Yes, that's exactly what others do.
See, e. g. http://merl.ws - a nice weather dashboard widget.

We should place a note near the download link.

Regarding the Apple OS feature gatekeeper:
In general it's a good idea. See the explanation here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5290

The user has the control and the system helps to ensure the desired behavior.
And it's a good thing to be conservative with the default setting.

I rather think that an information during installation should be
displayed to inform the user how to proceed. Use right mouse button
click open once, and it works afterwards as expected. Not worth the 100$
per year, in my opinion.

You mean we should pay Apple in order to be graciously allowed to improve
it's software environment? Sounds like black humor to me.

Really? I hadn't heard that one. So you put down good money for a
computer, which then decides you can't run any software your want?
Even if the software developer doesn't want to be paid?

That can't be true, can it?

It's me :)
I didn't want to pay 100$ per year.
And I didn't want to sign a contract I don't understand 100%.

Shall LyX funds pay for that? If the contract part is not a problem, it
would be a good solution.

The only option when I do that is "Open with."

I'd suggest Googling "can't be opened because it's from an unidentified
developer."

LyX.app can't be opened

2013-06-26 Thread Eric Weir

New computer. Now on OS X Mountain Lion. When I started LyX after installing
it, I got a message saying, "LyX.app can't be opened because it's from an
unidentified developer."

What do I need to do?
