It uses our own version of the string C++ object, instead of the
standard one which is based on templates. If this is chinese to you, I
can just add that the template version create variable names in
debugging info which are veeer long, and not all
programming tools can handle that.

I am using gcc 2.8.1. I don't know what "--with-included-string" does,

What is your compiler ?
Try compiling again, after running 'configure --with-included-string'
