bug with space in dir name
Hi,
I do not know wheter this is a bug in LyX or LaTeX/TeX, but is seems
that documents whose full path contains spaces cannot be typeset.
For instance I see this in the temporary file in the /tmp/lyx_blabla
directory:
\def\input@path{{/home/ethology/common/Projects/Learning v Genetic//}}
Which produces a "missing \begin{docment} error". If I take away
spaces from the dir name, the error disappears.

Yes, I guess it would work. The problem is that the input@path is not
something I put in the document, but it's generated by LyX. That's why
I said it's a bug in Lyx.

SOLVED problems 1.1.6fix1 on slackware 7.1
Hi, thanks everyone for your suggestions! By manually #undefining HAVE_SSTREAM, HAVE_OSTREAM and HAVE_LOCALE in src/config.h I could compile and install happily. If #undefining HAVE_LOCALE does not impair locale awareness, I could make a lyx.tgz slackware package and upload it to www.linuxmafia.org. You can probably achieve the same without modifying these files by:
\renewcommand{\abstractname}{abstrak}
\renewcommand{\referencename}{rujukan}
In the preamble. It might be \bibliographyname or some other variation
instead of \referencename, I don't remember right now...

changing bibtex command
Hi, I am experimenting on a wrapper script around bibtex. I remember there is a way to change the name of the bibtex executable in ~/.lyx/lyxrc but I can't remember how... I have tried the following without success: \bibtex_command mybibtex \bibtex mybibtex \Command bibtex mybibtex \command bibtex mybibtex without success... In LaTeX you can provide an optional argument to caption, that is used
in the tof. In LyX you could try to put [your tof text] as the first
thing in the caption.

You can do that by putting \thispagestyle{empty} just before the
figure (or perhaps even better inside the caption?).
But you should be sure that figures fit properly! Use height=100% in
the figure box to do this.

Save it into a file and make that executable, then run the program as
in the `usage` line above. The IFS bit tells the program what to use
to separate fields (rows are assumed to be separated by newline).
It is a Perl regex. For instance:
IFS=' ' a space
IFS=',\s*' comma followed by 0 or more spaces
IFS='\t' a tab
and so on...
Then you need to make the file available from within LyX. The easiest
way is to use the include feature (Insert > Include File).
I only have tested the program on a simple file but it appears to
work. You can also have different numbers of entries on each line.

I have written a Perl class some time ago for this. Here is an example
of the usage:

$lyx->command("self-insert", "this should appear in LyX");

NOTE that I have currently no time to maintain it. It has worked for
me on a number of occasions but there is no guarantee that it will
work for you. I know for sure that it does not work on Solaris due to
file locking issues.
Also, I wrote LyX::Client as part of a much bigger project (still in
the design stage unfortunately). For this reason it tries to be as
robust as possible (e.g. error detection, supports multiple clients
reading and writing to the lyxpipes), which also mean that it might be
overkill for some purposes. For very simple operation something like
echo $COMMAND > ~/.lyxpipe.in
(or its equivalnet in your favourite language) might be enough.
This said, you are welcome to download LyX::Client and tell me if it
works for you. It's GPL, so you can modify it at your own will. There
is also a fairly complete manual page.
Now that I think of it, I know the lyxrc file format has changed since
when I wrote the client. This may or may not cause trouble, I haven't
tried. It should not be difficult to modify the lyxrc function in
LyX::Client to reflect these changes.

Ciao Paolo, the drawing program xfig comes, in latest versions (>=3.2), with libraries that contain pre-drawn objects, and one of these is for electrical circuits. If you are using Linux, chances are that you already have xfig, try "man xfig". Otherwise, you can check the contrib directory of your distribution. As a last resource: ftp://ftp.x.org/contrib/applications/drawing_tools/xfig The xfig figures can then be exported as ps or eps files for inclusion in Lyx/latex documents. You can use the caption2 letex package. For example, to achieve smaller
text in captions, put this in the latex preamble of your Lyx documents:
\usepackage[small]{caption2}
Of course, you must have the package... in this case you also have the
documentation, which will explain you other caption manipulations
possible.

ttf fonts
Hi, I am having some trouble with ttf fonts in lyx 1.0.0 (let me know if these problems are fixed in later versions). xfstt works, I think: I can use fonts in Netscape and they show up in xfontsel. One problem is that the font I would like to use is called times new roman, and lyx doesn't seem to like spaces in the font names (set in my lyxrc): stefano: stefano> lyx LyX: Unknown tag `new' [around line 190 of file ~/.lyx/lyxrc] LyX: Unknown tag `roman' [around line 191 of file ~/.lyx/lyxrc] If I quote the name, "-ttf-times new roman", I get: No font matches request. Using 'fixed'. Start LyX as 'lyx -dbg 515' to get more information. Using -dbg 515 doesn't prove illuminating in this case, I just get: Font 'Roman, Medium, Upright, Normal' matched by fixed I am using linux (redhat 5.2). text in math in FoilTeX
Hi,
I'm using the FoilTex class and I need to put some text in math
environments. I noticed two things when using ctrl-m (\textrm in latex) to
do this:
1) the text in the lyx window is not at the same font and size as text in
standard environment.
2) this persists in the ps document. The size is correct here but the font
looks as computer modern.
I guess that the second point is due to FoilTeX forgetting to redefine
\textrm or something similar. I am also not sure if this should be done,
in fact, since typing in latex one can ask for \textsf instead of \textrm.
Anyway, one can solve the problem in the ps output by using
\renewcommand{\textrm}{\textsf} in the preamble. I do not know how to
adjust the screen font, though.

Hi all, the simplest way I found to word-count documents is to export to ascii (to get read of latex non-words) and using then wc (standard unix utility). This is fairly quick, but I welcome better suggestion (although I think the minimal effort is one command within lyx + one outside lyx). Stefano

A slighlty faster way than what has been explained is to enter the
sub/superscript *only* in math mode. Like that you don't have to switch
back into text mode inside the math mode. For example, to type square
meters:
m Ctrl-m ^2 space space
("space space" is only to exit from math mode quickly)

lyxexport: exporting files from LyX
lyxexport is a program that contacts a running LyX, or starts one, to export files in various formats: > lyxexport --ps myfile.lyx Currently supported formats are: ps, dvi, latex, ascii, pdf. You can try the psfrag package, it should come with your latex
distribution. With it you can put normal text in the figs and then define
arbitrary latex constructs to replace it, e.g. "fx" -> $f(x)$ or "intfx"
-> $\int f(x)\,dx$ or whatever.

You have to explicitely insert \citet{} or \citep{} commands marked as red
text, the LyX builtin cite cooresponds only to plain \cite{}.

Hi, I'm trying to have a small piece of text an an exponent, but math-text mode seems insensitive to the "context" where it is invoked so that it always shows up in the same size... is this a known problem, latex limitation or can I achieve somehow small text in exponents?
