as part of my LyX install before. I need some help making this work. I have setup a basic .layout and it is sort of working. I am able to generate a DVI that is close, but am having a few problems. 1. I can't get the author and contact information to show. When I look in the cls file there is command \author{ \thanks{ }} which I am trying to use. When I use it, nothing is displayed (although the Author Environment works within LyX - but no "thanks" component). 2. The bibliography doesn't show anymore. I have ascelike.bst and a .bib file but nothing shows. I had the paper working with \usepackage{natbib} and the above two files, but once I started using the .cls file the bibliography doesn't show anymore. Also, the reference numbers have been replaced by question marks. 3. The figures and tables don't show up in the dvi. I am obviously doing something wrong because the figures and tables are no longer being displayed. The are fine in the LyX file and if I use a different layout they work. I have some other problems, but if someone could provide me with some insight on these, I am thinking (hoping?) I can make some progress with the others on my own. Thanks Kent Kostuk

Re: Tables
When cutting and pasting from gnumeric, I would create a table in LyX that was the exact dimensions (i.e. same number of rows and columns) of what I was trying to paste and didn't seem to have any troubles. Just in case someone else has the same problem as I had, here is the solution for adding the prefatory sections to the table of contents. In ERT add the following to the beginning of the section \addcontentsline{toc}{chapter}{ABSTRACT} The above adds the abstract (in uppercase) to my table of contents. Controlling figure and table placement
Before I ask my question I want to thank everyone that has helped me directly by answering my questions, or indirectly by asking (and solving) my questions before I get a chance to ask them. I am nearing the end of my graduate school exisitence - I am in the last revision of the PhD thesis before submitting it to my committee. I have used Figure and Table floats throughout. There are times when the text refers to a figure or table after it is mentioned in the text. Is there a way to get these to "show up" after they are mentioned? I know what I am trying to do is in contrast to the overall philosphy of LaTex/LyX but that argument is not the hill I want to die on at this late stage in the game. In case you haven't guessed this is a request coming from my supervisor, and in his defence, it is entirely reasonable; this was the way I was taught to put together a technical document. Re: lyx install on a win 2000 machine
That was an excellent suggestion. Just in case others are having, or will run into this problem in the future I will document my process. My first step was to check to see if the problem was in my bst file. It appears that is the case. I changed the bst that I reference to plain and I was able to find the typo in one of my citations that was causing the problem. I then exported to a pdf file again and it worked. I went back to change the texify -p back to pdflatex to speed things up. Again, it still works. So it appears that the problem is in my bst file. Since this version of LyX is only to allow me to work when I am away from my desk, having the references appear wrong when I am working on the road is not the end of the world. The remaining problem though is that if I include an eps I get an error. In fact the error message says the problem is in the citation list but when I delete the eps, generating the pdf is problem free. Re: lyx install on a win 2000 machine
That doesn't seem to be the problem. I opened the bib file in Notepad and everything looked correct. I then saved it just in case and then tried exporting the file again and the problem still exists. lyx install on a win 2000 machine
I am extremely happy with my LyX install on a Win2000 laptop. It has gone almost as smoothly as possible. The only problem I am having is with bibtex stuff. When I try to export a PDF file I get one error box with a bunch of lines in it say something like "Warning: Citation 'some citation' on page 4 undefined on input" I don't understand why this is happening. I have my bst in the same director as my lyx file. The dir structures are essentially the same as on my Linux system where the lyx files were originall created. Does anyone have any pointers? Thanks Kent Kostuk [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: Export a PDF file
I opened the file with a PDF and PS extension in Ghostview and it is fine (although the ouput is pretty rough looking considering the font was set as pslatex). But if I try to convert it to a pdf Ghostview crashes. I think you are right about it being a postscript file. Here is the start of the file. %!PS-Adobe-3.0 %%Pages: (atend) %%BoundingBox: 113 42 545 718 %%HiResBoundingBox: 113.10 42.30 545.00 717.60 %... %%Creator: GNU Ghostscript 550 (pswrite) %%CreationDate: 2001/11/12 23:15:57 %%DocumentData: Clean7Bit %%LanguageLevel: 2 %%EndComments %%BeginProlog I am going to have to try this again on my home linux box to see if I can repeat the process. Export a PDF file
I was just wondering what is the most consistent way to generate a PDF document that is 100% readable by someone using Windows and Adobe Acrobat? I find that it is hit and miss when I generate a PDF from within LyX. For instance I exported a document last night and find that I can only view it using Ghostview on my windows machine here at work. When I try to open the document in Acrobat I get the error "file does not start with %PDF-" Kent Kostuk [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Still having troubles with my bibliography
I am moving forward, but I am still a long way from making this work. I have attached sample files with the hope that someone will take a look at them. I have attached a lyx file, 2 different bib files and a bst file. The bst I created using makebst.tex. I have created one citation reference in the lyx file. What I get when I run the DVI preview is [?] and no list of references. I want my references to look like this (Howard 1960). Or possibly, blah, blah, yakety yak by Howard. (1960). With the Bibliography to follow this format. Howard, R.A. 1960. Dynamic programming and Markov processes. M.I.T. Press. Cambridge, MA. So, possibly I have been asking the wrong question. Does anyone know of a bst that will do the job for me, or is rolling my own the solution? Thanks Kent Kostuk #LyX 1.1 created this file. Creating a new bib style
I just created a new bib style file use makebst.tex but I getting nothing but errors from within Lyx. I recall that you have to somehow register new bst files with tex. Is this true or am I just imagining things. I am having a terrible time getting this bibtex stuff to work on anything other than the original bst files. Unfortunately none of these in the standard installation get the job done. Kent Kostuk

Weird PDF results
This isn't really a Lyx problem but I am just wondering if anyone has observed this behaviour before. I created a PDF of a chapter of my thesis for my supervisor. I had used the View-pdflatex and then saved the file. I mailed it to my win95 machine and viewed it in Adobe Acrobat to verify that everything looked fine. It looked great. I then printed it to my HP4MV and midway through the document alternate characters start showing up. I then send it to the HP4MV again but this time I send it to the instance where it is configured as a Postcript printer (it is autosensing so that shouldn't really be an issue). This time it is flawless. I then went back to my Linux box and use the export command to generate PDFs. I use PDF, pdflatex, and PS. The first two look pretty rough in Acrobat on the PC but look fine on paper. The ps file wouldn't work in ghostview so I had to convert it on the Linux box to a PDF and again, it looked rough but printed ok. So, I guess the questions I have are: 1) Has anyone seen this before? 2) Is there a solution, or just a work around? 3) What method do you folks use to generate PDFs for others to view? Thanks Kent Kostuk
Bibliography neophyte
I am working on my dissertation and assemblying my bibliography. I need a format similar to this. Howard., R. 1960. Dynamic Programming and Markov Processes. M.I.T. Press. Cambridge, MA. I can not find a BibTex style that is close to that in my present set up. A harvard.sty looks close, but how do I install it? I was able to track down a copy harvard.sty but where do I install it and how do I get the system to recognize it? Where can I find other bibtex .bst files? I am still in the neophyte stage, but I am at least at the point where I know enough to ask a question. Thanks Kent Kostuk [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: LyX
Wouldn't "lick" (LyX) be consistent with "tech" (TeX) > We pronounce TeX as "tech", so consistency would say LyX is "like". >
Figure cross reference.
I can not see to get a figure cross reference working. I have used a figure float. Immediately after the word 'Figure:' I hit enter and insert the figure. I then add the figure text. I have tried placing the label in the figure text (beginning and end) and between the figure and 'Figure:' I then insert a cross reference in a paragraph Regardless of the placement I just get a '??' in my text. When I go to the list of cross references and highlight the label text and press the 'Go To' button I get a message that the reference can not be found. What am I doing wrong? Kent Kostuk [EMAIL PROTECTED]
bibtex example
This is a bit off topic, but it I am trying to get some bibliographic stuff into a LyX document. Does anyone have a bibtex example with a conference proceedings? In particular I am trying to save the proceedings using @proceedings, and then refer to it with @inproceedings. Kent Kostuk [EMAIL PROTECTED]
error on startup
Thanks to all for helping track down my lyx file. Now, when I try to start up lyx I get the following error: /usr/libexec/ld.so: lyx: libintl.so.1.0: no such file or directory Any ideas on what this is? I just did a google search and found a reference to gettext. Is this correct? I thought I would ask before flailing aimlessly. Kent Kostuk [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Can't find LyX installation
This is a bit embarrassing but I keep telling myself...it's ok, you are new to BSDI can't find where I installed LyX. I am using OpenBSD and could not install LyX on my laptop via the ports process: I did not have enough drive space. I then downloaded the binaries and used pkg_add to install all the necessary files. After a few trials and tribulations I got a successful (no error messages) installation. But now I can't get it to run. From within X-windows I type lyx and the system says it can't find the file. If I do man lyx the man pages come up. If I do a pkg_info on the lyx file I get some information but nothing that tells me the absolute path of where the file is. I get a few relative paths but I can't track anything down. So, my question is, where/how would I find where I installed lyx? Kent Kostuk [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Including Latex style file
I have a style file that follows my university's standard layout, and can't figure out how to include include it in Lyx. I found reference to a style file in the LyX and the LaTeX preamble section of the User's Guide but I couldn't make out where to install the file. Kent Kostuk [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Outline running past bottom of the page
As I mentioned before. The file that I have attached runs into the footer section of some pages. I didn't recall doing anything out of the ordinary, but given I am still experimenting there is always the chance I took a wrong turn somewhere. Kent [EMAIL PROTECTED] Chapter_1_b_revised.lyx
Outline running past bottom of the page
I am just starting to get my feet wet with LyX so I can use it for my dissertation. I have worked through an outline and when printing it, the outline proceeds into the footer region of the page (ie over the page numbering) and off the page. This does not happen on all of the pages. There does not appear to be a pattern for this behaviour. I am using Caldera OpenLinux 2.4, LyX version 1.16fix2, and an HP 4MV printer. Kent Kostuk [EMAIL PROTECTED]
