Hi all,

I got a bit further, I found a workaround. If I export the file twice in a row
the page numbering gets right. For some reason my document is too complex and
needs one more go before the index files are right. Should I report this as a
bug?

Hi,

I am wondering if anyone has seen this before and can help me to overcome.

I have a master document containing many Child documents and branches and in
ERT frontmatter and mainmatter. If I generate a pdf from this document I get a
nice document with roman numbers for the frontmatter, plainpages for the part
pages and chappg numbering on the chapter pages. This numbering is also visible
in acroread as it is printed on the pages, except for the part pages where
ordinary page numbering is used.

The funny thing which happens is that when I include this master document in
another document with the sole purpose of activating branches the roman
numbering breaks in the middle of the multipage index to normal numbers and the
chappg numbering in the acroread bottom bar becomes one chapter ahead.

Does anyone have a clue on why this is happening? Below my .layout file which
might be interesting for other people as well.

Regards,

Maarten

RE: LyX/Mac 1.4.1 Not Loading Figures

2006-06-08 Thread Sanders, Maarten \(M.J.L.\)

I have run in to image conversion trouble many times due to this bug in
ESPGS-8.15 http://www.cups.org/espgs/str.php?L1338+P0+S1+C0+I10+E0+Q . I
have seen many distro's including a broken version of espgs, possibly it
is also of influence in your case. Did you run any upgrades on other
parts of your system?

kind regards,

Maarten

Another memoir question

2006-05-30 Thread Sanders, Maarten \(M.J.L.\)

Hi,

I am currently creating my own layout based on memoir.layout. When I use
this layout I see the following messages in a teminal window from which
I fired LyX:

New counter already exists: part
New counter already exists: chapter
New counter already exists: section
.

.
New counter already exists: equation

Since this even happens when my layout file is a simple as:

# comment
#  \DeclareLaTeXClass[memoir]{memoir in my style}
# comment
# comment

Input memoir.layout

I wonder if it is a bug. In any case it does not (yet) break anything
for me.

memoir class with index works on Miktex, not in tetex. Why?

2006-05-29 Thread Sanders, Maarten \(M.J.L.\)

Hi,

I am trying to find why things work in Miktex (windows) but refuse to
work in tetex (Linux, Slackware 10.2).

I get an error in Linux:

LaTeX Error: Command \see already defined.
LaTeX Error: Command \printindex already defined.

I have noticed that when I export to a latex file and comment
\usepackage{makeidx} and run a normal latex sequence (latex, makeindex,
latex, latex) things work fine. See the source of a sample lyx file
below. It looks like (my??) memoir class on linux already has some
definitions.

On windows LyX work fine out of the box.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do get things working from lyx
directly?

Trouble with index in 1.4.1 and memoir classs

2006-05-25 Thread Sanders, Maarten \(M.J.L.\)

Hi,

Has anyone noticed that when using memoir class in 1.4.1 (I understood from a
colleague it was allright in 1.4.0) inserting an index gives latex errors (see
part of the log below)?

I am running 1.4.1 on a stock slackware 10.2 system with tetex 3.0.

Reproducing the error is simple: create a small memoir class do. insert a few
index entries and put an index in the document and the error is there. I can
reproduce the error on two different computers. Can someone confirm this error
is bug? After confirmation I will file a bug report.

Kind regards,

Maarten

branch feature

2006-04-15 Thread Sanders, Maarten \(M.J.L.\)
Hi,

We use a lot of branches in modular end user manuals for our equipment. Does
anyone have an approach on dealing with not branches? E.g., the piece of text
applies to every piece of equipment, except for no. 32. As you can imagine it
is a bit tedious to repeat the same text in the other 31 branches.

If there is no approach, are there any development ideas in this direction?
Thinking of that, a single chunk of text that can be used for 'n' branches
would be nice as well.

Any comments?

Maarten

We use a lot of branches in modular end user manuals for our equipment. Does
anyone have an approach on dealing with not branches? E.g., the piece of text
applies to every piece of equipment, except for no. 32. As you can imagine it
is a bit tedious to repeat the same text in the other 31 branches.

If there is no approach, are there any development ideas in this direction?
Thinking of that, a single chunk of text that can be used for 'n' branches
would be nice as well.

Any comments?

Enrico,

It works. Still I do wonder what the messages about the fonts mean. The
fonts are installed in my texmf directory. Should the commandline
options work as well?

Ah! In my first cursory glance I was missing this. Now it is clear what
is happening. When a path contains spaces, LyX quotes it by \string and
the script wasn't expecting that :(

Please, find attached the updated latex and pdflatex scripts to be

Indeed. But, as I already said, it needs to be reviewed. I was missing

2006-03-21 Thread Sanders, Maarten \(M.J.L.\)
Enrico,

Sorry about the previous message. Below is the script as I copy-pasted
it. The prog=latex.exe part was on the previous line (thus commented)
and at first not recognized by me to be part of the script.

I tried the corrected script but still it doesn't work. I get an error
box in lyx with in the upper part:

LaTeX error: Missing \begin{document}.[]
LateX error: File `images/logo.eps' not found.[]
Etc.

And in the lower part:

You're in trouble here. Try typingto proceed.
If that doesn't work, type X to quit.

As well as in the cygwin window:

Path of images in .layout and lyx1.4 on cygwin

2006-03-20 Thread Sanders, Maarten \(M.J.L.\)
Hi,

My cygwin lyx 1.4, with miktex works like a charm. Only one feature I
have working in Lyx on linux isn't working and I cannot get it to work
properly:

In my company.layout file I have:
=
\pagestyle{fancy}
\newsavebox{\oordlogo}

\renewcommand{\footrulewidth}{0.5pt}
\renewcommand{\headrulewidth}{0.5pt}

\lhead{}
\chead{}
\rhead{\includegraphics[width=15mm]{images/logo.eps}}

This returns:

LaTex Error: File `images/logo.eps' not found.[]

When I ask for a dvi or ps2pdf view.

I have tried hardcoding the path in the layout file but for some reason
the file cannot be found. If I run 'by hand':

lyx -e mydoc.lyx
latex mydoc.tex
I get a DVI file that holds the image.

Anyone a suggestion?

2005-12-22 Thread Sanders, Maarten (M.J.L.)
Paul,

I have had a similar error on a mandrake 2005 system, though with
ps2pdf. It turned out to be a problem with graphics and the ghostscript
version. After I installed mandrake rpm ghostscript-8.15-16mdk.i586.rpm
instead of 8.15-22 the problem was gone.

Hope this gives you some pointers,

This one is for the LaTeX gurus in the group:

I have 18 Beamer presentations generated the usual way
 (created in LyX,
output using pdflatex). To service a student request sigh,
 I loaded
each one into Acrobat Pro 7 and used the menu option to enable
commenting by Acrobat Reader. This leads Acrobat Pro to do arcane
things (measured by a progress bar) and then write out a
 modified copy
 of the file.

On 14 files, this worked fine; on four, it aborted midway
 with an error
message that Acrobat could not read the file. The message is
 probably a
bit misleading, as both Acrobat Pro and Acrobat Reader displayed all
pages of each file correctly on screen. Poking around with Pro's
preflight tool (which I think is more or less analogous to
 chklatex),
I got a message on the four recalcitrant files that the document
 structure was corrupt.

So I returned to LyX and generated those four presentations using the
straight PDF output option, rather than pdflatex. All four
 files passed
visual muster, and Acrobat Pro was perfectly happy to enable
 commenting
on all four. Other than considerable time wasted hunting the bug and
work-around, the only (minor) problem is that the
 non-pdflatex versions
are *much* bigger than their pdflatex cousins.

I can't find anything that differentiates the winners from the losers
here. It's not the presence of graphics (at least one of the
 four had
none), it's not the presence of math insets (several of the 14 that
 worked had math insets), ...

Does anyone have any idea what pdflatex might be doing to offend the
Gods of Document Structure (particularly in a way that does not stop
Acrobat or Acrobat Reader from displaying the document correctly)?

 TIA,
 Paul

That is true,

But we have 'organic' documentation so in time -thus after the document
is in use- the number of branches may grow. Then I still would like to
keep the available branches in sync over a range of documents.

Redefine chapter/section and subsection appearance

RE: Beamer/pdflatex mystery

2005-12-22 Thread Sanders, Maarten (M.J.L.)
Paul,

I have had a similar error on a mandrake 2005 system, though with
ps2pdf. It turned out to be a problem with graphics and the ghostscript
version. After I installed mandrake rpm ghostscript-8.15-16mdk.i586.rpm
instead of 8.15-22 the problem was gone.

Hope this gives you some pointers,

Maarten

RE: Branch definition in .layout file

2005-12-22 Thread Sanders, Maarten (M.J.L.)
That is true,

But we have 'organic' documentation so in time -thus after the document
is in use- the number of branches may grow. Then I still would like to
keep the available branches in sync over a range of documents.

Redefine chapter/section and subsection appearance

2005-12-22 Thread Sanders, Maarten (M.J.L.)
Hi,

This is more latex, but probably someone has an answer quickly. I want
chapter, section and subsections to appear like this (view with a
monospace font):

1.Chapter
  Her starts the text
  More text.
  .
  .
  .

1.1 Section
  Some section text

etc.

So I want the numbering to appear in the margin. Are there any packacges
that deal with this or do I need to redefine the section, subsection,
chapter etc. commands?

multiple arguments for Lyx Style

Is it possible to create a Lyx Style which accepts multiple arguments?

Nicolas,

My question earlier today is somewhat similar, so for the two arguments I have
no answer yet. You can find layout examples in /usr/share/lyx/layouts (or
somewhere close). Other examples are at:
www.troubleshooters.com/linux/lyx/index.htm
www.mail-archive.com/lyx-users@lists.lyx.org/msg12544.hmtl
If you want I can send you an example which I use for 1.4.0cvs but this can
only serve as an example, it will not work since it requires other files which
I can not distribute (I did post another example a while ago).

use lyxserver to set branch active

2005-11-09 Thread Sanders, Maarten (M.J.L.)
Hi,

I am trying to get an idea on how to work with lyxserver.

My idea is to have one master document with many child docs where the
master doc sets all branches. Ideally we would also have one master file
and a config utility that sets the branches in the state we want them.

I have a .lyxpipe.in and .lyxpipe.out but how can I now set a branch to
active from the unix command prompt? Are there any examples on how to do
this?

If not, is it possible to use an external file to use to set the
status of the branches in an opened lyxdocument.

RE: Where can I see what lyx is doing in the background whengenerating a preview?

2005-10-31 Thread Sanders, Maarten (M.J.L.)
I found a solution but it remains very strange.

DVI output was generated but DVI failed to convert to PS.

It seems dvips gest confused when in the master document preamble there
is something like:
\newcommand{\something}{something} and when a child document is using
the same preamble.

I really don't understand why this is happening but since I don't need
the newcommand any more for me the problem is solved.
I think it is more a dvips error because I can view the dvi.

Where can I see what lyx is doing in the background when generating a preview?

Hi,

I am struggling again with a possible bug.

I have a chapter (created from c-code with a custom perl script) which is
included in a master document.

When I open the chapter I can generate a ps2pdf preview without any trouble. I
edited the document and inserted an image and everything is still fine.

When I now open the master file I can still access the child document. But when
I try to generate a preview Lyx dies after it has taken several minutes of cpu
time. It does not show anything like waiting gor latex run ... In this case
also commandline exports last eternaly.

I already found out things work again when I remove the image from the child

RE: Lyx command line question: summarized

2005-10-19 Thread Sanders, Maarten (M.J.L.)
Thank you for all the contribution,

Summarized:

The latex export command line option works fine for regular latex, latex
myfile.tex generates a valid dvi file.

If you want to use pdflatex you should either:

1) edit the resulting .tex file and replace \usepackage{graphicx} with
\usepackage[dvips]{graphicx}

2) run, before you run pdflatex, something like
for FILE in `find . -name '*\.gif'`; do convert $FILE `echo $FILE | sed
's/\(.*\.\)gif/\1png/'`; done

3) Do not use gif's but png's instead

This will not convert any graphics file formats.

This is true for 1.3.x, but 1.4 converts included graphics
files if needed, and references the converted file in the
 .tex file. So the procedure

 lyx --export latex mylyxfile.lyx
 pdflatex mylyxfile.tex

 exception:
lyx --export latex can not know if the produced .tex file
will be run through pdflatex or latex. It assumes latex, and
this is the problem here: The gif file is converted to eps,
and the .tex file contains '\includegraphics{foo}'. latex
would find foo.eps (which was created), but pdflatex would
 find foo.pdf, foo.png or foo.jpg.

So I recommend you use png or jpg files in the original dicument.

This is indeed a workaround until we have a 'pdflatex' export format.

This will not convert any graphics file formats.

This is true for 1.3.x, but 1.4 converts included graphics
files if needed, and references the converted file in the
 .tex file. So the procedure

 lyx --export latex mylyxfile.lyx
 pdflatex mylyxfile.tex

should produce identical results to export-pdflatex from
 GUI, with one
 exception:
lyx --export latex can not know if the produced .tex file
will be run through pdflatex or latex.

RE: Lyx command line question: summarized

2005-10-19 Thread Sanders, Maarten (M.J.L.)
Thank you for all the contribution,

Summarized:

The latex export command line option works fine for regular latex, latex
myfile.tex generates a valid dvi file.

If you want to use pdflatex you should either:

1) edit the resulting .tex file and replace \usepackage{graphicx} with
\usepackage[dvips]{graphicx}

2) run, before you run pdflatex, something like
for FILE in `find . -name '*\.gif'`; do convert $FILE `echo $FILE | sed
's/\(.*\.\)gif/\1png/'`; done

3) Do not use gif's but png's instead

Lyx command line question

2005-10-18 Thread Sanders, Maarten (M.J.L.)
I try to use lyx from the command line.

In lyx 1.4pre2 preview pdflatex goes fine.

On the commandline I get:

$ lyx --export latex myfile.lyx
... lot of messages but OK
$ pdflatex myfile.tex
... goes fine except for an gif image. I can enter the latex question
about an image not being found and the image is not there in the
resulting pdf.
Anyone an idea on what to do to get the image?

Thanks,

some observations about lyx1.4pre2

2005-10-11 Thread Sanders, Maarten (M.J.L.)
Hi,

I am just playing a bit with lyx1.4pre2. some observations:

1) Compiling goes easy on Mandrake 2005

2) I did an open, modify and save from my previous docs, a master doc
with several input's (this converts to the new format?). Using lyx2lyx
warns:

warning: malformed lyx file: missing 'collapsed'
warning: malformed lyx file: missing 'wide'

3) I have segmentation faults whenever I touch the Navigate menu item
with my 'original' documents. New documents seem OK.

4) I have hyperref package included in my layout preamble, but no
bookmarks appear in the pdflatex'ed PDF. The latex log file however
speaks about my hyperref options (set in layout preamble). Also when I
create a new document the first time I invoke a pdf I see the bookmarks
but they all point to page '0'. The next time all bookmarks are gone.

5) Branches, extremly useful feature. Unfortunatly the settings of a
branch in a master document are not propagated to child documents having
branches with the same name. Also, it is not possible - I mean I did not
succeed - to put an item of a numbered list in a branch. e.g.

1. One
branch 2. two
3. Three (or two)

Hope this helps,

Maarten

\Mynewcommand{\myoption} in Layout Style

2005-10-04 Thread Sanders, Maarten (M.J.L.)
Hi,

Is it possible to catch this ERT:

\Mynewcommand{\myoption}

In a layout style so that in Lyx it displays as:

\myoption

in a normal text style (e.g. bold and slanted)? (or even better without
slash)

Thanks,
Maarten

RE: \Mynewcommand{\myoption} in Layout Style

2005-10-04 Thread Sanders, Maarten (M.J.L.)
Helge,

Basically I want to make an option for conditional text. I took Herbert
Voss suggestions
(www.mail-archive.com/lyx-users@lists.lyx.org/msg12544.html

In my layout Preamble I added:
\newcommand{\Option}[1]{\setboolean{myOption}{#1}}

In the document Preamble I have
\newcommand{\unitwithoptionA}{true}
this is to let the users specify which conditional text is to be
included.

So in the document I have:
ERT \Option{\unitwithoptionA}
And then the two environments with conditional text.

What I would like: users can click an environment and only have to type
the boolean's name. instead of ERT.

Thanks,

Maarten

PS An even better option for me would be to define a begin_true,
end_true, begin_false, end_false environment so that conditional text
would also work over itemized lists, sections etc.

Not entirely sure what you want, but you can achieve a lot by
 creating your own layout file.

A layout file lets you define your own paragraph styles, in
addition to existing ones such as itemize, description,
standard, subsection, . . . You can also redefine the
 existing ones, of course.

You can decide what latex code should be generated for your
paragraph style(s), so the final output will be right. You
can also define what your styles should look like on screen:
 * what font size to use here you get your bold slanted
 * Any label in front of it, so you can get the label myoption
if you want that.

Start by looking at the help menu, and select
Customization. This will help you with writing a new layout
file, it is assumed that you know whatever latex you might need.

Lyx, pdfLatex and pdf bookmarks. Character not right.

2005-09-30 Thread Sanders, Maarten (M.J.L.)
Hi,

I have following issue (I guess it is also (pdf)latex related, but give
it a try here anyway).

I have a document, language is selected as dutch. In the pdf I have a
correct Lijst van figuren , a List of figures. However, in the PDF
bookmarks it shows as y with double quotes on top which is correct but
never used in print (only hand written). Anyone a suggestion?

wrap: figure not working

2005-09-29 Thread Sanders, Maarten (M.J.L.)
Hi,

I have a multipart (input) document in which I try to use a wrap:
Figure. For some reason this does not show up in pdf files (pdflatex)
but it shows up in html via tex2html. If I put the figure in an ordinary
float it shows in both ways. The figure is a png.
The funny thing is if I compile extended.lyx (the extended features doc)
mobius.eps shows in the pdf file.
From the latex Log I do not get a clue though it seems the figure is
being processed. On the other hand, if I put a label in the caption and
a reference in the file there is a complaint it is undefined but in html
the ref is present and working.

in my layout preamble section I have the following packages (in this
order):

helvet, rcs, fancyhdr, chappg, tocbibind, cmap, hyperref

Anyone a suggestion on where/how to dig further?
