Oh, sorry, I misunderstood you. To answer your original question,
LaTeX relies on external programs for sorting, as it doesn't care
about contents at all.

Sure is. Use to \bibitem command in ERT, and sort the entries
manually. The second Google hit on "latex bibliography",
, will show you what it
would may look like.

A I stated before I did not use BiBTeX for adding the Bib items. I just used
the LyX environment Bibliography. Idon't have any BibTex generated items
(unfortunately) and I can't find any configuration dialog to input the
style. Is it possible to write it explicitly in LaTeX?

Maybe the mla style is not installed on your system, you can get it
from CTAN mirrors. Just try a few other "Styles" from the drop-down
list (click on BibTeX Generated Bibliography to see it), most of them
create sorted output. You could try apalike.

Hi Andre,
Can you please explain how can I define the style "mla"? In the preamble?
Can you please give a code example?

Thanks a lot in advance

Do not use style "unsrt", try "mla" or the like. BTW, LyX just
triggers BibTeX that does all the bibliography work.

I suppose you are talking about BiBTeX? I have inserted my references (there
are a lots of them) just using the LyX Bibliography environment. I thought
LyX will sort them automatically. Unfortunately it was not the case. I can't
use insert-->List-->Bibliography since my references are already inserted.
Do you know any tricks in sorting them explicitly?

Thank you very much.

The way your bibliography is formatted and sorted is controlled by the
bibliographystyle. You can choose it from the Insert-->List-->Bibliography
dialog box.
The basic styles are plain, alpha and unsrt. The first two will sort
alphabetically your references. The last one will leave the references in
order of their appearance in your paper.

Beware that alphabetical sorting becomes a more complex task for a lot of
European languages for example the German ä or the French é, è or the
Spanish ll. Specialized bibliography styles may help.

For sorting a list or a glossary, I don't know of any tool.

Charles

Lyx sorts for printing (including screen dvi, ps or pdf). To print the raw
file, I sporatically ask emacs to "sort buffer." As I recall, other bibtex
tools also sort. But your question was aobut output. That is automatic.

The best solution is to use BibTeX to handle your bibliography. LyX
has good support for BibTex files and there exist some good bibtex
files editors, some of which are even LyX aware (gbib, barracuda).
