Re: [M100] TPDD2 Data cable pinout?

2016-01-12 Thread Geoffrey Oltmans
That's useful, and I must confess I was looking at the wrong part of the
schematic! ;)

I suspected that it must not be a straight through cable, because that
would be too easy. From his description it sounds like he ran across three
transistors, SOT-23 packages I'm guessing. According to a cross reference
most likely a PNP transistor with two built-in resistors, similar to what
is shown in the schematic on those same lines.

I'll have to try and construct a cable, but the next hurdle is that I have
no disks!

Re: [M100] TPDD2 Data cable pinout?

2016-01-12 Thread Geoffrey Oltmans
Yep, that makes sense. The inputs to the TPDD should already take care of
this on the input side... they are clamped to the Voutput low/high of the
buffer. On the flipside, the outputs on the TPDD have diode protection to
prevent damage if something is mis-wired, but no way to generate the normal
+/- 12V that RS-232 requires. IIRC, +5V is not much trouble since it would
be outside the dead zone of around +/-3V, but 0V is a problem... so that
level needs to be translated.

The seller is on Amazon called "MyVolts."

I imagine we could buy a box of them if there's interest. My contact said
they intend to make the product available on Amazon US but no indication of
when that's going to happen.

That said the cable is already easily available via Amazon UK for any UK
members. MyVolts sells several cables in the U.S. but on the U.S. site they
label them as being for specific devices and don't give the actual
specifications. So it might be available on the U.S. site, I just can't be
sure which cable is which!

Maybe if some other members ask in the comments on the Amazon UK site
they'll get on top of it and add the cable for U.S.

I might be wrong but I don't think anyone has successfully created a
TPDD cable other than one that used to be sold on EBay and that guy
didn't publish his design.

The theory is to sap power from flow control lines to convert from TTL
levels supported by the TPDD to the minimum RS232 levels necessary for
the Model T.

[M100] USB power for Model T

2016-01-12 Thread John R. Hogerhuis
I mentioned a little while back that I was looking into a USB to Model T
power (only... NO DATA) cable and had found one.

Well, I still don't know how to buy one but the vendor sent me a couple of
free cables. It works great!

they will make them available for purchase?

Sorry I looked the body of the email over and couldn't find it then after
sending I saw the info in the subject line. But I have not heard of any
one successfully reverse engineering one if these. It spears to have
"extras" in the cable.

Sorry.

Ah, the issue for me was that they have many cables that are offered which
are 6V but the problem was knowing the center negative vs. positive and
plug diameter parameters match.

But if you've confirmed the "Creative" compatible cable is the one, perfect.

Can you send a picture of the cable end so I can compare it to mine to
ensure it is exactly the same? Or just the part/model #'s off it.

Would the M100s run on 5 volts or do they require 6 volts? I'm
wondering if they could be connected directly to the USB 5 volt lines.

Re: [M100] USB power for Model T

2016-01-12 Thread wa7zyq
I bought one from Amazon for $9.99 with free (but not Prime) shipping. It
took about a week or so to arrive; not too long.

It comes with an 8" or so adapter cable. That cable reverses the
polarity. Nice to have, but not for the Model T's.

My usb volt/amp meter shows that there is 5.10 volts going in and my dmm
shows a no load voltage of 6.25 volts.

It operates my M200 just fine using my ipad wall wart. I have not tried
running it off of a usb port. I suspect that some will work, some may
not. It is enough for me that I now only have to carry an extra cable and
not an extra wall wart. I should mention that it also runs fine off my 2.1
amp car wart (so to speak).

Hope this helps. As always, YMMV.

Alternatively, unless you need 6V somewhere else (or are in Canada ;-), 5V is
quite sufficient for the M100 and straight-through cables are cheap; trivial to
reverse the polarity:
e.g:
eBay# 231419524659 $1.62

If you need 6V (or more) there are boost converters, although you'll have to
supply the cable and I haven't seen any nicely enclosed like the MyVolts unit:
e,g,:
eBay# 271306601322 $4.69

M100 running off a 5V USB battery pack:
