lyx.org domain fee

2001-04-20 Thread Lars Gullik Bjønnes

The lyx.org domain is up for renewal, and I am going to be so bold
that I ask is some faithful user will be willing to sponsor the LyX
project with this.

The fee covers two years and is 70$ US.

If someone steps forward, I will send the information needed to that
individual.

Tia,

Ok, Garst won this one.

I'll send the needed information privately.

May I also recommend that the project register a domain name with the
OpenNIC project. OpenNIC is an alternative DNS root server. They operate a
.oss TLD for open source software projects. Registration is free.
The webmaster (or someone) just needs to join OpenNIC (a simple matter of
filling out a form) and email the .oss maintainer.

Next thing we know, all OpenNIC users will be able to resolve lyx.oss!

More information on OpenNIC can be found at their web site.

Just a suggestion.

An alternative *root server*? Man... I learn something new every day --
never even knew there was such a thing!

BTW, some domain registration services are much less expensive -- for
instance, directnic.com (which I have used) offers .com, .net, and .org for
$15 per year, and I recently saw a banner ad talking about $9 per year...
don't remember what that was for, though. Typically these companies allow you
to transfer registration to them for little or no money -- directnic will do
it for free, if memory serves.

Sorry if this is unwanted, but I tend to be frugal with my money so I
thought the knowledge might be useful. :) Free software -- of which LyX is
a shining example, IMO -- has allowed me and many other low- to middle-class
persons to afford much better hardware than we otherwise could. (For the
price of PhotoShop alone, for instance, one can buy a very good motherboard &
CPU(s), or a whole mediocre system...) What the heck would I have to pay for
a commercial typesetting system with the capabilities of (La)TeX? More than a
month's rent, I bet...
