Re: Independant AppleTV setup?

2011-09-21 Thread Geoff Waaler
Joe,

I believe this is the one I have. If so there are some button controls on the
side, but you can switch inputs with the touch of one button on the remote
(once you know which one, that is).

During my quick perusal of Amazon just now, they all appeared to be within
about $40 of each other.

  Best regards.
  Geoff

I have no light perception, yet can easily set up an Apple-TV without
sighted assistance after learning how to change inputs on my TV. The
first step is to set the tv's input to HDMI, and connect the ATV
accordingly. The last step is to plug in the ATV and wait about 20
seconds. Samantha will then speak through your tv admonishing you to
press the lower right hand button on the remote three times to enable
VoiceOver, and you will be guided through the menus hence forth. Once

Drop box won't work like that in Lion. You have to open the package and then
find the app under the contents/Mac OS folder and do it that way. If you've
already installed it you'll have to remove the log-in item.

That is assuming you aren't running a later version than I have here, which was
a beta released about 10 days ago.

Re: So sorry for confusion on drop box

2011-09-21 Thread Geoff Waaler
Greetings Michael,

The dropbox folder behaves like any other folder; you can move files around and
create subfolders as though you're dealing with your local drive. The only
difference (besides the obvious one that files will take longer to synchronize)
is that when you press vo-shift-m to bring up the shortcut menu on a folder or
file within your dropbox, you will notice a menu selection labeled "dropbox"
which has a submenu consisting of all applicable options.

HTH.

Re: Trouble setting up Dropbox

2011-09-21 Thread Geoff Waaler
Mike,

I've never needed to start the dropbox app, but have access to the folder in my
home directory. As I recall, my folder did not reflect the actual contents
until I rebooted for the first time.

HTH.

Hi, I have a different problem with drop box.

I installed it and it launches. However, when I try to get into the file I

It says drop box when I am on my desktop but it says drop box has no active

Anyone have any ideas of what I am doing wrong?

Hi James,

This makes no sense, but Annie recently mentioned that she successfully
installed by running the dropbox.app file from the disk image rather than
copying it to the applications folder. This made all the difference for me --
I never tried it from terminal, but was never presented with the prompts until
I launched it from the disk image.

Best regards.

 Hello Geoff
You don't need the UsB port. You plug the Apple TV into your network, or
configure its wifi network and the software is downloaded via the Internet.

can configure Apple TV using the supplied remote.

Re: Independant AppleTV setup?

2011-09-21 Thread Geoff Waaler
Hi Lynne,

Thanks much for the info. I understand that IOS5 will render it possible to
update without need to connect to iTunes, but until then, how is this done if
the USB port is unavailable?

If it is indeed possible to connect to iTunes I assume I could enable
voiceOver via the "configure universal access" dialog in iTunes? Are you
saying that its possible to turn VO on via the remote? Sorry if I totally
misinterpreted your post. I guess the bottom line question is how I can attach
to iTunes without the USB cable?

  Best regards.

  hello Geoff

Yes, this is correct; but you can do all of your iOS updates via iTunes. You
can configure Apple TV using the supplied remote.

We plan to do a podcast on this shortly, when Gordon is up to it.

Hello Sarah

This is a bit of a falsehood I think because you can get all of the statistical

statistics. I've seen this thing floating around on the internet for a few
weeks, and it really isn't anything spectacular.

Re: Microsoft word

2011-09-21 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
hello Mike

No, Microsoft products don't word with VoiceOver. I suggest Nisus Writer Pro
 for Word document best compatibility.

They also work with Pages, but it's slow and a it clunky in my experience.
Nisus is a far better bet for working with Word documents as you have far
better control over what's actually presented where.

As I have vision, this applies with and without VoiceOver. I try to use
VoiceOver as often as I can because I want to understand the way things work.
Anyway I suggest Nisus although I'm sure others will put forward other
solutions. That is the diversity of this group, you will always get a range of
options.

Remember that the configuration of Windows apps is off topic. But you're fine
with the VM configuration itself since that is Mac.

We have 8GB memory and we allocate 4GB to Windows 7 64-bit. That is about
right, since 64-bit requires more RAM than the standard 32-bit.

Any helpful tips and hints would be appreciated.

Anyone know anything about Samba?

2011-09-21 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
Evening folks,

I'm having a very strange problem under Lion. I'm trying to connect to a Linux
server over Samba. This is working, but the problem is that the volume
reports, or rather my Mac interprets, the permissions on the samba-share such
that I don't have permission to open it. It's authenticating fine. Anyone any
thoughts? This works fine under SL and various flavours of windows.

Thanks much,

Important Change To List Policy; Please Read!

2011-09-21 Thread Gordon & Lynne
Hello everybody

In the light of a likely aggressive spam address managing to subscribe to one
of our groups recently, Gordon has now modified the policy regarding new
subscribers joining the list. Rather than the usual simple confirmation, new
subscribers must now also be approved by either us or one of the assistant list
controllers before they are permitted to join the group.

Obviously as you're currently subscribed this won't affect you' but should you
ever leave and then wish to return, it's something you'll need to know about.

As a side issue, we have recently had several members leave the group when
they've gone on holiday, (vacation), and didn't want their mailboxes cluttered
upon their return.

Unsubscribing isn't necessary to prevent this; all you have to do is send an
email to the server with the appropriate commands to turn of delivery until
your return. if you'd like to know how to do this, either read the help
document at or contact us for
further information.

We regret the change, but as a result of us opting to use Google to provide a
second archive page for list traffic, we believe that it has compromised our
security somewhat and so we've had to take this decision now, before things got
out of control.

We are also looking at whether it's worth continuing to use Google as a second
archive provider; if anybody uses that archive or if anybody has any views on
that we'd love to hear them (off list).

We will shortly be compartmentalising the support addresses we use for each
network, so stand by for a message to that effect as well. But for now, please
use

Gordon is home now although still very delicate. We are taking the opportunity
while his activity is restricted to discuss this and other things which we are
planning. We hope to bring you more news shortly.

We will update the list policy document accordingly, to reflect this change in
policy which, we regret, we think will now have to remain permanent.

Independant AppleTV setup?

2011-09-21 Thread Geoff Waaler
Greetings all,

I'm expecting an Apple tv shortly, and recall reading that the mini USB port is
not intended for use by consumers. Is this correct?

If so, presumably it's not possible to update the IOS version and I will not be
able to use it out of the box without getting someone to go into settings ->
general -> accessibility?

TIA for any clarification and best regards.
Geoff

Re: VMWare Fusion 4.01

2011-09-21 Thread Sean Murphy
Hi All.

Firstly, if you have VMWare tools installed. Then you can copy files or text
from the host to Guess OS and visa versa. This is available in 3.xx. Just use
the copy paste commands keystrokes for the relevant OS. Note, the feature works
for any Guess OS that is running in VMWare as long as VMWare tools is installed.

In relation to best setup settings.

1. Do not configure your VMWare to take more then 50% of your RAM. In fact, the
VMWare site states you should have less then 50% of your memory allocated to
the VMWare guess OS.

2. VMWare also stated that if you have a multi-core processor. Then only use
one core for the Guess. Since the MAC OS has issues with syncing threads and
other functionality between multiple cores. I am not sure if this is valid for
Lion.

3. If you have only 4 gb of RAM. Buy more and upgrade to 8 mb at least. This
will make a major difference in performance.

5. The GUI interface is very accessible. So you should not have any issues with
changing parameters.

5. Store your data in a shared VMWare directory and sync the documents and
desktop. By having it on the MAc drive. Not in the VMWare environment. You will
maintain reliability.

6. Do not use 2 gb files setting. This can slow down the performance of the
VMWare. I do not know if this has been improved within 4.0. This came from our
internal I.T people at work.

Other then the above tips. I don't think there is anything else of major
concern.

RE: Microsoft word

2011-09-21 Thread Gail the U. S. Male
Mike, from what I understand, from other posts, the Microsoft office
products are not accessible. If you're using a Mac, Pages will handle word
documents. HTH

Hi list:

Please can someone tell me if Microsoft word or that Microsoft office suite
is accessible with voice over?

If not, what products can I use if I want to work with Microsoft word or
such?

Thanks in advance

I use pages and text edit all the time. I just command-tab between the two.

Re: Having two different programs run at the same time

2011-09-21 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hi Mike,
YOu can certainly have a textedit window and a pages window open at the same
time. YOu can use Command+Tab to switch between them. YOU can use cut and paste
to copy or move text from pages to textedit or vice versa. Or are you asking
for something more than this?

Re: Jail break iPhone - what does it mean?

2011-09-21 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hi Sarah,
thanks for that. One last question. If I jail break my iPhone can it still sync
with iTunes to update music and audio books on the Jail broke iPhone? Would
Jail break affect the iPhone apps already installed from the iTunes store?
Many thanks.
