2022-12-25 Thread Doug Jackson
The M100 power supply requires parts of the M100 to be working before it
starts running correctly. From memory, it's the minus 5v rail.

I'd start by ensuring that the backup battery was charged, and double
checking all voltage rails.

I'd also try a cold reset.

In my reply I mentioned the card sound does come through on CloudT for
those that don't have their laptop handy. CloudT implements enough sound
support to work for BEEP and SOUND at least. You just need to click the

Thank you Brian! And you too Steve for the assist.

I'm not actually sure it is even hiting the highest notes. I didn't
actually code up all the numbers in the BASIC program and instead wrote
a C program that generated the BASIC. I entered the song from sheet
music into a text file and then fed it into my C program. The encoded
sheet music supports both Treble (T) and Bass (B) cleffs, and (w)hole,
(q)uarter and (e)igh'th notes, 'r'est, plus triplets ( 3[ ... ] ) played
at 2/3 time and dot '.' notation that extends the note by 1/2 of it's
period. Oh and 'G' counts as a quarter rest and allows me to GOSUB to a

All,

Attached is a Tokenized BASIC greeting card for your Model 100 or 102
(only! do not try on anything else as it uses machine language code and
calls ROM addresses which will undoubtedly crash it). Run it on a real
M100 to get sound (i.e. not VirtualT or CloudT).

I decided it was time to have some fun and this is what came to mind. I
hope you enjoy it!

I can make the code and a write-up of how I developed this available if

Re: [M100] I mortally wounded my Model T

2022-12-25 Thread Stephen Adolph
Well what's a little holiday without some hardware to fix!

I think how i would tackle this is to trace the positive voltage from
battery through to the transformer. See if there is a place where positive
voltage is missing.

If that looks good then the transformer circuit must not be oscillating.
One possible cause would be a shorted output capacitor.

Next I would visually inspect every cap you replaced. Make sure there are
no solder bridges that might cause issues.

It is also possible to create an open circuit by breaking a trace or a via
when you were desoldering.

Also were there areas of pcb damage at all?

Good luck
Steve

[M100] I mortally wounded my Model T

2022-12-25 Thread Hiraghm

So I decided to try recapping one of my two Model 100s.

The ones I replaced all looked okay, no sign of leakage; I replaced the
batter which did have some corrosion on it.

I used a Model 100 recap kit, but as the voltages didn't match on some
of the caps, I decided not to replace those.

Like a dummy, I forgot to fire it up and test it before recapping it; it
had been working when I put it in the closet... over  a year ago.

I made sure all the polar caps were oriented correctly.

I put it back together, turned it on... nothing.

I flipped the memory switch on the back to "on"... turned the machine on
and still nothing. Tried the contrast knob, no good. Tried reseating and
wiggling the batteries (I don't have a power adapter)... nothing. But
when I turned it off with the memory switch to on... the batt low light
flashes briefly.

So I killed my backup M100 :(

I'm not very experienced with a multimeter, but can anyone offer an
suggestions for troubleshooting how I killed it? What may be likely
causes for its current dead condition? Where to start looking?

[M100] Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, Happy New Year

2022-12-25 Thread John R. Hogerhuis
Looks like we made it another year. I highly recommend not letting the day
go by without checking out Ken's Christmas card.

I spent some of Christmas Eve dusting off CloudT as it needs a couple of
bugfixes at least. But also I am thinking about features to help with
hybrid BASIC and ML programming.

This last year has been one of expanded horizons for me. I took the
motorcycle training course and started on a woodworking certificate at a
local community college. The two things go well together because the
classes give me somewhere to ride my bike which has got me a couple
thousand miles of practice.

Also the classes are a great way to get out of my work from home rut and
connect with others.

I've also gotten back into my running activity, averaging about 17 miles a
week, when my knees and general health accommodate.

Best wishes to all the list members in your lives and projects! Although we
only really overlap in a single interest I think we form a community and a
bright but hidden treasure on the Internet. We should be proud of what we
encompass together. I think I joined the list about 2004. So closing on 20
years! And some have been here longer. Take a moment to remember the many
valued members who have passed. Ane those who simply gafiated... I wish
them well. Meanwhile we survive and hopefully thrive.

Enjoy the day and best wishes for the new year!
