Re: Problems with LyX on Mac computers

2023-01-23 Thread mark salmon
PLease ignore my email below from last night regarding  my inablity to
copy and paste from a PDF file into Lyx with Mac Ventura and Lyx 2.3.7-
this was a tired error on my part after a long day struggling to get to
lectures written- I simply confused command V with Control V on the Mac.
It does work as it whould if I hit the correct keys. However the
graphics issue still remains. Could this be due the the version of
Python I have installed? Which Python version does Lyx require on the
Mac please? How can I check and re-install. I thought I had the Xcode
version but may  have Anaconda 3.7- but I am ignorant of these issues.
Any ideas please?

Many many thanks so far,
Mark

I have no idea what the cause of the Ventura file open dialog is. My plan is to

The two installers are not for older and newer versions of MacOS, they are for
older and newer Macs — older machines have Intel chips while newer machines
have Apple Silicon (M1 and M2 chips). The installer for the universal LyX
binary, which will run on either platform, includes the string “x86_64-arm64”;
the installer for the Intel-only binary only includes the substring “x86_64”.
In fact, both installers and both binaries will run on both older and newer
machines (although, of course, the Intel binary requires the mediation of
Rosetta on Apple Silicon machines). I suppose the Intel-only binary is a bit
smaller and perhaps runs a bit faster on an Intel Mac, but would think the
differences would be negligible (but I could be wrong).

No. The problem arises under Ventura no matter which LyX binary you use.

Re: Problems with LyX on Mac computers

Hi Ed,
 One academic to another- I have a problem in that I can  ( in Lyx
2.3.7) no longer browse for the graph in the dialog box when wanting to
insert graphics into a document- I am using Lyx 2.3.7 not 2.2.7. which
you are using. The assumption people have made is that it is a ventura
13.1 problem however if you can browse and insert graphics with the same
Ventura as myself but  using Lyx 2.2.7 it must be a Lyx problem. It
would be really helpful to know where the problem lies if you could give
it a try please. I can work around this by copying and pasting the
location of the graphics file into the location box but I lost 2 days of
my life over the last few days trying to solve this!

Cheers,
Mark

Re: Problems with LyX on Mac computers

2023-01-22 Thread Marcus Kriele via lyx-users
Ed, have you tried LyX 2.3.7, which came out very recently? I believe it is
universal, if you take the correct installer (there are two to choose from, one
for old versions of MacOS and one for the newer ones which support arm.

upper part (for the mathematical example) and a lower part (for its

making it pretty), choose a pretty thin boxrule and finally managed to
make the box breakable. I can even place the text for footnotes inside
the box outside the box. Unfortunately, two strange things happen in
this process:

 1. I put 2 footnotes in the box. Outside the box, however, both
footnote texts are quoted with the same No. 2. A footnote text
with No. 1 does not even exist.
 2. I made the entire text in the color box long enough, so there MUST
be arise a page break. This puts the first footnote on the first
page and the second on the second page of the box. Now the two
footnote texts should be shown on the corresponding pages. But
they won't, both are shown on the second page.

Greetings Andreas

Andreas,

I am copying this back to the user mailing list.

I do not know any way to force the footnotes onto a specific page, and a
bit of googling suggests that is somewhere between very difficult and
impossible. The numbering issue can be fixed (I think). I have attached
a modified version of your document, in which I added three footnotes
outside the color box both to confirm that numbering was sequential and
to demonstrate that footnote placement is not fully controllable.

Other than the added footnotes, the relevant changes are as follows.

1. I added a new counter ("myfootmark") in the preamble.
2. Inside the color box, before any footmarks, I added some LaTeX code
   that sets the "myfootmark" counter equal to the current value of the
   normal footnote counter and then increments it. This will be the
   number assigned to your first footnotemark.
3. In your code for placing the footnotetext, I give the value of the
   "myfootmark" counter as an optional argument (which causes that to
   be the number printed) and also step the counter after each
   footnotetext except the last.

Assuming the document compiles the same on your system as on mine, you
will see that the first footnote in the box still prints on the second
page, but the second footnote in the box now prints on the next page.
This is the result of my adding two footnotes before the box, which eat
up just enough space to cause the second portion of the box to consume
almost all of the second page. Remove one of the first two footnotes
that I added, and there is room for your second in-box footnote to join
the first one.

Cheers,

Paul

Dear Baris,
I send you a MWE called "Farbrahmen" (=color box): .lyx, .pdf, .log, .tex
After converting I get errors "undefined control sequence": .png

\ExplSyntaxOn

\ExplSyntaxOff

Greetings

Andreas

Like the others, I have no issues compiling Farbrahmen.lyx (using
pdflatex), other than harmless warnings that I do not have the mathpazo
font installed and that there is an unused global option ("usenames")
being specified. Both are probably left over from the original document.
There is also a warning against using the fancyhdr package in
conjunction with a KOMA-Script class.

Is the error message shown from an attempt to compile this document or
the original one? I ask because the error refers to an undefined LaTeX
command (\ExplSyntaxOn) that does not appear in the .tex file that you
attached (and that did not trigger problems when I compiled the document).

Dear community,
a few days ago I wrote you my problem in german. Sorry for that.
Instead of it I will try it with my (bad) english:

I have produced around 120 A4 pages with LyX, interspersed with much
mathematical formulas. I choose the KOMA-script for books for it. The
content is finished, now I'm fine-tuning the shape. In doing so, I
carefully consult the manuals enclosed with the software:

  * Introduction
  * Tutorial
  * User Guide
  * Extensions
  * Adjustments
  * Embedded Objects
  * Special manuals
  * Etc.

I have already been able to solve a number of problems this way.

But now I am facing a tricky problem. And I don't know if the problem
is with me, with LyX or with its documentation. In all honesty, I'm a
little confused. I try to tell you the cause of my confusion.

I want to include boxes for mathematical examples in my book. To do
this, I chose the so called 'colored boxes', divided them into an
upper part (for the mathematical example) and a lower part (for its
solution), was able to underlay both parts with different colors (for
making it pretty), choose a pretty thin boxrule and finally managed to
make the box breakable. I can even place the text for footnotes inside
the box outside the box. Unfortunately, two strange things happen in
this process:

 1. I put 2 footnotes in the box. Outside the box, however, both
footnote texts are quoted with the same No. 2. A footnote text
with No. 1 does not even exist.
 2. I made the entire text in the collor box long enough, so there
MUST be arise a page break. This puts the first footnote on the
first page and the second on the second page of the box. Now the
two footnote texts should be shown on the corresponding pages. But
they won't, both are shown on the second page.

So far so bad.

And now comes my real problem, which arises when I try to fix the
problem above:

In the various manuals

  * Tutorial 5.2.4.2;
  * UserGuide 6.7.1, 6.10.2, B.18,
  * Additional 2.4.1, 2.4.2, 2.4.3, 2.5, 3.4, 3.5.2, 5.6.2, 6.2.3,
6.2.4.2, 6.2.5.4, 6.7.3, 6.7.5.1, 6.7.5.2, 6.9 .3, 6.11.3, 6.12.3,
6.12.4, 6.13.2, 6.16, 6.16.2, 6.18.4.3, 8.1.3.1;
  * EmbeddeObjects 2.5, 2.6.3, 2.6.3.2, 2.7.1, 2.8.2.2, 2.8.3, 2.8.4,
2.9, 2.11.1, 2.11.2, 2.11.3, 2.13, 2.14.1, 2.14.3 , 2.14.4,
2.14.5, 3.2.1, 3.3, 3.4.1, 3.4.2, 3.4.3, 3.5, 3.9, 3.10, 4.1,
4.2.1, 4.2.2, 4.3, 6.3, 8;
  * Customization 5.3.5, 5.3.7, 6.2.2

it is always advised to add into the preamble in some situations.

However, in the manual, for example 'Additional 2.4.2 - Change the
preamble' is written:
/The commands LyX adds to the header of a LaTeX file are fixed; You
cannot change them without changing LyX yourself. But you can add your
own stuff to the preamble.
To do this, choose Document⇒Settings⇒LaTeX header. This opens an
editing window in which you can write your preferred commands.

The editing behavior in this window is specific, so don't expect the
LyX key combinations to work in it.
LyX adds everything in the LaTeX leader window to its built-in leader.
Before you add your own declarations to the header, check to see if
LyX doesn't already support this (remember what we said about
reinventing the wheel?). Also: make sure your headers are correct. LyX
doesn't check it. If the opening credits are incorrect, you will most
likely get the error message Missing \ begin {document}. If you ever
get them, check your opening credits!/
Nice. When I try to change the preamble, I regularly read the LaTeX
preamble shown in LyX in its first line:

/% Do not change the preamble !!!/
Even if I ignore that, I can't add anything to the preamble - that
seems to be technically impossible in LyX.

Now the manual UserGuide '3.1.2.4 - Local Format' says:
/Modules work with LyX like packages with LaTeX: They are meant to be
used in different documents. If you often need the same thing in
different documents, you should consider writing a module for it.
Sometimes, however, you need a format for a particular document, but
only in that one document. Something like a document-specific LaTeX
preamble: LyX ’ so-called 'local format'. See the Local Layout section
of the Customization Guide for information on how to use it./
When I try to find the various in the above Manuals to accommodate the
changes proposed there in the 'local format', I regularly receive the
message after validation:

/Format is invalid!/
Can you please help me?
Greetings
Andreas Plihal

Can you create (and post here) a minimal example showing the two
problems (the missing footnote number 1 and the box spanning pages with
both footnotes on the second page)? (The box contents do not matter, so
long as the document demonstrates the problems.)

Cheers,
Paul

  The tools are installed here: /Developer/Tools/Qt
  The Headers are here: /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.5.sdk/Library/Frameworks
  If you've grabbed another version you have to look for the correct values.

Hi Pedro,

LyX has been much harder to compile ever since they switched from
xforms to qt4.

Stephan Witt had a good idea -- if you can install LyX from a package,
and if it works, and if it's the right version for you, install from a
package. If not, here are some suggestions for taming the LyX vs qt4
beast:

* A lot of times you need to install a whole bunch of non-obvious
  components of qt4. Use your package manager to install anything
  remotely connected to qt4. Remember what you installed, so you can
  remove the unnecessary ones once you get LyX working.

* Be aware of some unexpected behavior: When you blow a compile, you
  need to delete your whole compile tree and restore it from the
  original tarball. Otherwise, sometimes, ghosts of failures past can
  sabotage what otherwise would be a successful compile.

Well, it seems that LaTeX can't find the bibliography file for some
reason. The best way to debug this kind of thing is to export your
LyX file to LaTeX and then process it from the command line.
Hopefully, you'll then get the error message from LaTeX. Another
option: While LyX is open, and after you've had a failed export, go
to LyX's temporary directory (it'd be /tmp/lyxdir.OTHERSTUFF on

exactly what LyX would.

MAC OS 10.5.6 and MacTex 2008.
I'm used to write papers to be submitted to IEEE journals. I use
both article class in lyx and IEEEtran class.
In both cases lyx cannot load the bibliography. I see only [?] in
the dvi and there are no references at the end of the document. I
use a bibtex file that works properly with any latex compiler.

Could you please help me? I was looking for a while on the web,
but I cold not fix the problem.

Well, it seems that LaTeX can't find the bibliography file for some
reason. The best way to debug this kind of thing is to export your
LyX file to LaTeX and then process it from the command line.
Hopefully, you'll then get the error message from LaTeX. Another
option: While LyX is open, and after you've had a failed export, go
to LyX's temporary directory (it'd be /tmp/lyxdir.OTHERSTUFF on
Linux) and process manually there. Then you're actually processing
exactly what LyX would.

I exported the lyx doc in tex and the only proble I see in the .log

file. In the tex file I call also other files that are in the same
place and latex has no problem to see these files.

I also reinstalled the latex distribution and lyx as well. But I
really don't know what else to do now?

When you add the bibtex file to your LyX document, make sure you give a
full path to it. That should take care of the problem.

Thanks for your answer and your patience.
Actually I did: I use the browse button to select the bib file. SO,
I'm sure that I give a full path to it.

Thanks.

Hi,

yeah I get the same problem as the other persons above. Gui stops loading
and looks the same as on the screenshot by Nicola Focci. I´ve also trief the
added version by Bennett. It does not work.
Lyx 1.5.4 is running fine, version 1.5.5 fails and also the 1.6 beta3 is not
working at all.

I doubt it is an error introduced by MacOS 10.5.3 as I´m still using 10.5.2.
Therefore I think it´s obviously something wrong with lyx and the error is
due to chances made in the step from 1.5.4 to 1.5.5.

Ubuntu). Since some people are having problems and some are not. Could
there be an underlying issue with someones TeX installation? Maybe
some missing/corrupted fonts needed by LyX? I know when I was using
OSX there seemed to be at least three different ways to install a TeX
distribution and unlike Linux the packages needed by LyX were not
automatically installed.

Just trying to help troubleshoot. Wish I had solutions instead.

Hi,

I gave it a try and finally updated to 10.5.3. The problem still exists and
1.5.5 as well as 1.6.0b3 crash during startup showing the known
grey-gui-less window.

Hi,

yeah I get the same problem as the other persons above.

 The new build you posted for version 1.5.5 worked on my machine with no

 The GUI is no longer blurred like in Nicola's case (see screenshot).

Maybe I have done somethning wrong... I simply copied Lyx.app in the
applications folder.
Should I also run the installer?

No, that's not necessary. I do wonder what the problem is. Does LyX crash on
you as it did for George?

Bennett, since the crash is reproducable, we should still try to figure
out what the reason is.

Based on his debug output, it seemed like an error occured as soon as Qt
tried to paint the first thing.

I wonder what could make the difference between my and your build (in
respect to Qt). Are we sure that we both compiled Qt against the SDK
(and not the system headers)?
Did you use the -sdk /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.4u.sdk flag (that you told
me) to Qt's configure?

You're confusing me: I don't see any clear pattern to the error yet. The new
build (with our current procedures) works for George. (And yes, I use the
10.4 SDK for Qt.) What I don't understand is why it doesn't work for Nicola,
and I'm trying to figure out what's going wrong there. There are potentially
two issues (the drawing problem and the crash), though they're probably
related; that's why I asked Nicola if he's getting the crash. Let's see
